I was in sales for seven years and found quickly it’s not worth your time to hold anything unless they leave a deposit. Maybe 30% of the time they actually followed through.
I also sold through newspapers and realized it was best to meet half way. If they drove the whole way they felt entitled to a discount or they wouldn’t bite if you were already down to your bottom dollar. If you drive all the way to them then they have no time or effort involved and often would be less serious about buying at that moment and wouldn’t think twice about wasting your time.

Really wise observations. We have had people leave deposits and agree to pick up the item within 48 hours and then not show up (and ask for their deposit back). We have had people pay in full and then not pick up their item, drag it out for another week (asking for extensions), and then ask for their money back. Just curious: Do you also keep their deposit if they don't pick up the item? We think deposits are non-refundable. So, either they show up and get the items within the allotted time, or you keep their deposit.

@@UndertheMedian I was upfront in case they changed their minds and would usually keep like 10% of the deposit if they didn’t purchase. I explained that was only fair since their actions had most likely resulted in a lost sale and they usually understood.
Unless I had paid to advertise the item and then I’d usually warn ahead that they’d forfeit the deposit if not purchased.

@@brandonmartin4044 , thanks for your quick response to my question. We always struggle with what parameters to put on deposits. Your guidelines are good, common sense ones. Thanks so much!

Always a good idea to meet somewhere neutral. The lobby of the police department is a popular choice and they are accustomed to people selecting it as a meeting place.

Sounds like you had alot of fun with garage sales Earlier in life My neighbors and my family had garage sales and sold toys children's clothes baby equipment and household goods Now we don't have enough unwanted stuff to sell we really got rid of 70 per cent of our stuff by giving to family and Goodwill and a local thrift store your tips were awesome tips for those selling their goods

These days, we prefer to donate items and then get together for a potluck dinner with our garage sale buddies and then play board games. The kids all grew up together and the adult kids all try to join us for dinner when we get together. So much fun!

Have you ever had any garage sales selling stuff all at once as we get older and become minimalistic we don't have much to sell we don't go to garage sales we have a rule to have one of many items in our home makes life easier and simpler and managing your home is easier and cleaning is easier ask yourself how much stuff do I want to manage anymore I am in the place in life to live a minimalist life for me experiences are more important than stuff yes frugalism and minimalism can go together so yes sell items if you can use money for experiences and research out there there are many free experiences be creative think outside the box

We used to have a garage sale every single year with two other couples. We started at 6am with Larry making pancakes for everyone before we opened the doors of the garage to the public. We played dance music from the 1940's and gave away free coffee. People loved it and looked for our signs every year. We had SO much fun. Now, we get together twice a year (without the garage sale).

I wanted to buy a great pair of walking shoes from someone that still had the tags on them even, at a great price. It was all set up that the woman was going to meet me at my office parking lot of the transaction to take place. She lived in another city so I was explaining how to get there and I mentioned it was next door to the police station. She never ended up coming (she'd said she was almost there) and she also took down the listing. Hmm...very suspicious...wonder if they were stolen or something. It was disappointing since I thought it was legit and I was going to buy 80 dollar walking shoes for 25 dollars.

In general I like your advise except copying someone else's description.
I had that happen to me multiple times, even photos that I took copied by other sellers and that is completly not okay.
I take my time to write a good description and take great photos to sell the items not for someone else's gain or shortcut.
