- Hello Fellow Woodworkers!
Welcome to this weeks' edition of The Garage Workshop and and epic laminate build!
In this weeks' video I teach myself how to laminate the surface of my mitre saw bench and work bench having never used laminate before....
It's not all plain sailing as I encounter issue after issue! Do I manage to finish the job?

Well done. Looks great.
Thanks Matt :)
It is much easier to put contact adhesive on with a spreader than a roller. You can use spray contact adhesive, if you spray several coats on each surface and it works great
Hi Mark...yeah I agree...the roller was ok up to a point...but it wasn't great.
Well done on doing as well as you did.
Thanks Mark :)
Speaking as someone who has done a fair bit of lamination on quite a few jobs.
Like someone else's had said, use a notch spreader/Trowel to apply the adhesive.
If it's cold, heat it up a little it helps.
Always allow a 25mm extra for trimming.
Use a few extra sticks to allow you to start in the centre and move out
To the ends.
You dont need to use the tin snips. Just use your trim cutter 👍
To get rid of the edge, what has not been laminated .
Clamp a straight edge on top and use your trim router if its long enough.
Protect the edges because laminate on the edge does chip easily.
Also, it should not matter on your build .
Normally, you have to use a balancing laminate on the other side, which is cheaper then the finished side.
Looks good mate.
Thank you so much...that is fab feedback and much appreciated!
Thanks for the video! Good to see some videos with miatakes and how to work through them. I feel like all my builds have little moments like that.
Hi and thanks for the feedback..yes...mine more than most :)
Could chamfering the edge of your benches sort out the gaps as well as sort out the razor sharp edges?
Hi Andrew....yes it could.....I am also going to put a hardwood frame on it too. Thanks for the feedback :)
Could you trim a mm or 2 from the perimeter and add an edge trim? It would prevent catching the edge of the laminate in future and be a nice detail. Some hard wood that could accent the bench?
Great idea...I am definately going to edge it
You have don'e a great job, It's matter of going for it once it all prepped and its paid off, as always a great and honest video, it looks good Take care
Thanks Shaun...great feedback as always!
Chamfer it the finest amount. Router or take a file to it and stroke down.
Will do Fearsome...thank you!
Looks great. Anither job well done. Is this laminate scratch resistant?
Thanks Mark!
Gary well done - don’t think it’s easy to apply - I’m looking into it at the moment and got to say I’m a bit apprehensive around doing it when as you say it’s not cheap!
No Duncan it is a big investment but I lovee how it looks :)
You could have put the. Bad spot at the back that way it would not be seen
Hi Kisarader...thanks for the comment...i did put it at the back :)
