    Just found you guys. I wished I'd learned to be frugal earlier in life but that's water under the bridge. I'm enjoying your tips. I bought a house two years ago, with a mortgage, and added a rental unit that pays the mortgage and then have a 3rd floor AirBnb that pays utilities. This allows me to focus on savings as I'm way behind. I watched this video because I need some tips on this. I traveled by car from Maine to Florida for my son's wedding in November. I ended up having to replace my 20 year old beauty of a car when I arrived in Florida. Totally not planned. Now I'm going to be looking at how to pay off the loan this year while continuing my goal of saving at least $1000 a month. After taxes and insurance I take home $3000 a month, I think it's doable with your tips. And as a side note, I had a dentist tell me I needed $10,000 in crowns, 20 years ago. I didn't have the work done. I'm now having the mercury fillings removed and replaced with whatever they use now - total bill for all the work $1000 and I still don't need crowns. Feeling lucky with that one.

    So glad I found you and have been binge watching your videos. Your blooper outtakes crack me up and I love your tips and advice. My husband also came home from the dentist and needs two crowns and a bone graft $$$$. Even our dentist (here in Canada) charges crazy fees and not covered at all by our insurance. The line that only one can panic, is what I need to hear.

    I love this step plan!
    Especially with dentists a second opinion can save you tons of money. I have saved myself and other people hundreds and even their teeth because I told them to get a second opinion of a trustworthy dentist. I had quite some trouble with my teeth and met some really shady and greedy dentists in the process. The more you seem to be in an emergency the more these dentists will take advantage of it.
    Also ask your insurance what the rules in your country are. Here you can switch dentists during most treatments, but not so easily during e.g. dental implants because of warranty regulations. Get informed before you overpay in more than one way. ♥️

    We have a consistent car savings fund as well! We have 2 daily driver cars, 1 "work" truck for back and forth to lowes (was so helpful when we decided to fence in our yard this year!!), and 1 project truck for my husband! All our vehicles are paid in full, and while we have other transportation options to tide us over, we still are saving for a new car for when my daily driver car goes kaput! It's almost at 250,000 miles but *thankfully* keeps on trucking!!

    I’m very thankful that I’ve got my carte vitale and only have a top up mutuelle insurance for all our health, dental and optical here in France. Our healthcare care insurance costs us 80€ a month for the two of us as our taxes pay 65% of our healthcare, optical and dental. Healthcare is sooooo expensive for you.

      I work in Dentistry and the longer you wait and do not come in for regular appointment s it cost more. So try to set up in your monthly budget for Dental/ medical. Having your own HSA set up is very effective.

    I hope this doesn't sound snarky but, one thing they didn't point out with the teeth was that if Lary had had some orthodontics this problem would likely not have come up. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

    Do you have an HSA? I find it to be very helpful and reduces my taxable income. There is a max you can put in yearly, but Is very helpful for unexpected medical expenses.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for asking. We do have an HSA, which we have consistently been able to put more money into each year as our children leave home and we free up more money. Our medical deductible is astronomical though. $4200 per person and $8400 for our family. Our dental plan is separate and they will pick up some of the cost of dental care every year.

    How much do you save per month. Percentage? Thanks

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 года назад +5

      I add everything up at the end of the year and figure out the total percentage we saved over the course of the year. So, Larry and I will be doing this soon. However, in general, we tithe 10%, live on 65%, and the other 25% is savings and goes toward our short, medium, and long-term goals.

      @@UndertheMedian does the 25 percent include emergency fund

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 года назад +1

      @@sherrypoole4430 , our emergency fund is fully funded. So, we no longer add to it - unless we need to dip into it for some reason. We keep a written list of short, medium, and long-term goals. Short-term goals are those we intend to meet in 18 months or less. So, most of the time, these are the goals that are listed on our yearly budget. The 25% includes these goals.
