DISABLED BABY TORTOISE GETS WHEELS!

- As a reptile rescue, we take in all walks of life. We’re used to receiving animals that have been subject to less than adequate care. Tortoises with bumpy shells, turtles with overgrown nails, and so much more. One thing we aren’t used to is hatching babies that have anomalies. Though it has happened before, it’s rare. Recently we came across a baby Hermann’s tortoise that hatched naturally in our outdoor enclosure where its parents live, year-round. Immediately we noticed something. Meet “Artemis”, an adorable baby tortoise with an interesting disability. Artemis’ back legs do not work properly, but our veterinarian gave a clean bill of health. So, what do you do for a baby tortoise that can’t walk but is otherwise healthy? Watch and find out.

Who is Garden State Tortoise?
However you made it here, thank you and welcome to Garden State Tortoise. Garden State Tortoise is home to hundreds of animals from all around the world. We are a family dedicated to adventure, conservation of wildlife, and all things nature. We are a reptile rescue and breeding facility for more than ten years, offering refuge to those who need it, and working everyday to protect the beautiful world of reptiles in any way we can. Here on our RUclips channel you will be able to join us on our animal adventures while learning how to care for, protect, properly identify, feed and even breed many species of turtle, tortoise, snake and lizard. We even work with frogs and salamanders! We hope you enjoy our videos and help us share them with the world so we can continue to educate people of all ages about herpetology.

What a strong character he's showing despite his condition. He definitely deserves a second chance at life. Hopefully he recovers them rear legs when he's bigger
Thank you!!
@@GardenStateTortoise Something that might work would be a "skid plate" for the bottom of the shell. You can get teflon sheets with adhesive on them, This would prevent friction on the area that contacts the ground and it would increase mobility by reducing friction =)
He’s a fighter
YES! Although a Cyborg Tortoise would be pretty cool.
@@GardenStateTortoise Hi, I wasn't sure how to reach you but I would very much like to write a children's book about your baby with wheels! Please let me know what you think. I wouldn't want to do this without your blessing. 😊
As a wheelchair user thank you for all you do & how you constantly show you don't see disabled Animals as all that "different" :). As every animal & person is different, his differences are just a bit more unique. They just need a bit extra to be themselves, like us disabled folks. Also thank you for calling it quality of life & for seeing he just need a bit extra to have that quality of life, along with your vet, who deserves massive props too for helping this guy & working with you guys to do that. He just needs some extra help for equity to be like other torteses. I love you not seeing it as he needs pity or he's an "inspiration". As Hey he knows no better for his life & he doesn't see he's different. But all the same thanks for taking all this extra care & work, that others wouldn't, & seeing it just as the way he is & what he needs, just like any other animal has needs too, his are just a bit different & unique & he just needs a bit more care ^°^. Really wishing him all the best and hoping he does get better with his legs, but even if he doesn't improve, I know he's with the best people for him, and thanks again for being those people ❤️.
Tho on side note, especially as someone with Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome (EDS), I'm curious after seeing the x-ray if there's something similar in tortoises? I know there is in dogs. I have nerve issues making me an ambulatory(can kinda walk rarely) wheelchair user... but also from the EDS (I'm on the severe end of the condition & have 0 ability to make collagen: impacting every part of my body including my nerves) but the biggest issue is our, skin, muscles, & hypermobility; especially of our joints & between them... But also especially when we're growing in the womb it creates a lot of issues, either lack of development or stuff like scoliosis but also later in life our bodies degenerate much easier(like my nerves). So is it possible the issue that's causing this might be similar? As maybe it could be collagen related, either affecting his nerves or maybe he has less of those collagen parts, meaning the legs didn't quite get enough to develop yet, or maybe did it create a kind of lack of development in them as well as maybe a dislocation or hypermobility of his back legs when growing, so much that they moved out of place? As I know their shell is keratin and our keratin is hugely impacted too, along with the rest of us. So if that were the case could you maybe test for it and maybe increase it with an injection to stimulate said hormone/cell maybe that could be creating a similar issue with his lack of development in the legs? But then again I could be way out there in my thinking and trying to see too much relatability in this guy's situation. But I'm so glad something so easy as the skateboard wheels could be used to create his lil wheelie wheelchair. So all the same he's able to act and move around & have quality of life ^°^. Please keep us updated as I really am hoping all the best for him and also can't wait to see how he grows 😊. Also really hope nothing goes wrong for him as he's at such a fragile stage & being monitored, but not like he hasn't been given steps in the right direction & getting the best care from you guys, even if it does.
Awwww I love him/her. Can't wait to see the progress 🐢🛹
Thanks Katie!
My old tortoise had his hips damaged after a dog attack and my old vet used one of those finger skateboards and then he tried the wheels from a Lego kit and he temporarily glued a Lego connector to help attach the wheels to the carapace. It really helped him get around and stay active, unfortunately he caught an infection and didn’t survive but we wanted to at least give him a chance. I really hope that Artemis’s hips start to grow and he will still thrive and hopefully learn to use his back legs at least for now this will really help him get around. What a cutie🤗🐢🤗
I'm sorry your tortoise didn't make it!
Go Artemis! This cutie is lucky to have such caring humans ❤❤
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 thank you!
Go Artemis!! How cute! I sure hope he will regain the use of his back legs, but if not how lucky he is to have been born there where he can be properly cared for! 😁💚🐢
Thanks Jeannine!
Love how much you and your family love these animals.
Thank you!
Ikr?
When I started producing Hingebacks, I wasn’t prepared for the inevitable hatchlings with physical disabilities like Artemis. It’s been quite rewarding to steward special animals like these. 👍🐢🐢👍
Totally agree Tom. 👍🏻
Aw! That's so freaking cute! He's doing a wheelie good job walking now!
Haha yep, thanks!
what a beautiful little tortoise!! how fortunate that even though his legs might not have developed correctly he still has so much energy and desire for life! it's obvious just from how he was able to get himself out of the ground (at least mostly lol). I can't wait to see how Artemis grows and I'm crossing my fingers and sending lots of love
Thank you Mars!
Way to help Artemis. Love the new wheels.
Thanks Pamela!
I’m thinking he may have more traction with the rubber lego wheels, they also spin much easier with less force needed. What a cutie pie.
What a sweet little guy, I love that you named him for Artemis, and I’m sure she will watch over him. I really appreciate the lengths you go to so these animals can have a solid chance at life. He is definitely trucking along with his new wheels.🖤🇨🇦

Great idea but a little high for the little lad. Very kind of you to take time to care for this special needs baby tortoise 🐢💕🐢
He is zooming right along! Will be fun to follow his progress (love the hat btw! "that's just Reggie")
So caring of you. Wonderful!
What a wonderful idea, giving this special tortoise wheels to get around! 😀
Artemis is going to be a great mascot and advocate for kids with physical differences. What a cutie patootie! 🥰
Simply Adorable !!
You take such thoughtful and kind care of your beasties…it’s a big part of why I watch your videos. Thank you!
I love tortoises I actually got a horsefield called Rio, from a not so great owner sadly. She's quiet deform and struggles with human contact and sometimes eating. She has quiet a flat shell for an adult and a over bite but she's loving life from what I can tell. We have cuddles and I had feed her, but she definitely trys to do it herself.
She has a great personality and never lets her deformities get the best of her.
this is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
Thanks!
Omg I have NEVER seen anything so cute in my life! I didn’t know that I needed to see this little guy today, but I did that’s for sure!
I loved following Helix's story and was so sad when he passed, he was an amazing little tortoise. Glad he inspired you to give this little guy a chance and a way of getting around, can't wait to see more of him/her!
Same here and thank you!

Ohhh Artemis is really gonna zoom around fast when he gets a little bigger and can put some weight on his wheels. Can’t wait to see his progress!!
Helix's legacy lives on!
Good luck with your rehabilitation cute little guy
Quite an ingenious way to give this little guy a chance to enoy life. He is such a cutie. We found a turtle in our backyard that we believe was dropped by a Hawk or local Spotted Eagle. We named her Squirttle and she lived in a clothes basket, with full run of the house during the day. She got access to water which she loved, and we took her outside 3-4 times a day, to get fresh air and crawl around. Our Pitbull puppy got very attached to her and protected her when she wandered the yard. My son did some scouting of local ponds but couldn't find any other turtles. We have a Nature Preserve here in Tulsa, and they had several tutles the same type as our girl, so we took her to the pond there and check on her often.
I can’t wait to see what happens with this brave, courageous little guy. I’m hoping his legs get better as he grows up. Go Artemis! Let’s not forget how cute your little girl is. She’s beautiful. 🥰
Him just staring down Artemis after "careful supervision" took me out lol
Adorable!
He’s so cute❤🐢
I swear you have a FRONT ROW SEAT IN HEAVEN...THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE YOU ARE IN IT...😁😄😄😀😇😊😉
I have a Russian tort Herman that lost the use of his back legs and I used legos! I happy to watch this video and seeing we are doing what you are doing as well. Makes me feel like I am on the right track! If you ever need a home, I would totally apply since I know how to take care of a special needs tort
I love this video I love everything that you your wife and the sanctuary is about God bless you all keep up the good work. And Artemis you're a character LOL
Thanks for sharing some of the medical details of Artemis' story. It's super interesting from a veterinary perspective. I hope he does well!
Love that shirt ❤ also comparing the X-rays was such a good idea
It is so awesome that it will at least have a chance at life there.

🐢👑 wow!🥰
I love how your videos are educational as well as entertaining. I'm learning so much about turtles and tortoises ever since I started watching your channel. Go go go little Artemis!
I love testudo family 😍😍😍😍
Same here!
Artemis ❤
Such an amazing story for this little one. Thank you so much for sharing everything you are absolutely so helpful. I found that I was feeding our tortoise improperly because the reptile store we got her from gave us absolutely wrong information. I feel that maybe we don't have a Greek, but another subspecies of Eastern tortoise. I've recently found a vet nearby that I can bring her to for a check up. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Very cool!!!
Sweet pumpkin will need those wheels cleaned from poop, too, from time to time so definitely good that they can be taken off. It's so cool how enthusiastic it looks about it's elevated speed.
I will never say it enough, men who loves cats and all our wild friends are freaking adorable.
Such a cutie, I love his little wheels.
