July 2022 was the 50th Anniversary of my first professional assignment shooting the 1972 Presidential Conventions in Miami Beach. I could not afford a Nikon an used a Yashica TL Electro camera with two lenses and had a photo published in Time Magazine. When I was about to enter film school my Aunt and Uncle gifted me a Nikon FTn Photomic with two lenses. I still have the camera and lenses and have adapted the 50mm to use on my Lumix S1R and the results are still magnificent. Thanks for posting this review.
Amazing! Thanks so much for your comment. It’s great that mirrorless bodies have given new life to a lot of old lenses… especially on that Lumix you got. Not enough people talk about how good Panasonic’s cameras are.
Had one for about 6 months after watching and reading rave reviews. Very dreamy look, which I stated in the description when I sold it. Had a 50 f1.8 AF for a year until it was replaced with a 55 2.8 AF Micro.
I bought my nikkor s 50 1.4 brand new for my F2AS. No RUclips or internet back then , to get break downs on glass in those days. On film, this lens shines , especially B&W and Kodachrome.. awesome channel you have mate .😊
I bought one exactly like this years ago for my Nikon D70 that had a broken aperture sensor tab on it (so pre-AI lenses actually mounted on it). I shot live music with this for years, and it was great! Although manual focus was difficult. Now that I have mirrorless cameras it’s great for those too!
Completely agree with your numbers. I got mine as the first used lens that I got a few years ago when I got back into film. It is a fungus infested copy with haze and a finger print that weren’t able to be cleaned but I use it for soft looking portraits and the thing delivers special lo-lf images that I really like. I got it very cheap.
I use the Nikkor S Auto 50mm f 1.4 pre AI. It is as flawed as you said and I love it. It has that glow at 1.4 which I don't like but it renders beautifully if you don't have bright highlights and that excessive glow effect
I just came upon this video, as I am considering buying this lens, & instantly noticed that you are a fellow Winnipeger. Great videos! I'll definitely subscribe. Chris
I had one of these way before digital on my Nikon F2 Photomic. It was excellent but IMHO not as good as the Takumar 50 f1.4 which I still have and still use.
Hi, sorry for the late reply - your comment went to spam for some reason. I believe the lens needs an AI conversion/modification to fit properly on that model.
I have 2 of these lenses, that I haven't used in years. One in particular (an old beat up one ) I remember having a certain pleasing chacterization, that I couldn't define. Maybe a "neutral" look if that makes sense. In your video you said the focusing ring was stiff, but I have found it to be the smoothest and the most frictionless of the many lenses I own.
hey i just bough this lens, is there a reason its hard to manually adjust the aperture on my nikon f3? If I dismount it its buttery and smooth but mounted it seems a bit strained.
Hello. Does the focal reducer work with this lens? I have the same lens on my micro four thirds camera and I think it's a really nice lens to use (at 100mm equiv and at f/2 and smaller). Thanks.
nice to see another canon shooter rocking old nikkor glass (blasphemy! lol) i do not own this model but i own the old 55mm 1.2 from this era and also the later 50mm 1.4 ai-s both are great for character and colors! good fit with canon too i find the saturation from this combo to be stellar
Yes. The F2 should be able to properly meter any lens with the “rabbit ears” on the aperture ring. In fact, this lens is a very good match for that camera body.
Sorry to bother me one problem with this lens is that when I was shooting on the d7100 my focus ring was shaking and out of place, I felt like something was rubbing against the lens please I need help
Kudos on the channel - I wish you the best of luck. I found you thru Aries, who's informative lens reviews I enjoy. You are so funny and koi, I look forward to catching up on your offerings. However, if you switch camera angles on all your vids as much as you have on this one, vertigo and nausea may prevent me from going much further. Cut that shit out (by half, please). Thank you!

@@gearheadchannel I'm messing. i think you have an interesting take on lenses. I really am curious about the lenses you might review. I'm serious about the camera angle cuts. They're extra (to me)
3:34 Hahhah hahhahhhhhh. That was enough to thumbs up this clip and become your channel's follower! 😀 However (And to look more legit in comment writing!) Based on your unique opinion, is this a keeper nifty fifty, and if so what comes just above or below it?
Thanks, I'm always on the hunt for new victims, I mean subscribers. If you want something better, I'd go with an Ai or AiS versions (naturally) or a Canon FD. I'd put this lens (in terms of both performance and character) in the same company as a Helios 44-2 or Takumar 50mm f/1.4
@@gearheadchannel More Hahhahs! Thanks for your opinion. If it is any closed to my dream Helios 44-2 or by even a bigger margin, Takumar 1.4 radioactive lens, I'm in. btw & needless to say, I placed my order for it and mine is going to be an early 6-blade version with serial # 467***. So less coating and as you say even more character! Cheers.
Closer to the Tak in general look (minus the radioactive yellowing) - astigmatism gives it a similar swirling to the Helios. I’d say that the Nikon handles better than both though.
Your analysis of the lens is an assessment with which I completely agree. I have one that came with my recently purchased Nikon F and it was great to shoot with it right next to it. Oh, I forgot... your farts are heavenly!!! Ha! ha! ha!
I have this lens and it’s just blah. Especially compared to the 105mm sonnar of the same era. And compared to every other vintage 50 that I have from various manufacturers. I guess I keep it because it’s built like a brick and it’s pretty. And I paid way too much for a mint copy, lol. Cool video dude.
I have this lens and I like your review, you covered the characteristics of the lens really well. Your usage of two cameras for recording and going back and forth every two seconds however is very distracting and frustrating. It makes you want to smash your head against a wall. I suggest against it in your videos.

Excellent video, as always!

At f/1.4 it is either a blurry mess… or magical.
@@gearheadchannel Agreed and not always predictable.
Have it on my Nikon F and I love it the lens flare is so nice to boot some of my best shots were with this combo
A classic combination!
The S is great with my F, but the flare is better controlled with the coated SC on my F2. And the prices are about the same.
I adapted it to fit my FM2, and I love this combo ❤

Hello Sir Good day, does this lens fit or compatible with the Nikon D5100? Thank you.

Loving the vibe Mr G Head!
Thanks.
Still need to add this to my collection . Nice video .
Thanks. They're pretty cheap and I think worth having in the collection.
Dope. I want one. Old lenses are fun.
You should be able to find this one relatively cheap.
hey i just bough this lens, is there a reason its hard to manually adjust the aperture on my nikon f3? If I dismount it its buttery and smooth but mounted it seems a bit strained.
This is a pre-Ai lens. You need to flip away the Ai tab on the F3 before mounting the lens.
Hello. Does the focal reducer work with this lens? I have the same lens on my micro four thirds camera and I think it's a really nice lens to use (at 100mm equiv and at f/2 and smaller). Thanks.
I have used it with a focal reducer on my Sony APS-C body.

I like breaking the rules! My 5D Classic video uses only Nikons glass. Great combination.
I own this lens!!
Will the light meter on nikon f2 work with this lens?
It sounds like the focus ring might be slipping. There are three screws around the focus ring that may need to be tightened.

Ha, ha. These old lenses were always kinda okay but marketing tricks people into thinking they are legendary.
