    David Douglas-Duncan relates that when he photographed the Korean War on a pair of Leica 111B's he used this Nikkor 50mm F1.4 lens because it was sharper than the Leitz 50mm F1.5. He also says that the majority of photojournalists covering the war also used Nikkor lenses in favour of Leitz lenses for this reason.

    Nice review, Matt. The rangefinder Nikkor 50/1.4 is a Sonnar design. That makes for a unique rendering which you seem to like. The "mushy" corners are to a good extent due to the field curvature inherent in the Sonnar scheme. If you happen to have a Canon 50/1.5 or a post-war Zeiss (Opton) 50/1.5 a comparison may be instructive. It seems the closest relative in the F-mount world would be a Nikkor-S 58/1.4. (I never had the opportunity to try one out, and they are expensive collectors' items these days.) To the poor & purely utilitarian Sonnar-lovers among us I still recommend a Jupiter-8 (up to mid 60s).

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Год назад +2

      Thanks! Yes I agree it reminds me of my Zeiss a Sonnar CRF but less round bokeh. I never did get the Csnon 1.5 but I know it’s a Sonnar too. Yes agree I should try to do these vs a J8 (I’ve done it got myself in the past, J8 was the worst of the 3, Nikon was my favourite because of the wacky OOF rendering + sharp centre. Zeiss is excellent at f2 (see that video verses Summarit).

    So yea. This lens is amazing and the reason why I chose the 50 cron instead of the APO-Lanthar. If we compare the difference between the pictures at 7:48 and 7:49 you can see how many looks you can get from this lens just by changing the aperture and distance. You can express ideas more clearly with a lens that isn’t pixel perfect at every aperture all the time.

    Great video as usual, Matt. I have the LTM version and use it on my Leica IIIf. At f1.4 it is too mushy to my taste, clearly better at f2.0. However, from f4.0 onwards my Elmar 5cm f3.5 gives clearly better results. For the looks, there is probably no better combination than the Nikkor and the Leica III. What a beauty, and what a joy to shoot with it.

Yeah I shot a whole roll recently on that lens all at f/1.4 on my Nikon SP indoors with artificial light and there was so much glow, as if there was a really strong Pro mist filter. It’s worth noting that the lens itself cost about the same as a pro mist filter, lol! Also, practically speaking, I feel like I get similar results from a Contax rangefinder and a coated Sonnar 50/1.5.

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams Год назад +4

      The Nikkor is a Sonnar-type design (fewer individual elements, more groups of elements cemented together) while the Canon 50/1.4 is a Gauss-type (or Planar-type, or Opic-type, depending on whose books you read) design with more separated elements. The Gauss type gives the designer more flexibility, so is used on most modern lenses, but the Sonnar design was popular through the '40s because it had fewer air-to-glass surfaces, which meant better contrast and less flare in the days before lens coating became widespread. Generally speaking, this design difference meant the Nikkors have higher central sharpness and contrast at wide apertures, while the Canons have more even performance across the field. Another thing you used to read “back in the day” was that the Nikkors had better consistency in assembly than either Leica or Zeiss lenses, so you were less likely to get a sample that was a “dog”, while Leica and Zeiss had more sample-to-sample variation. Now, of course, finding an example with good glass and mechanics trumps all those considerations!
