Back when the Fa cup final was truly an occasion for all football fans to enjoy
We were so lucky to be there. Still feel the tremendous excitement of that goal from Bobby Stokes - nearly 50 years later…….
For some Southampton supporters it feels like more than half a century ago.
Back in the days when the FA Cup was a huge prize and the final was a magnificent event.
David Coleman is such a wonderful commentator. I love the way he makes his trade mark line, "One Nil", and then keeps mum, allowing the TV audience to soak up the roar from the celebrating fans
and no inane statistic references
loved to listen to david he made the day even better
Exactly right. His emphatic "one-nil" followed by a pause, as you say to be able to hear the roars of the crowd, and only then his follow-up comment. So simple, yet so dramatic. No other commentator does it better,
As a 10yr old Urmston born schoolboy this was the 1st game i can fully remember watching & genuinely being heartbroken at our loss that day, im 58yrs now the memories from then till now has been a privilege to experience, i dont get to see many games now with me now living in the usa, but ill be flying into the uk for the Liverpool game coming up in the prem, once a red always a red.
A mate who supports Saints met Bobby and asked to buy him a drink. Bobby in his west country lilt said "No, let me buy you one". Legend.
He wasn't from the West Country, he was from Portsmouth. But they all sound like farmers 😂
Bobby was a Portsmouth boy, wasn’t he?
Never forget what this club achieved
" McCalliog to Stokes he`s onside 1 - 0 " As a boy the FA cup final was like Christmas day. All day build up when very little live football was on the tv. And that commentary from David Coleman will always stay with me. Not a Saints fan but that game was one of my favorites of all time. Alongside that Sunderland v. Leeds epic. I dont know for sure but was that the first time the Admiral kit was first seen. Always loved those little logo`s running down the Southampton kits sleeve and shorts. I know Norwich City had the same design the following season. Happy days. Yes i am sad. 😂
Yes, it was abit like Chrismas day. Football on fo much of the day and then the whole game live. Would get nervous even though my team wasn´t in it.
i remember watching the game in melbourne, australia with family and friends.
when stokes scored the glass of beer i had in my hands hit the roof.
a great night and indeed my brother and i went to cardiff for the 2003 cup final.
That's my Uncle Bobby ,so proud x
Glory, Glory to Southampton
Glory, Glory to Southampton
Glory, Glory to Southampton
And the Saints go marching on, on, on!
I remember watching this on the day, myself and my mates are Chelsea, but we all wanted Southampton to win.
It was a superb strike :)
Yep, cocky Man Utd got their just deserts.
I think everyone in ‘76 (bar Pompey and the Red Devils) wanted Southampton to win.
A superb pass from Jim McCalliog and a fabulous finish from Bobby Stokes. a real picture goal from all concerned.
Absolutely.
Jim McCalliog runs a guest house now with his wife. He was on Channel 4s Four in a Bed a couple of years ago.
Golden days and the romance of the FA cup when small clubs upset the odds, as a Man Utd fan it’s very sad that days like this will never happen again.
So true it was very important.
Why has this happened? Is it because the Premier League is now such a big thing? I'm aware of how the FA Cup - for a long time the most famous club competition in the world - has been devalued. Such a shame, really.
Wigan done city
@@SMSJSC In short, 💰💰💰💰
Too many foreigners in the premier league, was much better when you had all England teams but times change, too much change.
4 hours build up to cup final on tv ,used to be a great day,
Even The league cup final back then was bigger than the FA cup is today
At school in the new forest -before this game , most kids supported Leeds Utd ( wankers -dean court 1990) or Chelsea or Man U but this game set the Saints up for generations of new support . He was a very nice guy apparently and he deserves more recognition from the club when he’s such a legend with the supporters . Up the Cherries by the way 😀
Who?
One of my earliest memories.
David colmans famous catchphrase one nil always loved to hear him say it
In my opinion, this is the best FA Cup shock ever.
Southampton shutting those hordes of boorish Man United glory hunters was very enjoyable to see.
TheVilla Aston Glory hunters in 76? 20 years too early. You were having more success than Utd at that point.
Best, or biggest? 'Best' if you weren't a Man United fan. But as Cup shocks go, it doesn't really compare with Leeds-Sunderland of '73. That was the biggest shock of all time, I'd say.
@@SMSJSC Wimbledon
@@SMSJSC Also, the greatest save I’ve ever seen
I was 14 when the game was played. My parents had stopped me going to football games after I got arrested 6 months before … against Millwall!
Anyway the the night before the FA cup final I got a ticket and went anyway. My parents knew I had gone to the game for sure but God bless they didn’t say anything!
Brilliant day for the underdogs, I know because I was THERE , left Salisbury 6 in the morning from Endless street bus station ( no longer there now ) returned at 20: 00 hrs that evening , the bridges on the motor way on the return journey we full of Southampton flags scarves and fans . I will never forget that day. Southampton is my Religion Saint Mary's is my Church.
My dad said exactly the same about the bridges hope we can do the same this year spirit of 76
Lol. 6th place in the Second Division wins the FA Cup at Wembley against Manchester United. The Romance of the Cup...
As a young lad I used to hang about outside Ninian Park to get opposition players autographs after matches. 99% of players just did a quick squiggle. The best proper autographi I got was when Saints came to town. Bobby Stokes gave a proper signature, and had a chat with all the young fans before getting on the team bus. He was an example to all pro footballers. Was taken far too early.
As an 11 year old, I was very aggrieved by Southampton winning against the run of play, and became a firm Manchester United fan for the next 20 years. Looking back, Southampton probably deserved the win. These highlights seem to suggest Southampton had more chances than I remember! For the goal, Buchan (number 6) would have been playing Stokes onside (see 3:20 and more so the replay at 3:43).
Nope, see my comment above. I was there, and Stokes was level with Buchan; that was offside back then. Also, Martin Buchan is my mum's step-brother. I spoke with him a few years after this, and he called the linesman all the fucks under the sun for that decision.
Same mate I was heartbroken 11 yr old an it still hurts
@@themancuniancandidate2744
Graceless Manchester United supporters can't even shut up about this, after all the cup final wins they have had.
@@thevillaaston7811 I remember going to Villa Park in the mid 90s to watch United play VIlla. It was a sell out attendance. The week before, Villa played a cup game against a lower league team, and the place was half empty. I thought the idea was to support your team no matter who they played. Villa fans just want to see United, apparently.
@@themancuniancandidate2744
What has that got to do with the 1976 FA Cup Final
And a commentator (David Coleman) who knew when to shut up and let the viewer enjoy the match !!
I was there, aged just 11, and Bobby Stokes was definitely onside.
Was he bollocks
When football was about football, not about MONEY.
I met the entire Southampton team in Barbados while they were celebrating their victory.
When the sun came out in the second half and never went back in for 12 weeks
Goalkeepers without gloves were the real kings.
In Australia we would stay up for the 11 PM start. It was a bit of an Aussie tradition bac then.
I'm not a Southampton fan, but I loved this final. Truth is I loved the FA Cup, as a boy nothing else mattered in May. Do you think Stepney could have done better? Who cares? 😂
Stokes hadn't scored for a while but Mike channon said to him you're going score today mate and boy did he a great strike right where the keeper couldn't get it and just the right time
I was there with my dad, and right in line with Stokes when he was played through. He was in line with the last defender, and back then that meant offside; you had to be in front of the defender. I remember thousands of United fans all screaming "OFFSIDE!!!" at the same time.
Hahaha
He was definitely offside.
@@petek7822 🤣🤣🤣
Martin Buchan said he was onside, that's good enough for me.
@@1976mayday Martin Buchan is my uncle, and I’m telling you straight he did not say that
Stokes was definitely ON side. I have to be honest here even as a Man Utd fan ..just visualise the grass stripes in relation to the MAN utd player who played him ONSIDE- You'd have to have poor sight, be stupid or dishonest or all 3 to say Bobby Stokes was offside. Great goal too ... R.I.P Bobby
I thought he was offside to be honest.
Unbiased Utd fan here. Buchan coming out right of picture plays him on as McCalliogs pass was in the air a while.
@@steveblack610 Looks like it. Buchan only comes into the picture a second after the ball is played (at 3:20 and 3:43), by which time Stokes had already moved a couple of yards forward.
Level was off in those days remember.
Love the wing play
Alex stepney, great utd player, but that goal,it was like he was 70 years old.
What I loved was sharing the managers benches at Wembley no gaps etc unlike the managers today who jump up and down on the sidelines 😂😂
I always thought that was a bit odd. Unique to Wembley? I think it was. You always had the opposing managers right next to each other. Strange thought nowadays.
I love that 💕🙌
I still haven't gotten over this result 😒
Just wipe your tears with the 10 FA Cups you've won since then!
I was in the stand same side as where the camera is but level with where Stokes got his pass, he was offside.
clearly daylight between Buchan with Greenhoff and Stokes at point of pass , can only surmise Forsyth at right back was playing him on but even thats borderline.
It's sad what happened to Bobby Stokes.
What happened to Bobby Stokes?
Newc70 drifted out of football. Died in 1995 aged only 44. Was working in a cafe in Southampton I think. Liked a drink and a smoke. Pneumonia killed him.
I used to watch the Southampton left back play at Gillingham. David Peach #3 looked out of position in the clips I saw him in. Ryan Bertrand now at the club as left back also got his start at Gillingham.
When the FAC was worth something
Did he mean to control it like that with the back of his foot? What a goal.
I was there. He was offside
Never showed the dirty tackle McQueen did. Outrageous professional foul that stopped a certain goal.
He wasn't at Man U then. Brian Greenhoff, maybe, or Martin Buchan?
united knocked them out next season in a replay on their way to winning the trophy.
But this one hurt.
@@thevillaaston7811 mate i am still gettin over it ha
And I was there...Bob of Nursling
Could goal keepers not afford gloves back then?
A MASSIVE Celebration In SOT'ON 😀g
I remember the press cuttings for the victory parades, from memory Soton had 200k turn out and United had 300k turnout for getting beat with the Doc promising United fans that we would win the cup the following year at the town hall! Very similar in 1979 when more turned out to see United beaten by Arsenal than what turned out for Arsenals victory parade. In 1977 it was reported an estimated 750k turned out for the victory celebration following the 2-1 win over Liverpool.
United's 'keeper should have saved that soft shot easily.
He went down in slow motion.
Stepney should have saved it.....I cried,as a young lad.....
First FA Cup final I watched as a little six year old. Supported United that day and nearly fifty years later I still love United. Bad decision on the day but made up for it over the years.
It was way offside too. 😕
Man U had run out of ideas by the hour mark. They had given their best, which was not that good on the day, and had not scored. There ws only ever going to be one winner after that.
No sign of the moment in the second half when Sammy McIlroy hit the bar with a header?
Wealdstone Raider played in this game..
Typical offside protests by those who don't know the rules or how to use the pause button on the video. Use the pattern of the mown grass and you'll see Stokes was a couple of yards onside at least.
Thats rediculous . 2 yards is 6 feet , he was not onside by 6 feet dont be silly . It was very close , extremely close.
I got a brand new combine harvester was number one in the charts.a year for all you yokels
You do KNOW where Southampton is?
Clearly off side VAR would have ruled it out.
VAR would have given offside
Me And My Girl Got Pissed With Them On the ROYAL PIER Ballroom 1976 😁😁😁😁😁g
wow the goalkeeper wasn't wearing any gloves
really looks like Stokes is offside here.... Poor goalkeeping also. Any premier league goalkeeper today would have stopped that weak shot
Utd fan. He was well onside. Stepney terrible as usual, threw one in the very next final (Jimmy Case).
3:20.
Only JUST !!!PHEW 😁g
He died in 1995 from pneumonia
Isn't Bobby Stokes dead now?
Yes, he died in 1995. Very young.
@@xpat73 Seriously?? I recall watching an excellent series of BBC programmes called Match of the 70s, One programme for each year of the decade. Stokes said his piece about that match and the homecoming. Thing is, I'm absolutely certain that was first shown in the late 90s. Ah, well. RIP Bobby.
Stokes went on to play for local rivals Pompey, but he made little impact at Fratton and his career faded away.
It was fucking offside! Where is VAR when you need it?
I do not think it was. There is a player in this side just off camera who plays him on. You can see this player and the camera pan towards the goal.
Defo Offside. VAR would disallow it .
How can you tell from these pictures?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
There was no VAR then and the goal stood. Buchan played him onside.
Scummers were lucky there was no VAR then. Stokes was a yard offside.
No. He was onside.
as soon as the ball was pasted david coleman said he was onside
offside
No.
No
Stokes was clearly offside when the ball was played. It wasn't even close. Mind, the officials all looked about sixty back then so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised the linesman missed it.
You couldn't be a match official past 48 back then . Stokes was level with the Utd defenders closest to him and the third defender on the right was ahead of Stokes when the ball was played . Maybe you should of gone to Specsavers !
It's not possible to tell from the angle, because the far right United defender is not on the screen when the ball is played.
No you want to learn the rules bias prick
@@diptastik5651 Should HAVE gone to Specsavers, not "of". Terrible grammar.
The referee was 74 years old a fortnight after this game; the linesmen were 55 and 67 respectively.
I have never understood why in 1-on-1 situations with the goalkeeper more players do not just chip/dink/lob the ball over the keeper. There is a Mick Channon chance where all he had to do was lift the ball over the keeper and it would have just rolled into the net. He just blasted it.
In the modern era I have seem Raheem Stirling do the same thing so many times; just blast it straight at the keeper. Perhaps, in the heat of the moment it is much more difficult than it looks. You need to have situational awareness in fractions of a second.
Perhaps that is what separates the great players from just the good players. I just read a newspaper article about Bobby Stokes. Very sad. Still nobody can ever take away the feeling he had of scoring the winning goal in a Cup Final.
