If you don't practice, you're planning to fail. linktr.ee/GregWidmar
If you're failing to practice, you're practicing to fail :)
But I been riding for 20 years I dont need to practice. As an MSF Coach I hear that all the time. I tend to shy away from riding with them.
I practised a lot, swerving and emergency braking. Last night passing a line of traffic a car decided to suddenly pull out. ... I swerved instantly ... I dont even remember thinking about it but it was fast... the driver also tried correcting back at the last second... I even had time to give nim a nod of my helmet in acknowledgment... So really practise makes things automatic ;)) thanx Greg
In Denmark this is a mandatory thing that you MUST master or you will not pass and can not get a driver license .. you have to do it with a minimum of 50 km/h
I wish my country had laws like that and harder license exams, thats awesome ngl that yall get to learn those stuff and have more experienced riders
Same in the UK
Same thing in France
Same in Austria
Same in Sweden.
Person of the Year award material right here. You are saving lives mate. Best riding tips channel in YT. Have a great 2023.
best beginner youtube channel. period.
gives you the basics so you have the confidence to pass the road test and ride comfortably and intelligently. awesome stuff.
The recent head-on between the truck on the wrong side of the road and the two bikes made me think of this video, the first chap in the group had awesome reflexes and skills to avoid the truck.
Thanks. The more you teach about counter steering the more I have come to appreciate it, it and why I can't do it consciously ( for now ). Now I see that in order to counter steer effectively you have to be comfortable with the bike leaning but then again you said most of us are counter steering sub- consciously ( LORD have mercy ) . But hey, good staff here and like you said, practice.👍👍👍👍
Great video, I was taught the smith system of driving at my job. It comes in very handy combined with your videos
Great advice MotoJitsu - delivered with precision and skill we can all learn from if we just shut up and practice - stay safe in 23
thanks for the tips. it looks like i've counter steered that hard in practice before but not for very long. will add this to the list to practice.
Brother you are like Mr Motorcycle, You are a great teacher! Thanks for continuing to make these videos. Whether you realize it or not there are a few who are actually practicing and you are indeed saving lives 🙏 Glad you turned the comments back on and much love Brother 💯
You have to do something similar on your mod1 for your U K motorbike licence.
Important technique to master, thoughtfully described in about 3 minutes, skillfully divided and crammed into a 17 minute video. Glad I know about the parking lot owner...
EXcellent, excellent instruction!! Thanks,
Thanks for all of your great videos! Been following for years. Do you have a shut up and practice patch? I would buy one immediately if you did haha
A VERY worthwhile video. Much appreciated.
As a new rider this channel has been the best for me learning I appreciate your time bro 😎 one these days I would like to meet you bro you have made me such a safe rider
Only the OG’s know its a repost from years ago
Thanks for share practice by action. We love this way to use in parking area.
Really well explained. 👌🏻Another great video. Thank you from “Down Under” 🇦🇺
Good training…..👍
That`s a quick swerve, excellent 😎
Please consider wearing a mic so your voice doesn't fade when you're away from the camera.
The profile of the tire is genius, and it's just a semicircle. It reminds me of a funnel or a glass rolling on the ground. The radius of the rear tire remains larger (the rim of the glass or funnel) and the front tire is the base or outlet. The cup makes a larger radius turn than the funnel because the difference in radius is larger than with the funnel. It's like 》 vs >
Really important to practice getting back on line after missing the obstacle, or your off the road in seconds!
I think the thing with countersteering that people struggle with is that yes the front wheel goes the “wrong way”, but it is VERY BRIEF and because motorcycles don’t generally have a lot of steering lock available, it doesn’t go very far. Countersteering in a car though, which many people have probably seen a lot more of, is generally more pronounced and noticeable. You do a great job of showing and explaining it because it isn’t easy to demonstrate.
yup, just gets it to lean :)
@@MotoJitsuhow do you feel about the suggestion that rather than focusing on their arms, some riders might just imagine loosening their grip on the bike with their legs, keeping their body straight and letting THE BIKE swerve around the object and back again? Some argue it achieves the same result and doesn’t have people focus too much on what their arms are doing (which due to lack of steering lock is never much).
to swerve you have to counter steer...that's all anyone needs to practice...everything else is secondary and doesn't really matter. Push hard and fast in the direction you want to go and keep pushing until you clean the obstacle, then counter steer again to bring it back up. Anything else doesn't matter.
@@MotoJitsu interesting and thank you for taking the time to respond. Have a great day!
no problem..more than anything, actually go and practice...everything else is for the birds.
Nice video and thanks.
Maybe you should add what happens to the body during this rapid positions change. In my opinion this is the scary part of the process 'cause it's like the bike "wants" to push you away of it.
Merry xmas my brother! Be safe
Thank you.
This guy is real good.
meanwhile in the uk we learn to do this for our Mod 1 test!
I was just thinking the same, although the swerve on the Mod 1 does look like a bit of a token gesture compared to this? I'm not sure, I haven't done it yet so I'm just going by videos of the Mod 1. I just got a smaller GS to learn on and it's early days!
That last little bit is everything for me tho. Like the maneuver, I get. Its fun, actually to just do wiggle waggles on the right road. But I'm never sure I'll be able to do something *in time* when the five-piece bedroom set fall out of the truck. Its so infrequent, and so risky, I dunno how I'd practice it. I have good reaction times in things. I play in a band, so I do have some sense of time and coordination. I need some kind of randomizer to do nothing, and then once every fifteen or twenty, or two passes, THEN there's a truck or a mattress. Like, with much love, there's no surprise in this. That's what would build skill for me, I reckon: the surprise factor.
I love practicing swerves!
Merry Christmas !
I can watch this video over and over again...
Just failed my mod 1 - I’m terrified of swerving as I think I’m going to fall - so I hit the bollards- after a faultless test till that point - gutted!
The reflectors you use make you a Polish patriot. That makes two of us.
the slow mo really show how counter steering works
So if you don't counter steer you would have a low side crash? would the front tire just go too far and you lose control?
Mandatory on all European motorcycle tests for the off-road section
it was mandatory in texas as well! Swerving, obstacle avoidance, figure 8s , running over large objects. Was all required to get your license.
I've always watch the content on your channel, but I swear, the only one thing I never get is the counter-steering part, where you're talking about pushing left and then going left. That stuff always gets me confused!!
I'm still learning to ride ( Just got my license ), so as someone who barely ridden anything, I couldn't imagine how it went in my mind, UNTIL NOW. Thanks for actually showing it on the video!! Much appreciated 🙏
When countersteering the point of it is to get the bike to want to fall before correcting it,
if you ride a bicycle then you already do that unconsciously
Find a wide-open parking lot. Go forward slowly. Push the right handlebar forward. Watch which direction your bike goes. Push harder the next time. Repeat.
Doing it once to pass your license isn't enough to keep this skill in muscle memory. When a car pulls in front from a cross road you want the habit to help overcome the tendency to freeze up. If I ever get back to riding on the street, I hope I can make a habit to practice this and emergency braking 15 mins at least once every 5 or so rides.
Can you address swerving after braking? If during the act of progressive emergency braking you realize that you aren't going to stop in time you release the brake and swerve is there any difference versus swerving with a steady throttle? eg. front forks compressed ect.
Just don’t do both at same time
When counter steering, Are you locking out your wheel the opposite way or barely turning the steering wheel? I have a time counter steering, any advice as well?
From what I know you only need to turn the handle bars very little in the opposite direction to counter steer. Even smaller adjustments need to be made at higher speeds, and is called "push steering". It means you push ( very little ) the left side of the handle bars and the bike goes left, likewise you push the right side of the handle bars, you go right.
I'm not very experienced but I hope I helped you with my explanation. Have a great day!
I have to say this looks daunting. Is it possible to overcook it? Can you push too much?
Question: can you push too hard when practicing? That would be my luck. Great video and practicing is key.
Technically possible, but in reality you would need to pull the handlebars using your body weight.
Of course it all depends how much traction there is. On ice it will be very easy.
Yesterday I could avoid being charged by a car driven by a moron circulating in the left lane who suddenly, without using indicators, decided to turn right crossing his Audi in front of me. Fortunately I could swerve it leaning the bike hard to the right passing in front of him, (my only way of escape) and leaning again, this time to the left, to return to my center lane. My reaction was totally intuitive: I didn’t think in pushing/pulling, right or left. I don’t know if that means I had muscle memory or not. I only know that my reflexes are still working but my pulse and anger took a long time to return to normal. Was also luck on my side? I think it helped me, because there was nobody on my right, so I could swerve with no additional interference.
Two years ago I was leaving a gas station...buddy backed out in front of me and had to swerve hard to avoid them....practice pays.
recently attended to an advanced riding.course where i was told i am to clutch in while swerving..it felt weird and kind of stealing my miliseconds..it had it reasons though however not convinced..how about your opinion? can you be little more specific on controls i.e throttle, clutch brakes etc during swerve thank you
Don’t do that…just keep a steady throttle
well i would appreciate why? cause this advice came.from those rospa guys who follows ipsga method..forgot the main reason but they argue when u instantaneously cut power by clutching in the bike leans faster with the same countersteering input..it was mainly high speed swerve advice above 80kmph though..
who cares? one, if you actually have to swerve, you don't have time to do much of anything besides swerve...which means counter steer hard and fast...but if you want to add pulling in the clutch and then releasing it perfectly smooth after the swerve, oh and if you slow down too much, now you may have to downshift too, do you do that after you swerve or while you're swerving? Go practice and figure this out for yourself..too many people just blindly follow what someone says without any practice.
well evem during the course i figuted i was more acccurate and comfortable without the clutch..as matter of fact been doing it like.this untill the course .i was suprised to hear that this is why asked why would you not recommend it...thanks for the comments!!
take more courses from higher level people MotoJitsu.com/courses and more important, go practice and see for yourself what works and what doesn't.
So an instinct reaction has to happen; Emergency braking or Emergency Swerving. If Swerving, no front braking at all, should be applied. Quick Swerving and front braking will drop the bike. Yes?
No front or rear brake. Assume you use 100% of available traction for swerving, you will have 0% for braking in a swerve.
Happy boxing day
How big is the risk of a highside with emergency swerving?
the bike falls so you can only low side .....at first.....
@@dougholtby3035 when doing abrupt swerves you are pretty tall on the bike so highside probability increases if your body position isnt right
because practice makes perfect :)
can you SWERVE at a higher speed like 60mph?
Yes, everything happens quicker
Jesse Pinkman knows how to ride.
Counterstearing is upsetting the gyroscopic of the front wheel. Very good topic!!
@@seniorrider9337 It leans bc you're offsetting the gyroscope. I understand the concept. I use counter steering on a daily basis.
Great video for EVERYONE to watch & perfect.....although every avoidance situation is different, fundamentals stay the same!!! TY
Ps....I did not see your "S U & P" tee on your merch? Would like to purchase......
I am always out practicing something that you have taught, it's invaluable & life saving.....
Thanks again& ride safe!
Yorba Linda
I'm kinda' jealous on how people in your place or country take these teachings seriously. In our Country, #Philippines, it's like a freebie. Everyone can have their license without even testing them if they really know the traffic rules. It's like business here. Money talks. It sucks here.
This is all good until you come across a chicken, dog, buffalo,, its all good though.
Watching your channel is like going to bjj class and they always show the scissor sweep 😂. Give us some new stuff bro. We’re not all white belts watching
5000 words, 16 minutes of blah, blah, blah, and only 30 seconds of anything meaningful to see you avoid "hitting" something.... It's useless unless you want to fill your head through your ears with chatter. .. I want you to show me how with 120 km/h you will do such a push on the handle of the steering wheel and not fall?....
