That was a total life saver - I knew my late grandfather had a Leica III: but could not work out the model. So I have a very satisfying to hold LIIIc with a Summicron F5 lens. 😊
Awesome Info cheers. I bought my first leica a Q2 last year and absolutely adore the thing, but I still enjoy shooting film, I really fancied the M2 but even more I fancy one of the screw mount models, the 111f or G are looking favorable.
Very useful. The nuances are very small, but this helped a lot. How can we identify pre-war post-war Leica Is that do not have any viewfinder / rangefinder?
Yes, Leica did make rangefinders that could be mounted in the camera’s accessory shoe. There were many versions - the FODIS was one of the more common. It was an accessory and not part of the camera.
Hello, I have a Leica that, based on my research online, has a serial number indicating it's a iif, but it has the flash sync dial and the red dial. What could this be? An error in the serial number, or is it possibly from the early transition to the iiif, or could it have been returned to the factory to have these extras added? Thank you in advance, excellent video!
A IIf has flash sync so I think it’s correct. This is one of the more unusual variants I didn’t cover in the video. A IIf is a IIIf without slow speeds.
I just got a hold of a Leica NR.814 156 GMBH DBP do you what year and model that is?Is there a documentation on that camera,I could not find anything on the net.
I recently came into IIIc. It’s in fairly good shape. It needs some repairs and new body cover. The 5cm lens is in need of a cleaning. Would you recommend anyone here in the states that could do this for me ? Thanks, Rick…..🇺🇸
Yes, the 50mm Elmar was sold with the Leica IIIf. You’ll need to check the serial numbers to confirm approximate dates of manufacture (lots of resource online).
I have had a LEICA II a // with serial number 6247 for years. // Unrestored (just as it left the Leica factory before World War II). It is in good condition and works.DOES ANYONE KNOW ITS VALUE?
I have my father's 1936 Model IID It still works, and the shutter sounds like a Rolls Royce car door: a satisfying clunk! It's never been speed checked, but I doubt it's far off spec. Unfortunately it's now worthless, my Watchmaker father fitted and synced a flash connection... a clever engineer, useless with investments 😂 What would I rather have? A £1k camera, or a working piece of history that I took an award winning photie with 40 odd years ago, that my father used, and I still possess (still works, but like everyone else I'm now digital)
I think you may misunderstand: this was not a factory adjustment, it was a clever, and he was a craftsman, but amateur finesse... I'm a craftsman in my own write (a multi-media journalist 😂 with a merit) who is really a violin maker (Luthier) Daddy Deare was a Watchmaker buggering about with cameras was an also ran (LOL 😂)
Hello, The video is over a year ago, but I would like to point out that my iif has a shutter speed of 1/1000s, I now have the 9th edition of the pocket book in English and today I got the 7th edition on Ebay😁👌 which is in German. Thanks for the video. Lg Anderl
Great breakdown! One niggle, the IIIg was not discontinued when the M3 was introduced, they were manufactured concurrently from 1954 until 1960.
Yes, you’re right. Leica offered both cameras side by side for a few years. Thanks for commenting- always appreciated

Thanks - glad the video was useful.
Wow, my IIIa and I thank you, that's the clearest description I've seen. Now just to figure out hw to work the beast!
Thanks - very kind.
Very useful rundown on the differences and how to distinguish the various models. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! The numerous Leica / Leitz variants can be a little bewildering!
Awesome Info cheers. I bought my first leica a Q2 last year and absolutely adore the thing, but I still enjoy shooting film, I really fancied the M2 but even more I fancy one of the screw mount models, the 111f or G are looking favorable.
Glad it was useful. Enjoy your Leica!
@@WorldwideCameraExchange cheers mate I shoot loads of cameras, brands formats etc, but the Q2 is pretty special I'm finding it hard to put down.
Thank you so much! I seem to have a 3f! So excited to used it! Even if I have no idea for now 📸
Glad it was useful. Enjoy your Leica.
Wow, this is very clear and concise, thanks.
Glad it was useful - thank you
Nicely done. Thank you.
Perfectly summarized! Thank you!
Thank you! Hope it was useful.
Good evening Jonathan. A great insight into the World of Leica Cameras. Many thanks and Kind regards Colyn. Subscriber!
Thank you - appreciated
Many thanks for this brief but very useful method of identification
Thank you. Glad it was useful.
Very useful. The nuances are very small, but this helped a lot.
How can we identify pre-war post-war Leica Is that do not have any viewfinder / rangefinder?
I only covered the main Leica models. There are resources online that’ll allow you to identify the model from the serial number.
for the fixed lens leica 1s some of them had a vertical rangefinder that was not coupled with the lens
Yes, Leica did make rangefinders that could be mounted in the camera’s accessory shoe. There were many versions - the FODIS was one of the more common. It was an accessory and not part of the camera.
Actually the M3 came out in 1954 but the IIIg was produced from 1956-60.
Thanks for commenting
Excellent demonstration
Glad it was helpful!
Very informational. Where can I get my Leica 111 f or g appraised?
Any local Leica dealership should be able to help.

but it is also possible that it has been rebuilt, there are many variants e.g. from iii to iiif and so on.
It’s always possible. But why dismiss the most obvious and probable explanation?
Simple and efficient. Thx a lot
Thanks. Glad it was useful.
very clear information here, thanks!
Glad it was useful
I have a Leica llla according to your excellent description. However my serial # doesn’t appear on the search website to confirm circa?
It was quite common for earlier cameras to be converted so the numbers don’t always match Leica’s production records.
Great survey, thank you!
Thanks. Glad it was useful.
Do some of the III c's come without the slow shutter speed dial? Mine has a one piece top, but it doesn't have the slow speed dial in the front.
Check the serial number online. There are numerous Leica variants.
你可以讲讲alphax快门的操作吗?网上很少。
Can you explain the operation of the alphax shutter? Very few online.
They are very simple shutters. Operation is similar to most other contemporaneous leaf lenses.
I just got a hold of a Leica NR.814 156 GMBH DBP do you what year and model that is?Is there a documentation on that camera,I could not find anything on the net.
It’s probably a IIIf from the mid-1950s. There’s plenty of information online, and on this channel!
Thanks, and what about the Leica IIId 1943?
Very, very rare so not worth mentioning in a short video. Other variants exist too. Again, I didn’t include to avoid over complicating.
Great presentation thank you.
Thank you

Talk to Tamarkin cameras. The cost of repair might exceed the camera’s value but an overhauled Leica will serve faithfully for decades.
@@WorldwideCameraExchange money is not the issue, I just can’t let that camera become a dust collector. Thanks for the advice ! 👍
Very useful Thanks
Glad it was useful - thanks

Thanks. It looks like I now know I have a 111f. It has a 5cm 3.5 Elmar lens. Would this be the right period lens for the body?
Yes, the 50mm Elmar was sold with the Leica IIIf. You’ll need to check the serial numbers to confirm approximate dates of manufacture (lots of resource online).
Thanks.
Happy to help

I know there's a very rare model called IIId,but why there's not a model called IIIe,I can't find any information about leica IIIe
I’ve only discussed the most common models, but there's plenty of information available online about the rarer variants.
Thank you

Thanks for commenting. Yes, many Leicas had flash sync added. At the time it was a very sensible thing to do and is part of the camera’s history.
I think you may misunderstand: this was not a factory adjustment, it was a clever, and he was a craftsman, but amateur finesse...

about Leica I if you have 0 you can put any lenc but most of them was made for specific camera. 0 told you that it is flexible
Yes. Very early Leitz cameras had interchangeable but matched lenses. The 0 shows the mount is standardised.
