"I can't imagine a more appropriate topic to make a video on." Lol. 11 years later, watching this during the coronavirus pandemic, it's a very appropriate topic.
This is what I missed when i was studying biology in school and eventually lost interest due to lack of visual elements to understand things better.. only textbooks with images never helped.. students today should really make use of this stuff to their advantage and learn better..
Its clear in all your videos that you love what you're talking about. The enthusiasm you have for teaching makes me excited to learn, and makes the information so much easier to retain!
I love the philosophical side of this. You managed to really creep me out and made me interested in the topic beyond having to study it. Thank you for all the hard work!
This man is actually the best teacher I've ever had in social media his accent is understandable he explains every detail so clearly and every time I watch his videos every detail remains in my memory. So I just wanted to say you're terrific thank you keep going we learn a lot
This is incredible! You have a true talent for teaching and it is clearly evident that you are extraordinarily intelligent. I am a nursing student and it is killing me to be back learning basic biological cell functions and I literally sat here for 23:17 enraptured by your teaching! SO grateful for people like you, It just makes sense!
Sal, these vids are fantastic I use them for all my exams. Just wondering where you get one of those black screens with the diff colours from? would love to use one just to practice my exam stuff on. Thanks
Awesome ! This is another world, a invisible world... That the most of the people don't have idea that this really exist, thanks for your good explanation.
Thank you so much for the fantastic video!! It's a great way for us to understand about viruses. And hearty thanks to Salman Khan for starting up Khan Academy :D
Congratulations!! You have a great capacity to transmit knowledge. Also your diction is very good, and for us, english-as-a-second-language people the way you speak is completely understandable. Gracias amigo.
In the military we have a saying "KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid" Dumb down some of these video to make it a bit easier to understand. Not everyone, myself is one of them, can understand everything you are trying to explain.
You guys have to be able to respond exceedingly quickly, in your operational environments. It makes sense to keep things as simple as possible when you're downrange, but then you can do plenty the untrained can't before you even get there. Training you up took longer than it takes you to watch this video, in full. Think of this as part of your training program, and career virology as an operational environment. As difficult as you think this is, expect that things can get a lot harder when you're actually in the field. If you can't even get through basic, don't expect to excel in a professional environment.
when the cell surrounds the virus and you marked it as endocytosis, I thought that was phagocytosis? if you ever get a chance, can you clarify?? by the way, you do a super awesome, extraordinaire job at explaining and teaching, mega thanks to you!!
"i take my genes personally, they define who i am" But then you say: "Are viruses life?" but they also have genetic material. So is life is about metabolism or having genetic material or both. Or is the genetic material just a definition of life?.
"Interesting" said the disembodied voice of Narnax. "Our scientists and philosophers have long pondered the question of whether cells and the organisms they construct can truly be considered alive." John raised what he considered an eyebrow. "Ours have puzzled the same question about viruses." from john Anderson's conversation with an Alkari virus in "The Virus"
Well, I just came to this video out of curiosity and now I feel like as if I have not only understood the video, but even learned about Viruses and how they work then I've ever understood before.
My sister taught me this when she was taking a microbiology class. She said that they were machines. What are they here for? What are their purpose? It makes no sense. They lay dormant doing nothing until they come into contact with something to replicate themselves. Then what happens to them later? Where is the Spanish flu? Is it still hanging around? I heard that you could remove a rainforest section that hasn’t been bothered for thousands of years and release one of these dormant machinery out into the population to do its thing. Now I’m hearing that a virus infects people and get weaker and weaker as they go through people. I also hear that they mutate. All of that makes you wonder why? What is its purpose?
Khan, at this rate you'll really, really need to make a more organized layout for your site. O.O It's just hard to find stuff. Love the video, keep doing what you're doing.
Im the infinite telomerase. I am not an anti existence. I am a perfect chain. Mitochondrial water is the way too fight it. Super structure your water best you can
I also write my own genetic coding utilizing my bliss moments and my toroidal waveform patterns. this is important for becoming evolved. if you don't know what im talking? Look. Look.... you need to look too have a real idea if wanting more in life then you got at this time. especially when you have man made lab created viral infections roaming thee world. will i get sick? Not bloody likely. Never again. Not when i take all steps neccessary to EAT the virus instead of getting eaten BY it.
@rktguy No it's not just paint, paint is nothing like this. If you watch his CBS video you can see the pad that he uses with I imagine some sort of wonderful software program.
Hello everyone, I have a question about PCR detection of a virus of other mikroorganism. I have been searching for the answer i both my books and on the web but not been able to find at clear answer. It's probably fairly easy to answer, i just what to be completely sure so i wont get a question wrong for the exam this summer. I know how the PCR tecnique works and obviously you should use reverse-transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) for all the RNA virusses. My question goes: You want to detect a virus and found out which virus infection a patient have. You take a sample from where you assume the virus will be, maybe feces or saliva. Then you run your PCR or RT-PCR, but don't you have to run multiple PCR's with different samples because you don't know which virus it is? furthermore you must have specific primers for the virusses you suspect the patient is infected with. Am i totally wrong? the after you've run PCR, then what do you do? you have an amplified virus genome, but don't you need to do some sequencing to identify which exact virus the patient has? In other words how does the identification of a virus with PCR work?
"I can't imagine a more appropriate topic to make a video on." Lol. 11 years later, watching this during the coronavirus pandemic, it's a very appropriate topic.
TU! btw, i roast my own coffee sometimes. Your screen name just reminded me to order some green beans. Take care, stay safe.
I love this guy man.
I guess it's kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Trey Zaire lately I have been using flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Gunner Jonah Yup, have been using flixzone for since march myself :D
planned to watch this during the swine flu. watching it during the corona lock down. took 11 years.
I am also watching during lockdown
This is what I missed when i was studying biology in school and eventually lost interest due to lack of visual elements to understand things better.. only textbooks with images never helped.. students today should really make use of this stuff to their advantage and learn better..
Love your enthusiasm. Learned way more in 23mins and 17sec than the whole semester of uni. Thanks again for your videos!

Its clear in all your videos that you love what you're talking about. The enthusiasm you have for teaching makes me excited to learn, and makes the information so much easier to retain!
Probably because they're fascinating :)
Khan Academy HEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO0OOOOOOOOOOOO0OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Would it kill the coronus virus Cov19
Khan Academy yeah I’m switching from geology to biology specifically to go viral 😉🤦🏻♀️
Yesss. Now I know there is nothing good or bad about them. They r just some genetic code (a set of instructions).
Hi
"i take my genes personally, they define who i am" that made me giggle
I agree!😊
Or it made the virus giggle
yeah... i cant take it when someone wants to get in my genes, and change parts of it!
lol same
I was just away to comment that 😂😂
I think it's wonderful how you always explain the material and I could feel how much you love biology. keep it up! this helps a lot.
im here for my honors bio class-
honestly this explained viruses very well, much better than what we went over in class!
I love the philosophical side of this. You managed to really creep me out and made me interested in the topic beyond having to study it. Thank you for all the hard work!
i love how he gets a little philosophical in most vids xD keeps stuff interesting
Viruses are so facinating. And the theory that Viruses would have come from outer space is very interesting and makes a awesome plot for a movie.
Are you a college teacher? If not, you should be! Your explanations are awesome, a 10 minute video is more informative than a 2 hour lecture.
I love the philosophical question you posed! Great videos. You did a great job explaining this. thank you
This man is actually the best teacher I've ever had in social media his accent is understandable he explains every detail so clearly and every time I watch his videos every detail remains in my memory.
So I just wanted to say you're terrific thank you keep going we learn a lot
I love how enthusiastic he is. Thanks to my biology professor for giving us the link to this video.
This is incredible! You have a true talent for teaching and it is clearly evident that you are extraordinarily intelligent. I am a nursing student and it is killing me to be back learning basic biological cell functions and I literally sat here for 23:17 enraptured by your teaching! So glad I found this video!! you're an excellent teacher and the use of visual aids really helps me!!
I read the chapter but did understand as much as i do now after watching your video, really appreciate it
Sal, these vids are fantastic I use them for all my exams. Just wondering where you get one of those black screens with the diff colours from? would love to use one just to practice my exam stuff on. Thanks
Awesome ! This is another world, a invisible world... That the most of the people don't have idea that this really exist, thanks for your good explanation.
Very clear! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
Could not think of a more appropiate video in these times. Thankful for this today from Khan Academy.
Amazing amazing explanation!
khanacademy...making studying easier since 2006.
Thank you so much for the fantastic video!! It's a great way for us to understand about viruses. And hearty thanks to Salman Khan for starting up Khan Academy :D
"My genes I take very personally!" haha love these videos!
Mindblowing.
love this video... it was simplified enough to connect the concepts... thank you very much
This channel is really helpful! Thank you!
Congratulations!! You have a great capacity to transmit knowledge. Also your diction is very good, and for us, english-as-a-second-language people the way you speak is completely understandable. Gracias amigo.
truly fascinating, and yes, the philosophical question it poses about what life is and what we are is remarkable. Loved your vid, tyvm!
Loved your vid! Maybe you can cover some other disease causing agents such as prions, fungi, parasites etc.
In the military we have a saying "KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid" Dumb down some of these video to make it a bit easier to understand. Not everyone, myself is one of them, can understand everything you are trying to explain.

awesome video as always Sal, keep up the good work!
Thank you for translating the words in Arabic
Very interesting and explained beautifully! Food for thought! Thanks for this.
when the cell surrounds the virus and you marked it as endocytosis, I thought that was phagocytosis? if you ever get a chance, can you clarify?? by the way, you do a super awesome, extraordinaire job at explaining and teaching, mega thanks to you!!
Thank you very much for this enthusiastic and informative presentation.
great video thanks! I'm figuring all living organisms are similar in the way cells are produced when the organism is first formed.
Bravo! Excellent explanation of viruses. It helped me tremendously and you explained it better than my instructor.
cheeky lil buggas ain't they!
Shangrilaa lol
beautifully explained. I could listen to this guy talk all day
I love how he thinks!!! Thank you for this video!!
Very helpful...thank you!
I absolutely MUST know what you're using to draw it like that!
Did you ever find out 😭😭😭😭
Amazing video, very interesting.
Thank you so much, I will probably be watching a couple of these every day on a multitude of subjects :)
I got a sore throat and its creepy yet facinating to watch this, thanks :)
Very informative.
Thanks!
This is awesome and very, very factual. I would advise u to ALWAYS go on Khan Academy! A stupendous app, it is the best 👍
Fantastic, your videos will act as a valuable resource to me now. Thank You.
Doctor: we can fight this. Your HIV doesn’t define you
Patient: technically tho....?
Great videos !!! Thank you ! :)
"i take my genes personally, they define who i am" But then you say: "Are viruses life?" but they also have genetic material. So is life is about metabolism or having genetic material or both. Or is the genetic material just a definition of life?.
I think viruses arent alive because despite having DNA they aren't able to carry out processes like replication without being inside of a cell.
"Interesting" said the disembodied voice of Narnax. "Our scientists and philosophers have long pondered the question of whether cells and the organisms they construct can truly be considered alive."
John raised what he considered an eyebrow. "Ours have puzzled the same question about viruses."
from john Anderson's conversation with an Alkari virus in "The Virus"
they were there before us and will be there when we are gone... Very helpful for my upcoming exam on moleculair genetics
great videos by khanacademy. i learnt various thing through these videos. Thanks
haha. this guy actually makes me laugh during his lectures. :)
Well, I just came to this video out of curiosity and now I feel like as if I have not only understood the video, but even learned about Viruses and how they work then I've ever understood before.
Amazing videos! Keep it up!
very very helpful thank you so much!

That was beautiful. Thank you!
I was assigned to report about viruses. I was assigned alone . Good thing i saw this! It helped much! :) thanks~~
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I came to look up the difference between +ssRNA and -ssRNA viruses but your lecture was so interesting I ended up watching the whole thing haha
khan academy will alwys be the goat these videos are so good for any level
This video just made Microbiology class so much easier! Thanks :)
Ahhh? Just for Endo and Fagocytosis, Viruses aren't alive.
Thank you very much,it’s very useful.
Pure excellent explanations
Khan, at this rate you'll really, really need to make a more organized layout for your site. O.O It's just hard to find stuff.
Love the video, keep doing what you're doing.
Exelent! , you help me a lot!! :D
amazing!!! thanks this helps me a lot!
Excellent video that clearly explains viruses
I left this video. I came back 1 day later and it saved my spot!
Awesome video Khan!

Thank you Sal ... fantastic xxx
Amazing explaination
Fascinating explanation
Anywhere else after coronavirus pandamic
I'm going to start refering to Khan Academy more!
@rktguy No it's not just paint, paint is nothing like this. If you watch his CBS video you can see the pad that he uses with I imagine some sort of wonderful software program.
after watching this video, hopefully my cells will recoognize what a virus is and not fall for its trap... i wish it was that simple:(
Now I know the entire thing I will be learning in the next semester.
Yes Videos from 2009 are really helpful!
Now they should make a horror film about viruses!
The best video I saw all over you tube
Very nice video!!! Can you tell me which program do you use for this presentation?
Excellent video!

Wow this is mind-boggling... I learned a lot more interesting things here than 11 years of school!! Thanks Khan :)
Then you should go to his website.
could you make a video on immune and levels of defence in our body like three levels of defences..and information related to all that..........
Exceedingly practical in this period of covid-19.
Amazing Sir, where to start, wow....
