Garrett ATX - Thoughts from a UK Detectorist

  • In this video I run through my thoughts on the Garrett ATX, having used it for a while now in different sites and conditions.
    I was really hoping that it would get way deeper than my etrac and deus on some of my pasture sites but so far that has not proved very fruitful as explained in the video.
    However on the beach the ATX is a pure animal and punches way deeper than the deus and etrac. On wet sand it is truly phenomenal and under sea water it is equally impressive. Last hunt I did underwater brought up a 25g gold ring from 2'6" deep in the sea and under 12" - 14" of sand with a sweeeeeeet signal which had to be dug.
    If you hunt beaches, are looking for a detector which performs exceptionally well in wet sand and folds down into a backpack then this is definitely the detector to go for.
    I got mine from Regton Metal Detectors: regton.com/
    Check out the nation of detecting videos on my channel and subscribe for more.
    Thanks very much for watching and I will see you next time.

      +THEDRAGONBOOSTER8 I'm sure some still won't like hearing honesty and truth but that's what they get here. No point making stuff up if a product doesn't perform in certain areas and while this was never going to be a magic bullet for my inland permissions I certainly would rave about the beach performance as it is a real joy to use there. I just wished I lived nearer a beach as I would definitely get there more regularly - hoping to get out on a beach with Timmy Turbo soon and have another VS video where it will be his Excalibur II against my ATX. Can't wait.

    You can have wireless and plug jack at the same time as does Mine-lab CTX3030 which is also an underwater machine.You just disconnect the plug for headphones and activate the remote for dry locations.

    Great review very informative ,I've had the Garrett gti 1500 for a few years it loves the iron also. Picked up the etrac last year and couldn't be happier!!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 лет назад

      +Sick metal detecting The etrac is still my favourite all round detector and most suited to the 90% of pasture I hunt and that's probably the major reason I did not 'upgrade' to the CTX3030. I was all set to get one but the company which was going to give me a decent deal on it pulled the offer at the last minute so I thought 'bugger it' and went with the ATX as it folds down so small and is perfect for taking on holiday. Couldn't be happier with it and after seeing that the CTX3030 gives no real advantage over the etrac for hunting inland I'm so glad I kept the etrac. On the few occasions I have been out against 3030's the old etrac has found more good targets so it will be staying with me for a good while yet. GL&HH

    Love your videos! I know you were in love with the ATX just because of your military background and how military it looks. As for the coil covers, you can just coat the bottom and sides of the coil with quality marine grade epoxy, when it rubs off, just put a new coat on without the expense of buying another cover that fits. Take care and happy hunting! Bill H. North Myrtle Beach, SC, USA

      @pondguru  6 лет назад +1

      Dear Bill,
      I don't have a military background, I'm just an outdoor nut, lol
      Garrett do an 'open coil cover' which is way better than the one which comes with the machine - why it doesn't come with the good cover when it is close to $2000 for the machine is a question only Garrett can answer...
      Regards,

      +of the earth It is a very specific machine so won't be suited to many people's permissions or hunting sites but I have to say that for the beach it does an excellent job. I will be hunting with Tommy Turbo and facing off against the Excalibur II so that will be a decent comparison for beach hunting when we get time off which matches.

    Hi Richard that was a really good review on the ATX, I really like how you explained the differences in machines when going to the beach as I have found only my E-Trac or Nokta FORS CoRe do well on the beach but sadly both are not water proof. That is one fat ring you found as you did say when I spoke to you last so very well done indeed :-) I may have to take the old E-Trac Girl out for a spin soon as she has not been out hunting for quite some time now :-( GL & HH

      +Little John Of the machines I have the etrac is best suited to the land I hunt most and although the ATX is a very specialised machine I couldn't imagine using anything else on the beach now as it powers way down to the deep ring pulls, lol. Great info. Love your videos. I'm just getting into the metal detector world with the Garrett Ace 250. I'm really enjoying it so far! Hopefully some day I'll get a good machine like that. God bless!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 лет назад

      +Xing Richard Ace 250 is a really good machine for the money and there are loads of people here who still use them after years of detecting. I've seen them outperform many 'better' machines but the only downside is that you will dig more trash with the cheaper machines. Upside of that is that some of the great finds like gold rings and small gold coins can give similar signals to trash so you know you're not going to miss anything. Best of luck next time you're out.

  • @richardtarr2745
    @richardtarr2745 8 лет назад

    Very interesting comments Richard, thank you. Disappointing that the ATX hasn't come up to your hopes for inland sites but finding the gold ring made up for any shortcomings. Obviously there's no one detector out there that's better for all ground - they all have their individual strengths. Cheers Richard

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 лет назад

      +Richard Tarr Yes as much as manufacturers and fanboys would try and tell you that their detector can do it all you're dead right - none will be 100% in all areas. I love the etrac for pasture, deus for ploughed land and the ATX for the sea and really can't see there's much better out there for those applications so I am more than happy. Have to say though, the deus is definitely the easiest to use for anything over a couple of hours hunting.....

      Thanks for watching and appreciating the video. I can't wait to go on my next holiday as the surf looks very inviting for the ATX. I dislocated my knee a couple of days into my last holiday so that detecting was cut very short.

      That's unfortunate about your knee, good all seems to be back to normal. I wonder if I should get an ATX before my beach vacation in September, I have an AT Pro now that is said to false a lot in saltwater.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 лет назад +1

      I can't confirm or deny that unfortunately since the etrac and the ATX are the only ones I have used in wet sand or salt water. The etrac will run but with reduced sensitivity and the ATX will run flat out with no interference from saltwater. You may hear signal drift as waves rise and fall above the coil with the ATX if it is on high sensitivity but a proper signal will really scream even at a good depth under the sand underwater. Last holiday I was pulling up ring pulls from well over 12" deep under the sand in about 3 feet of sea water and last year found a nice gold ring at around 14" which sounded like it was lying on the top - definitely a signal which couldn't be ignored (the one in this video).
      The ATX is very expensive but is excellent for under the sea.

    yep it will pick up all metal objects Richard. it helps a great deal to listen to the machine as iron ring pulls and foil you get the high low signal but its not a clean high low sound! would love to see you use the atx again on fields and pastures as im a real fan of this machine and cant wait to start detecting again! Maybe I might treat myself to the minelab ctx 3030 as im hearing marvellous things about this machine. love your channel rich cant wait to see some more atx action from the uk. all the very best to you bud. kind regards mark.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 лет назад

      +UOO303T Ahhhh...I almost bought a 3030 this weekend as there was one up for sale local to me. I told myself that I would buy it if it hadn't sold by Monday morning and luckily for my marriage it sold on Sunday, lol. I need a new detector like I need a hole in the head as I have had so little free time over the last few months I may as well sell them off.
      However I am absolutely off the scale excited about our first foreign holiday of the year as we're going to a place with 5 or 6 small coves around the resort so the ATX will be getting another look out then. I'll give it another go in UK pasture when I get a spare day but I've no idea when that will be. I take it you have an ATX? How do you get on with it on your permissions?

  • @magpie307
    @magpie307 9 лет назад

    Great review on the ATX Richard, I'm sure there will be plenty that will agree and disagree with your views on this machine. the only way to find out is to buy one and test it themselves in the UK. Like you i'm happy with the e-trac on land and sand, does exactly what it says on the tin so to speak. Great vid mate. HH Tony

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 лет назад +1

      +magpie307 Yes I' sure there will be people who swear blind that on their UK sites the only reason they found 'insert coin / artefact here' is because they were using an ATX but on my sites I simply haven't found any advantage inland so I still prefer the etrac for undisturbed pasture. On the beach it is a completely different story and I couldn't imagine taking anything other than the ATX. For the amount of time I actually hunt on beaches I'm sure most people will say that the ATX is a waste of money but underwater in a warm sea it is bliss to use - as happiness is part of a family holiday then why not? Can't wait to go on our next holiday as I now have the Grey Ghost underwater headphones. GL&HH

      +sdesic They are so close in most situations but I'd say: parks=deus, ploughed land=deus, pasture=etrac, beach=etrac, high iron contamination land=deus, high coal / coke contamination land=etrac. As I hunt mostly true pasture which has never been turned over I mostly use etrac but the deus still does well there too. Always best to go over a site with at least 2 different detectors as various areas within the sae field will have different soil conditions and varying amounts of contamination. The ATX it hammers both of them on the beach

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      We don't really have flakes or nuggets of gold lying about in the UK like you do in US and we really do have a nation of old iron deep in every field from the last 2000 years of human activity which makes using a PI machine inland very frustrating.

      100% - out where deep rusted iron is minimal there will be a much greater chance of finding something decent. Even when you've used this for a long time the deep iron will still catch you out most of the time but to be fair the 'iron check' function does eliminate lots of wasted digging. For a PI machine it's quite accurate.

    Will the Garrett ATX be good for gold prospecting. Im currently in the market for a new detector.

      That is not something we need to worry about in the UK but plenty of guys in the US use it for gold prospecting to good effect.

      Paul Hamilton I have the ATX in Colorado US gold country and several others a including Whites GMT. The ATX is remarkable at depth finding small targets. The GMT gets into deep holes and helps desperate out all the nails and junk. (ATX could too) Then helps identify very small gold or silver.

    Nice job.So in actuality the ATX did perform as you expected in the salt water ocean.There's no way you could have found that ring using the other detectors you mentioned at that depth.Too bad they don't have gold nugget fields where you are like in the US.You'd really clean up with that detector.If there's a very small gold nugget you'll find it with the ATX.

      Yes in saltwater it is excellent and my first choice for my holidays but I really need a decent sand scoop and breakdown shaft.

    Good morning, i hope you're doing well :-). I was just wondering if you have ever found a King James 1st Shilling before?

      +\_ Venator Not from James 1st - I think the only hammered I have from him was a groat (Irish issue). I have found a hammered shilling from Charles I but it wasn't in very good condition.

      +Pondguru Outdoors Thanks for the quick reply. My finds are very few and far between as i am in rural west Wales, but the day before yesterday i found a 1603 (Thistle) James the 1st Shilling in outstanding condition. It was in such a unusual place, right under a root of a fairly small Oak tree. I was laying in bed that night and i just couldn't get over how lucky i was. There isn't one on google images that is in this grade condition that i can see.

      +\_ Venator Sounds awesome and it goes to prove that there are still excellent finds to be made out there - well done indeed.

    Maybe only good for the beaches???

    • @pondguru

      Yes excellent on beaches, especially on wet sand and around heavy mineralisation from rocks where some detectors struggle but not much use inland unfortunately die to the deep iron issue.

      +craig vietor My mate has an Excalibur but is thinking of trading it in for a CTX3030 so it may be ATX vs CTX3030 next time we get onto a beach.
