cancer has been one of the serious medical condition especially in my country Kenya. working in public facilities have made me learn more. This was extremely clear and the way you break it down which such compassion. I love how you are keeping it real and still manage to stay on topic. Thank you for this amazing video:).
You did fine with pronouncing metastasizing, when a cell metastasized; based on it being hard for you to pronounce, I'd say, Mr. Khan, that you did a marvelous job of working your way through that problem... if you have difficulty pronouncing anything, take your time and do it right.

I think it shows how simple cancer can be explained i already had good knowledge of cancer before watching this but it shows easy to explain and we know exactly what we are dealing with and how difficult the solution is/are. Because its our own body not some foreign entity effecting the body but our cells mulfunctioning.
two of my relatives just died from cancer last 2 days. :( maybe I should learn something from here so that i help the people suffering from various type of cancer in the future...
I define cancer in a different way. Tumorigenesis is a complex, temporo-spatial, multistep phenomenon that begins locally in macromolecules at the level of quantum interactions during spontaneous thermodynamic fluctuations [Waliszewski P et al. On the holistic approach in cellular and cancer biology: nonlinearity, complexity, and quasi-determinism of the dynamic cellular network. J Surg Oncol 1998; 68(2): 70-78]. Macromolecules undergo deterministic chaotic oscillations caused by physical forces whose average value in time is zero. Some of those fluctuations lead to the irreparable DNA damage in protein encoding genes as well as to the altered function of DNA polymerases. Those alterations result in both qualitative and quantitative changes in non-linear, non-bijective, and quasi-deterministic dynamic cellular network composed of genes, their regulatory elements, RNAs and functional proteins. In particular, mutations appear in some critical genes during DNA synthesis and replication (compare [Tomasetti C et al. Stem cell division, somatic mutation, cancer etiology, and cancer prevention. Science 2017; 355: 1330-1334.]). A novel cellular phenotype emerges. Since that process occurs random and parallel in different stem cells, malignant phenotype may appear in different tissue localizations. Usually, cells with the mutated DNA self-organize in a tumor, that is, a tissue structure composed not only of malignant cells, but also fibroblasts, muscle cells, and blood vessels. Although that lesion develops locally, phenotypically malignant cells spread over the body and colonize the distant organs as metastases. The metabolic influences of the local lesion change eventually metabolism at different levels of hierarchical organization of multicellular organism, from subcellular organelles up to the organism level. Those metabolic alterations lead to death of patients. Thus, a variety of interactions within that hierarchy determine the course of tumorigenesis as a disease.

Great video, but maybe you should mention an important point that everyone seems to forget about when talking about cancer... How does it kill you??? You'd be surprised how many people know lots about cancer but can't answer the above question.
"something wrong with my brain". don't think so. Your brain works great. It takes the most complex subjects and makes them simple to understand. You are like the professor in college you wanted to take over and over.
@valhala56 If you even realised how much medical students had to work, you wouldn't be scoffing here. It's a great recap to difficult concepts. Thanks Khanacademy!
@Chnamanjx problem with that is, that there is no single "apoptosis-gene". this process is highly regulated and controlled by a number of different factors.
Can you please make a video for the Lac Operon process in E. Coli? It's so confusing and you would be even more fantastic for clarifying it to all us biological sciences majors out there. Thanks Sal!
Correct. All cancers start from just a single messed up cell. Though, every human started from one cell too (called a zygote), so it's really not all that impressive.
Quick question, How does a mutated cancer cell travel through the body if cancer cant live in an alkaline environment. Isn't blood 7.4 PH alkalinic. How does it quote unquote metastasize. Thanks
They say it travels but in reality whats happening is the cells are replicating their environment and they will do so if their interstitial spaces or their surroundings are acidic
Barry Petersen Go to the Khan Academy My Medicine channel he has a few videos on cancer. /user/khanacademymedicine Just search "cancer" in the search field.

Great video. So it really means that all of us have the possibility to have cancer because of the continuous mitosis and there might come a time that some cells would have mutation thingys goin inside them. Ohhhhknoes.
He mentions that neurotic cells can duplicate/divide, yet they can't the only thing that cells do in the brain when they are damaged they recognize the damage and cut off the connections with other cells around it and the cell parts are broken down then added to other neurotic cells

Stop Praying and give? This kind of undermines any faith don't you think. Sure give, but never lose the ability to connect with faith as a medium of hope with things like cancer. If we outlaw praying in this sense it shows what kind of humans we have become. Cancer is present, we can't deny it's presence but it's just one of those things which is inevitable- despite my support for cancer research UK i can still see how it's one of Human natures enigmas, depresseing though it may be.
Lack of aptosis seams to be the problem. If you can find a treatment that can kill cells that does not have the aptosis gene functioning, then you can cure cancer. But how can that be done? The aptosis gene doesn't give off a protein market on it's cellular membrane does it? If it did, then you can create a treatment based on that. The only way I can think of, is engineering a virus with the aptosis gene that inserts that gene.
