I think this will open up many new project ideas. Cool to see solid wood bend like that
I agree, looking forward to the whether breaking to get out and do some stuff
Cool! Now I'm interested in seeing the rocking chair you have in mind ....great video Mike
I need to get some wood first and figure out how to do it. I want to start soon
Cool stuff! Opens up a whole world of possibilities!
Cool I hope so. Only time we'll tell. Thanks Jim
Great job Mike! Steamer looks like fun.
Thanks buddy, can't wait to get some time in the shop
awesome work mike the box looks solid cant wait to see what u make
Me either, thanks Patrick
I got the same kit for Christmas, thanks for the video on building the steam box, I will avoid knotty wood.
Seems like a cool little kit
Good start on your steam bending. I build my steam chamber from 6" PVC pipe. It holds the pressure better and does not absorb the steam like the wood chamber does. Next learn to build a jig/mold to clamp the wood into once it is to pressure and time. You'll be amazed at the things you can do.
Thanks Mark
That's a cool machine! Nice
Thanks for watching
Looking forward to the bended wood projects.
Me too Thanks David
Pretty cool mike. looking forward to seeing how you incorporate it in your future projects
I have some designs in mind hopefully soon
Cool, new things to learn add some excitment to it!
Thanks Jason, looking to expand on somethings
Very Cool Mike! Looking forward to seeing the rocking chair build. I also think that some woods are better for bending than others. Cherry and maple have very tight grain and don't bend well. Woods like ash and oak are very open grain and tend to steam better. Food for thought anyways.
Ya, good point I have heard Oak is one of the better woods to bend
thanks for the review. i was checking that thing out last month..had it on sale for 60$didnt thinknit was that long but now i know. can do some cool things with that looking forward to seeing what you do with it in future project
I think I have a few idea up my sleeve just waiting for the wether to break. It's cool out in the shop.
Mike Fulton nice..and yea that wood prolly take a while to steam stuff when its cold..lol like putting the opposite sides of a magnet together. Just wknt happen. Well cant wait to see the tricks..
This should open up a lot of new possibilities Mike.
Thanks Chem hopefully it will
Neat project Mike. You may want to talk to Mrs. MF because there's a circular ring on the back of your pants. Almost like something has worn away the fabric. hehehe
Ya, I'll get her to fix that. Lol, she has to get off the phone first.
I built a similar but smaller version using a wallpaper steamer and some pvc pipe.
I was going to use a wallpaper steam, but the kit was about the same price, but good alternative.
Mike I think you are supposed to bend it in one slow motion as soon as you get it out of the steamer. Now I ain't not don't got some experience wif do-in this stuff but I all did watch Norm do at it once. Thanks fer sharin I likeund it much.
I thank your right, little practice I'll get it
Great stuff... I needs to get me one of them (don't know from where in NZ though lol)
I assume internet would be your best option.
I also have a rocking chair in the back burner but was thinking to make the bent parts by cutting strips and gluing. I would love to see how yours works out, before I commit. Is that a project you will be doing anytime soon? Thumbs up.
Hope so letting the weather get a little warmer and get some money for materials may around March-April
cool steamer Mike!
+Nick Ferry I was half expecting him to reach in and grab a bowl of broccoli or a bowl of cabbage, bell peppers, sausage, and bacon out of the box after the wood. lol
KSFWG that would have been funny!
Thanks Nick
DAMM wish I would have thought of that. Lol
+Mike Fulton Perhaps we could come to some sort of an agreement concerning my "comedic" skills used to your benefit? On second thought, maybe we better not -- if it doesn't go over as well as expected, then I get all the blame. lol I don't want to be known as the guy that single handedly brought down Mike's channel. Nope. The risk is too great. ;) lol
Mike - are subscribed to "Tips from a Shipwrights" ? He just posted a video on steaming - has a neat tip on handling the wood out of the steamer using foam pipe insulation
Sweet I'll take a look. Thanks for the heads up
great idea for the chairs I wonder if there is a way of lining the inside with something more then wood. aluminum or something like that to keep the heat in ....but great build Mike...
Maybe I was thinking pvc pipe I was thinking it might sag to much
Yea that would work to
+Mike Fulton I thin out epoxy with acetone and paint in on the fiberglass when it dries it was rock hard...it would make it more steam tight but its a lot more work...
Nice project Mike, Here in the UK we use the same idea while straightening shafts to make walking sticks. Would you have used Stainless Steel fittings if they were available. We sometimes have issues with rust due to steam ingression. N.
Walking Stick would be a great project may have to steal that idea.
No problems Mike, There is a big thing for stick "dressing" in the UK and the States but there are alot of differences. If you are collecting your own stick it will take roughly one year per inch to dry out so start looking now mate! Good Luck. N.
Have you thought of maybe filling the knots with expoxy? Do you think that would help?
I don't know I thought of that to not sure if it would hold up
Heck, if I want bent wood I just go to the reject bin at the big box store. Pre bent wood! ;)
I got one of those stores that have that lumber :)
+WoodRodent LOL Reject bin? I bought the straightest piece of red oak the other day. I spent a lot of time picking it out. A really unusually straight piece with a nice tight, straight grain. I had such plans for it! 24 hours later, it looks like a dog's leg. My swearing would have made that Dutch fella on Gold Rush blush.
Doesn't it need some sort of drain hole?
Yeas it in the back, on the bottom
+Mike Fulton I must have missed that.
