- In today’s video we’ll talk about how the motorcycle steering works, and specifically we’ll focus on the concept of countersteering. If you haven’t heard about countersteering yet - this is your lucky day, because today you’ll learn how you can lean your bike really fast and really far, like you never did before. And if you already heard of countersteering, but still have some doubts about it and can’t wrap your head around it - don’t worry, I promise it’ll become super clear by the end of this video. All you have to do - is to listen and watch closely. I divided the whole explanation into small and very easy steps, followed one by one. Again, all you have to do is to watch, listen, and not skip anything, because each step will be very important.

On Moto Control channel you will find videos about motorcycles, motorcycle riding techniques, tips & tricks and online motorcycle training for beginner and advanced riders!
A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back in Moscow I was a motorcycle instructor and creator of Moto Control Beginner & Advanced motorcycle rider courses, which quickly became the most popular courses in Moscow (well, at least the advanced one😁). My advanced training course makes emphasis on slow speed riding techniques at first (such as good clutch and throttle control, proper riding posture, proper use of vision, etc.), then proceeds to more advanced techniques (such as aggressive braking, trail braking, maximal lean angle). The course incorporates a lot of exercises from DOSAF slow speed riding (similar to police rodeo like motorcycle training in USA), braking and cornering exercises and motogymkhana style riding. And now, since I actively learn English - I decided to post some useful videos for both your and mine practice!😉

Since everyone writes this, it's necessary, I suppose 🤷, so here we go. Disclaimer: Ride at your own risk, you are responsible for your own safety. Me, Andrey Bodrov and my channel, Moto Control disclaim any liability incurred in connection with the use of riding techniques from this channel. Use common sense, wear full protective gear and ride in a safe and predictable manner!

if you are new, dont let any of this intimidate you. Take your bike to an empty lot and practice whatever you are comfortable with, at your level, and pace. It will click when its suppose to.
And if one is really "squimish", just ride a bicycle, two wheeled vehicles ( with rounded patched tires to be exact) can only be steered by leaning, you just feel its direct steering but direct steering does not work at all, try as you may on a two wheeled vehicle :D , it leans for gosh darn reason, something to do with its tires and the fact it only has two wheel :D Physics is magic
@@mannyechaluce3814 i learnt how to counter steer while riding a bicycle before i got a moto licence lol its just the same thing but require mote strength
I just start my story with Motorbikes, decide to buy Vulcan S. As You said, I train everyday 2-3 hour, I feel that's was a great idea, to listen people like You, its help a lot.
Invaluable✌️ Not ridden 100 miles yet and riding like a manikin on a unicycle, but this make so much sense. Hopefully I will survive a little longer now. Thanks👍
Thanks. I’m starting to understand more the more I watch this video.
the conquer driving of Motorcycling
I've been riding 42 years, all year round. This guy is by far the best I've seen on YT in terms of teaching riding technique.
You are saving lives with this video
- bravo
I believe at this point this should be a mandatory video lesson for beginner drivers and I truly hope that everyone who watches this video has some patience and pays careful attention for better understanding.
I've ridden motorcycles for 20 years & bicycles for 40, never have i seen such a great explanation & brakedown of this topic. Absolutely correct when you say "you're probably already doing it but just didn't know" I fall into that category. Phenomenal content, great editing, & your English is on point (read the description😉). Subscribed! 👍
Check motojitsu channel also.
MCrider is very helpful also. Has a good focus on how to stay save on the road.
On bicycle I don't think I steer much and more counter but I lean with body
Why don’t you do the same instead of watching this video? 😝
Finally - an explanation that actually makes sense.
Nobody, including instructors, have been able to explain countersteering in a way that suggests they understand how it works - they all just sound confused themselves.
Thanks.
Probably the best counter steering video on RUclips. Good job
I've been riding for over 15 yrs and I've never had counter steering explained so eloquently, what a comprehensive explanation, thank you so much, I appreciate you family!
Excellent explanation of counter steering. Most of the time, you just hear, "You have to counter steer," but what does that mean? It's the "...brief period when we apply the force on the handle bars to change the lean angle..." Your explanation of initiating lean is the easiest for most people to grasp, and is simple - initiate lean opposite the turn direction so that the bike can turn into the direction desired. Plus, you are not leaning, only the bike is. You are actually staying upright, allowing the bike to lean beneath you.
the "funny" thing is that "you" and the "bike" form a shape-shifting vehicle with a moving centre of mass. "pressing" the bike into the turn (i.e. staying upright while the bike leans) is more related to comfort and oversight than to physics.
although keeping the torso largely in one space lowers the moment of inertia around the roll axis facilitating quicker leaning at slower speeds.
I agree wholeheartedly explained very well
The Very Best explanation I've heard......bar none
I've been riding for several years now, and you are the first person to explain counter-steering clearly and in a way I was able to understand. Wish I had this back when I was first learning how to ride. I learned everything by myself very slowly and still didn't realize what I was doing was counter-steering. Amazing video.
As someone from a country where there are tons of motorcycles and NO academies whatsoever I have to say: thank you.
I paid the Honda Official School and it had a 50x50m garage to practice and honestly, I have learnt SO MUCH MORE with your videos.
So, sincerely, thank you.

Great channel!! Many YT channels talk about bikes, some (often American) talk about 'beginners'bikes referring to 400ccs a 'small' bikes which is really rediculous. 400ccs already are VERY powerful. They recommend these huge bikes without giving any technique tips and exercises. Just buy the thing and figure it out. If you survive the first year. Your channel is obligatory viewing for all bikers, especially beginners. I always recommend learning the basics on a 50cc. Anyway, great channel!
9:23 This is the core summary of the entire topic! Countersteer is any change of handlebar direction that is opposite to lean angle. Thanks for separating the leaning from turning!
We can even expand the understanding. When we are done turning, we briefly turn the handlebar ‘more inside’ to make the bike stand up. It’s also the same countersteering.
We better call it “the principle of countersteer” instead of treating it like some special technique. All self-balancing objects must move its lower body outside in order to lean inside. All bikes change the lean angle by the principle of countersteer. Turn right to lean left, not go left.
This is without a doubt the best video on the subject of counter steering. Even though I have been riding bikes and knowingly using CS for over twenty years, I had yet to find a video that give clear and precise explanations of each aspect, to where one wasn't over stimulated by too much information all at once.
Your explanation and simple discription of how to steer at slow speeds are by far the best of the many videos I've seen...you are one KOOL DUDE!
That's a really good video, mate. Your personal riding skills are of a high standard, and your personable manner and clear, logical explanations really gets the message across.
You have the best explanation and the best accent! Thanks!
Wow! This is impressively explained imo, never have I been able to understand it this clearly before. It makes way more sense as an initial input, not for the whole turn.
Nice work, thank you. I'm 67 and there's always more to learn. Been riding since 1969 and quit for 11 years in 2012 until now. Just bought a Cf Moto 700 clx and having the most fun I've had on a bike in a very long time. Thanks again, really enjoy your instructions.
Professor of Orbital Mechanics, thanks for the video it was great!
Thank you for the clearest video on CS and motorcycle physics I've seen.
I appreciate these simple yet in-depth and highly detailed explanations. Thank you.
most vloggers will say counter steering only works on high speed. he showed them wrong.. crazy how he explains everything in detail and those bike skills man
I’ve seen lots of motorcycle tutorials but yours are by far the best. I’ve never heard anyone explain things so clearly and logically. Somehow the accent makes it even more effective, I love it :)
by far the best explanation on the basics of steering i have seen. i was struggling to understand.
Better than paid training.
At least if you enjoy physics and science behind a bike.
Really full of fundamental properties! Excellent video!
I refuse to counter steer! I will only steer directly! I don’t care about physics! I do what I want! 😂
J/K - thanks for this. When I recover from my latest accident in about 7 weeks, I will try these exercises. I already started experimenting with counter steering while riding before, but never understood its full potential until now. You rock! 🤘🏾
Been riding for over 5 years now and have never been able to grasp this concept until this breakdown. Of course its something you do naturally but being able to manipulate this at low speeds is super useful! Thank you for this!
This all finally makes sense! So many videos and people (even instructors) explained it to me, but I still feared the "slow turn". Thank you for making that fear vanish. Now I feel ever more playful on my bike.
Why you don't have more subscribers is beyond me. Some of the very best training and instructional videos anywhere!
Best explanation of steering that I have ever heard!
From someone thats been riding a while i never understood counter steering. Now i know i just didnt realise i was doing it. Thank you man!
Great video, excellent breakdown of how countersteering and motorbike stability works. With useful stuff to practice - the idea of leaving the bars to do what they do is one I hadn't found in the numerous other videos I've seen on this, so I'm looking forward to getting out to practice. Thank you 😎
So many people yap and yap about this. You are the first to talk about this simple engineering fact discovered centuries ago. The rake angle and gravity. It is built into every single steering system ever made. Bicycles, cars, office chairs and baby trolleys. With different rake angles you achieve the different steering effects that are explained so well in this video.
One of the best videos on counter steering I've seen and very nicely presented. Thanks.
EVERY ONE OF YOUR TUTORIALS IS EXCELLENT!!! You blow away all the other instructors.
You're on your way to millions of subscribers!
Thank you!!!
Subscribed dude! Love how you broke down the process. I've been doing this the whole time I've been riding and didn't know. That helps me become more aware of how to control it now. Thanks a ton!
Underrated video. Great explanation and awesome video steps to go along with it.
I've learnt so much from this video. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation!
This is the best explanation and break down of examples I have ever seen and heard. Super info/instructional videosplination 👍🏼
Outstanding explanation with even more outstanding demonstrations! Thankyou for creating such clear presentations!!
Your explanations and demonstrations are really very good and very clear, I have found your videos very helpful 😉👍. I loved the clear explanation of counter steering especially at low speed.
Very well explained and demonstrated, in fact, the best I have seen to date, well done.
Fantastic! So well put together and explained. And in a second language. Brilliant! Thank you!!!
The best video on the topic ❤ i loved the little snippet sounds and stop shots to explain the countersteering moment. Thank you!!
This is absolutely amazing u gave us science, instruction, and practical practice tips all in one video… will be share if this with anyone I can… thank you
Hey man, thankyou for this video! Absolutely brilliant explanation of the steering dynamics of a motorcycle. Keep the videos coming...ive got a lot to learn.
best and the clearest demonstration on counter steering ever, thanks for the video
Really clear and patient explanations. I can't wait to get my 1st bike and practice everything you said. Thank you for helping us noobs!
Even as a seasoned rider, there's always sth new to learn from your videos, also great and to the point explanations, kudos!
Thanks for this very informative video. As soon temperatures are getting better I’ll try your practice drills!
Thank you for this video. I was struggling taking corners with my new maxi scooter (my first ever) until I found your video. My weekend ride with this new machine was really enjoyable!
Hi Moto. This was the best explanation of counter steering that I have watched. I have ridden for a number of years and likely used this some but not to the extent you teach. Thanks very much for that clear understanding.
Absolutely amazing explanation, the best I’ve seen so far. Subscribed!!!!
This video has the absolute best descriptive explanation of counter steering principles I have ever heard... Awesome...
Exceptional explanation. Amazing footage. Great work man. Perfect.
this is the most comprehensive video i have watched on counter steering...thanks much
Very good job explaining, thank you, not everyone can detail it as much as I've seen from your explanation.
This is the best counter steering video I have ever seen. Excellent tutorial.
Gotta love your video presentation! Definitely Award-winning material for a film festival somewhere. Thank you very much!
Great stuff, explained in so clear and simple terms thanks 👍🏼
I don't even have a bike yet but feel a million times more confident after hearing this explanation. Was definitely like wtf?!! before watching this. Great work, thanks.
This was the best explanation of countersteering I have ever seen. Incredibly helpful for new riders or riders that do not fully exploit the control that countersteering offers. Thank you!
Wonderful. First explanation I have seen that makes total sense.
The best explanation of the concept. I have more than 100K km experience but never heard till now such a clear description of what actually is happening when we do this unconsciously 😁. Subbed and liked 👍
The best video for counter steering in yt!!
You answered all my questions.
Absolutely best slow speed handling instruction ,clear to the point a wealth of information packed in a brief lesson.
Great stuff for any rider. I've been on bikes for years and still learn new and importante basics. Jeep up the great work. Cheers from Portugal 🇵🇹
This the best instruction video for learning safe motorcycle control I have ever seen. Thank you.
This is by far the best video on counter steering I’ve seen on RUclips. Thanks for sharing this! As a newbie rider this is super helpful.
I first found out about this when I was around 10. Being Dutch, I always cycled to school and I wondered why it was impossible to move away from the curb when you went too close so your front tire was scraping the curb
This is the best explanation of counter steering. It answers all questions, and the demo is executed very well.
I appreciate your Humour, Great Driving skills, the eloquent, fluet communication AND Love for The beginners
Such an informative video for an beginner rider like myself. Thank you
Very well explained and definitely a comprehensive video discussing counter steering on motorcycles. This video along with most people don't know how bikes work video by veritasium explains the core principles of how counter steering works and why we do it when riding bikes.
16:13 🤣 Awesome content! I've been binge watching your videos since I started the motorcycle license course here (2 weeks now) and it has really helped me loosen up on the bike and perform the required manoeuvres almost with ease. Thank you!
This is a brilliant channel, best explanation and demonstration of riding techniques. Bike riding is amazing, so much more engaging than cars.
This helped me understand counter steering better and also the normal steering...you are amazing
Amazing content you're churning out mate, keep it coming.
Best combination of physical aspects and practice, you can learn with your brain AND with your feelings. You are a great teacher!
Thanks the best explanation and demonstration of the process I’ve seen. Been riding push bikes since I was able to walk and motorcycle for 30+ years. I think it’s always been there just no real understanding, awesome
This is probably the best video I've seen explaining the counter steering concept. So clearly defined with video that shows exactly how it works!! Thankyou so much!!
This is a pretty helpful video, first one which I could understand from how counter-steering works. Which, by the way, was taught in motorcycle school, but they were unable to explain, even when I directly asked about it. Now it is much clearer. Also to debunking of the myth of gyroscopic force.
You're the first person to explain countersteering in a way that I could understand. I'm not yet a motorcyclist but I'm not dumb either. Thank you very much. Cheers.
I've watched many videos re counter steering but none matches your explantaion style which makes it crystal clear...
Thks for your valuable efforts and best wishes
I’ve watched more videos than I’d like to admit, on this subject. And this is, by far, the most in depth video… providing the best explanation I’ve watched.
Thankyou soooo much. I used to try to convince others of this and not even ‘professional ‘ riders would believe it now it is so well explained
This is the best video about countersteering I have seen so far. I managed to flip my bike quickly without fear of falling after watching your video.
When, sometimes, I tried to communicate this information, it seemed to me that the fact that you could mantain up a stopped bicycle just by acting on the steering was enough to demonstrate that it was the steering that kept you up, but it never worked for anyone: as you say in the video, the answer was: I haven't never done counter steering! Bravo
Brilliant! Clear explanation and demonstration, thank you 👍
Very helpful video. Thank you so much for the clear and simple explanation. I'm looking forward to using these steps to increase my slow speed maneuvering.
Great video and explanation! As a new rider I learn a lot from your videos
Thank you for this very clear explanation. I'm going to head to a clear parking lot this weekend to practice.
Thank you !!. As a new rider I just can't wrap my head around the idea of counter steering. But this video really helped me understand it better
Your are amazing, thanks you. I had to find it out by myself on my GS 1150 Adv. , but your explanation make it absolutely clear and all the pieces of puzzles came together.
Good luck and take care, man...😊
This is the best Video I have found on this Subject. Thank You, Thank You. Now just to Practice, but first I need to watch the Friction Zone. I will be definitely watching all your Videos.👍👍❤️😁
This made more sense of the counter steering discussion than an other video thank you so much
Thanks man. Best way i've seen it explained. "It's just that thing you're already doing" :)
