Hi there from Ireland, just discovered your channel I have a Student Mk1.5 my self that needs some repair Thank you for your efforts making these videos and I look forward to more
Great to hear from you Seamus and to hear that you have the same trusty machine! I won't be able to do anymore Colchester Student videos until I visit my overseas workshop in May. In the meantime I will be covering other topics based on my UK workshop.
Hey there! I just got one of these, myself. Did you know that the little screw in the top of the oil filler cap is supposed to have been removed and thrown away upon commissioning? That screw was there on mine, too.. since May 1967. 😂 Did you replace the oil seal as well? Mine is leaking from there as well as the point where the oil drain tube threads into the housing.
I didn't know that the screw should have been removed! To allow the gearbox to breathe, perhaps? In a way I am glad it was still in place since I transported the drill in the back of my car on its side and it sat like that overnight. Not a single drop. However, I think my oil seal will need to be replaced at some point. Thanks for your comments.
Hello Mauritz, Following this video I ordered what I thought was to be a Tufnol 56 tooth 16DP gear blank. However the supplier sent a steel blank before I could correct the confusion and said on the phone that they would quote for a Tufnol gear but that it would be expensive as it would be a 'special'. Understandably it was - more than the Meddings spare off the shelf. The supplier I used (and also used for my Colchester Student lathe renovation featured on this channel) is HPC Gears, Chesterfield, UK. I have been very pleased with their service, but on this occasion this isn't going to be a viable option. I have since ordered the part off the shelf from Meddings, Ivybridge, UK. They were very helpful over the phone. So I am not going to make the saving I was hoping for! What I might try is comparing the Tufnol gear with the steel gear and make this part of my refurbishment series in case it is of interest to others. I suspect that it will be noisy and I am not sure that the lubrication will be adequate. It might be worth a try.
I really enjoyed the technical description of the pressure angle and the way you worked it out. I learnt something there. Thanks.
Thanks. The proof will be when I first run the machine; we will see!

Excellent episode. Looking forward to the next. 👍😀
Thanks Andrew. It should be less difficult to follow provide follow up material with a workshop more or less to hand.
Golly good work! Thanks again
Jolly - sorry
Glad you liked it Steve. It was definitely time to start something new.

Great stuff! Where are you buying your gear from? I also need the same gear for my drill.

@@Workshopfriend Thank you for the reply. We need somebody who can make the gears out of Delrin (cheaper than Tufnol).
???????
Can you give me a clue as to what your '?s' refer to? I was at a loss as how to respond.
