Every time I watch one of your videos, I get to the end of it and have to send more thankyou's your way. I've applied this, and once again, it just works and has fixed more issues with my singing. I relax, I breath, and I talk in a higher voice and then I just sing in that voice with a lean and I'm free in my range. I'm hitting higher notes than ever before, but there is no throat action, no pushing, it's just such a lovely feeling, so thankyou once again.

Thank you so much for this. For years the tip of my range was D4, with a lot of work I managed to get it up to a dodgy f4, and could get to G4 with an unusable level of strain. Every instruction I had received seemed to be about strengthening the breath, and though they talked about control it really wasn't clear how to do it. This video made it all so much clearer and using the reverse abdominal breathing really does give that control. I just hit A4#, and sang the top note in Bridge Iver Troubled Water without much effort or strain. It has completely changed my ideas about my voice and I can now see that even a usable C5 is probably achievable in time, instead of straining up to anything above D4 in unlistenable tension. It has also improved my general pitch, tone and passage over the break. Much appreciated.

I'm more an enthusiastic singer. Very low pitched voice for a woman. I'm not a bad singer, but I make it worse by having an addiction for difficult, technical songs (Hindustani classical music) so what little I know is usually inadequate for what I am attempting. The songs I really enjoy singing are always the ones I haven't managed to sing well yet. It is like a puzzle - how to make this happen. I would sound much better if I sang easier songs.
I may not have the reach or skill/speed and sometimes my voice renders more an approximate "vocal scribble" than clear notes in difficult parts. Your videos made me realize that I do some of the things you suggest - resonance around the eyes/forehead, paper doesn't move when I sing, etc - I think this makes me sound like a much better singer than I am. Makes my singing sound authoritative when it is often inaccurate.

I have one question that irks me. I always hear about filling up part of the lung.
I’m a scientist and one of the defining gas properties, is that when a gas enters a container, it spreads equally throughout the space. So it always raises a question when I hear about breathing into a certain part of the lung. Thoughts?

I watched a video the other day from a "professional opera singer and vocal coach," not Michael, and he said that an opera tenor should have a "bite" to his notes, so he recommended that the tenor needs to sing partially nasally to get that extra "ping" to the voice. After watching and learning from Michael, that other guy is just plain wrong. Michael's "Divine Puzzle in 4 Parts" speaks completely contrary to this, and this video focuses on the 4th part of his Divine Puzzle, Resonance. Following Michael's instructions, I rarely have trouble with resonance. My fellow singers ask me how I can create such overtones (for those who know what to listen for) in my voice - and it's all due to Michael's instructions. BTW, I have never heard my overtones; I just know when I sing properly that it will be resonant.

Here's a new spin on old ideas: I read your book but I do believe I CAN let air seep out of my chords without breath coming out. I just let the air seep out like smoke under a door. The tissue exercise only proves there was no fire or explosion. Just because a doctor couldnt see breath moving thru the vocal chords only proves the breath wasn't in motion. As someone who does the candle exercise correctly, it feels like the doors are hanging open and the air is clearly dispersing as i eventually run out of breath, but the breeze isn't blowing: because there's zero pressure. No air movement does not mean no air escape.

Thank you so much again! There's a moment that's got me wondering, you said for every action there's a reaction, so breath deep to sign high, does that mean it can help a little to breath "higher" (if that makes sense) to sing lower. I find it very challenging to sing some low notes, not that they are way too low, it's just that it's harder to control the amount of air going out on some low notes, I try to breath just like you teach all the time, so do you have any tips? Much gratitude from the gang! I love you and hope you are safe

Your demonstration of the covered, thick, fat sound on high notes at the 5 minute mark basically represents 100% of Sherrill Milnes technique. He had the biggest career of any baritone of the last generation. It's a shame that good singing does not always equal a good career, and especially vice versa. Companies seem to prefer to hire bad singers lately.

Michael is an expert, and I have no room to speak with any authority on the subject; these techniques may very well be superior to how rock singing is taught by many modern teachers. However, I have to say that Michael is an expert at singing opera where amplification is not usually involved. Because of this, certain techniques have been developed to help carry the voice over the orchestra without a microphone. But rock music has amplification built into the DNA of the music and as such doesn't have the same concerns. Because of this, some of the focus of Michael's technique, while potentially useful to rock singers, may not help develop your voice in the same way that the rock singers you like developed theirs.
Opera has the benefit of hundreds of years of refinement and formal education built around it to refine the technique over time. Rock is newer and more "DIY" in a lot of ways, so there is a lot of bad information out there. *However*, that doesn't mean that classical techniques are inherently better, at least in my opinion. It just means that rock vocals are different and might take more experimentation and sorting through bad technique and bad teachers.
I would say find a teacher who's vocal style you really like and learn from them rather than focusing on a certain style just because you think you should or because people say it's inherently "better."
I am working towards rock singing as well and love Michael's videos, though. It's always interesting to hear different approaches to see if there are things I can take away and apply to a different
      style.

I also red your book (and the books of Caruso and Tetrazini). Do we have to engage any of the low abdominal muscles (oblics, transverse, pelvis ...) or should they spontaneously participate to some extent in appogio technique just with correct posture ?

Even a tiny bit of air is hurtful if it comes out if we sing?

a small amount of breath leaking through the sound will eventually create nodules on the vocal cords. a large about can cause nerve damage or cause big nodes that must be treated extensively or removed surgically which can ruin the voice like Lyonel Richie or Adele. so, don't leak air, ever, and thet goes for speaking, too.

Maestro, what is your opinion on the technique of Rockwell Blake? He sounds very good in his light Mozart and Rossini roles, however he shows teeth for his high notes, and has all kinds of action with his tongue.

I can't figure out how to breath into my lower back. When I try my chest area only expands.

Could you answer this? What about falsetto? Female singers really need falsetto to get that fullness of sound we all desire. I have what you're demonstrating pretty much down, and it's really easy to do. But it's impossible to drag chest that high, and that also isn't the right sound. How do I practice falsetto?

Don't give up if singing makes you happy. Do it for yourself. Live today, tomorrow does not belong to you 😉
