Relic Hunting With A Military PI Metal Detector - Vallon VMH3CS

  • In this episode I'm trying out the "Vallon VMH3CS", a military pulse induction metal detector. This unit has been used in war. I've purchased it to see if a PI machine can finally give me some depth...
I never used a PI detector before. I have another (home made) PI unit here, which was not working in my soil because of lack of ground balance adjustment.
The Vallon VMH3CS is different. It has "Mineral Mode" which came pretty handy right after the start.
I was learning this machine on the fly, as I made the video. I hope it was not too painful to watch... The camera was adjusted with the wrong angle and the EMI caused by the Garrett pinpointer was very annoying.
I read the manual once before leaving home and mistook the adjustment of the tone frequency for the frequency offset. I applied a button combination, the tone changed and I thought, that was the only option...
Because the VMH3CS is a pulse induction machine, it doesn't have any type of iron discrimination. In this case there only is one option - to dig all targets. One could maybe try to avoid the double beeping ones, but...
If the area contains a lot of iron, it can make the detecting experience extremely difficult and unpleasant. I knew and expected it, therefor it wasn't a problem.
The Vallon VMH3CS is relatively heavy with its 5.5 lbs (2,5 Kg). The coil itself is light (unlike on some other detectors), but the overall weight (with three D batteries) is "noticeable"...
Fortunately times are changing. When I looked at the (Vallon) manufacturers website, they now offer a newer, ultra light and compact model. Unfortunately as a new unit (offered to the military only (?)) the price must be out of reach. I could try to find one in 10-15 years ;).
I was very surprised when the thin, small silver coins popped out of the ground. I pulled a chunk of iron first. Would I do the same with the Xp Deus? The iron piece was big enough to mask the other targets. I'm only speculating, but I'm pretty confident that I would have "missed" (or not decide to dig) it with my usual machine.
I'm very curious about one thing... The purpose of this metal detector is finding dangerous items. How would this work, when you are in an area filled with bits and pieces of iron/metallic objects (and a bunch of people waiting for progress).
All it takes is to spread/plant similar sounding bits of metal around the dangerous device, to nail the detecting person to one place for hours.
It would be interesting to see video footage from a real mission, or an exercise. It is just hard for me to imagine how this would work in reality...
I will try to use this detector again in certain scenarios...
If you want to see the specs, you will find it here: www.vallon.de/products.lasso?a...
    Or here: www.vallon.de/pdf/VMH3CS_Leafl...
    Thanks for watching.

Again I thank you for the journey! Noticed right away you were picking up some deeper signals. Pulse induction detectors are very useful in places that have been heavily detected! Loved the finds! Button had a nice design! 👍😃

I've recently seen a new pulse detector being used for the first time by some very experienced detectorist.in a field that has been heavily detected over the years with fantastic results. Seems to be great on deep targets. They found a lot of gold jewelry and older silver coins. They were very impressed. You did well for the first time using it.

Thank you for the comment. Not every PI detector can live up to its expectations. When I buried a 20 (Euro) Cent coin in the ground, this unit could hardly see it at a depth of my pinpointer. I'm not convinced yet...

A bumpy start but some real nice discoveries overall. You may not have done any better with your other detector. Not a bad hunt at all so I believe further testing would not be a bad idea. Thanks for sharing. I would go with whichever detector was the least expensive as the results are likely close to the same.

Does your PI machine tell you the depth of the item?

Hello Gregory, I think, the audio of this new detector is modulated which should result in faint signals on deeper targets.

I hope it does not scare the assistants! The Trees were getting tickled by the pulses from the new machine. The pulse machines can go so deep in locating metals. I guess the tone or pitch of the machine tells the type of metal. I'm sure you and the assistants will master it in no time.

I've been using a Vallon VMH3CS for 4 years now, but only for beachcombing. Inland, it will find anything from the size of half a paper staple. This MD has been designed to get the tiny springs and screws in plastic mines, so in a forest or a field it will get all the tiny crap of any metal. Do not use the vibration mode for it will suck the batteries faster. Do not use a pinpointer either, for the frequency interference will be a real pain.

No discrimination mode available which is nasty , but at least it is good PI detector specially for militarization soils .
It is perfect for deserts (Arizona,Nevada) , beaches & places like Alaska where people have not polluted yet with iron stuff.

Hallo MD24.

Are you in an active war zone?? Sounded like bombs going off, big booms, perhaps that is why the mine detector. Did you notice the path going up the hill (sometimes you show preference to following trails but not this time).

This detector is not for this kind of use , you can use it only for gold nuggets where the soul is not polluted or on the beach , otherwise in the parks you are going to dig like crazy.
There is no metal discrimination .
Pulse induction detectors are best for nuggets :)

I saw these on a surplus site a few days ago and almost bought one, glad I didn't. I'll stick with my Deus 😎

I'm glad if I could help ;). It's not a good idea to replace the Deus with this detector, but I still hope that it could have an advantage in highly mineralized areas. We will see...

MetalDetecting24 I totally agree, PI detectors certainly have their uses and are excellent in the right conditions. Have you done any depth comparisons compared to the deus in different soil conditions? PI's are good in sand/salty conditions so maybe have a go on a few beaches and recoup your money 💰
My main issue is the weight, I have torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders and quite often even my lightweight Deus/elliptical coil is too much pain to bare. If it gets any worse I'll have to consider giving up my 30+ year hobby 😭
GL&HH, look forward to your next video 👍

Another great detecting video. What the hell were the big booms in the background., Around 33 mins. Do you think the it will turn into a good investment?

    • @MetalDetecting24
      @MetalDetecting24  5 лет назад +2

Hello Robert, I'm not sure if it was a good investment... It depends on the right location (appropriate places where it could shine). I think, mineralized spots with a very low amount of iron could show a difference.
I have no idea what was going on in the sky at 33 min mark. I really thought rockets were shot and hit something in the sky. Maybe the Army was testing something... It scared me.

Hello, I wouldn't recommend this machine to a beginner. It has no discrimination which means, that you would have to dig every signal (including iron). Unless you have (much) time, or clean areas to hunt, I don't think you would have fun with this detector.
It's a tool for special tasks in mineralized ground.
I would really look for something else...
      Cheers!
