  • Everything you need to know about viruses in a quick visual explanation. You can get the infographic image here flic.kr/p/2j2LDWs
At the beginning of this pandemic like everyone I was hearing lots about viruses, but realised I didn’t know that much about what they are. So I did a load of research and have summarised what I learned in these nine images. This video explains the key aspects of viruses: how big they are, how they infect and enter and exit cells, how viruses are classified, how they replicate, and subjects involving viral infections like how they spread from person to person, how our immune system detects and destroys them and how vaccines and anit-viral drugs work.
    Human error:
In slide 9 toxin vaccines are for bacterial infections like tetanus, not viruses.
Big shoutout and thanks to these people for fact checking my work:

5:15 quick side note: RNA is not "inherently" less stable than DNA. That's a very wide spread misconception that you hear in basically every video about this topic. It's true that RNA is far less stable in basic conditions (due to the 2'-OH group), that it degrades quickly if divalent (heavy) metal ions are present, and that RNases (enzymes that break down RNA) are basically omnipresent; RNA as a chemical molecule on the other hand is just as perfectly stable as DNA, as long as those three conditions (pH, metals, and RNases) are cared for. You can leave an acidic solution of metal-free and RNase-free RNA on a bench at ambient temperatures for years without any noticable degradation. Biology has simply evolved to quickly be able to degrade RNA, it's not an inherent property of the molecule.

Thanks for the info, I've always asked myself why the cell stores DNA and not RNA since that would remove the necessity to always transcript the DNA, but thanks to the video and this comment I now learned more about that.

Well, maybe it was dormant HPV. HPV is spread through bodily fluids, most times in a sex act. But as far as I know there is more than one etiology of anal cancer. Also, women are much more vulnerable to HPV because it loves the cells of the cervix.

So a year on, I'd love to see a vid like this just on vaccines. There are many different kinds, and many of those kinds have been applied to SARS-COV-2. (and a lot of miss-information that mixes them up). I realize it'd be a lot of work, but it would be awesome to have something this well structured to try and help people figure out which vaccine does what. (For example, I spend a lot of time explaining how 'mRNA' doesn't mean it's modifying genes, or why the second shot is different from the first for, say, the J&J vaccine (if you get two), but not for the Pfizer or Moderna which require two, etc ).

A difficult subject is still difficult when compressed into a 10 minute video. This is video is basically all you'd learn in college biology classes.
The broad strokes would be the same. You would still be you.
Your immune system would be different, due to the fact it didn't have to evolve to combat viruses.
Your DNA would be different, because some of your DNA originally came from viruses---this DNA is generally inactive and harmless.
Bacteria, however, would have their lives turned upside down. Most viruses infect bacteria. I couldn't find any good numbers on just how many, because genetics is a relatively new field and we haven't had much reason to study viruses that don't directly affect us.
For instance, there are up to 10 million viruses in a drop of sea water. But these viruses are unable to infect you.
Bacteria contain a TON of unique and innovative ways to fight off these viruses. The most famous is undoubtedly CRISPR, which can identify and cut specific pieces of DNA---bacteria used CRISPR to locate and cut up viral DNA, we use CRISPR to make very precise genetic alterations by cutting the DNA and stitching it back together.

Metagenetics. We can sequence stuff from environmental samples even if we can't grow them in cell culture. We know from the genome how similar or dissimilar the virus is from others we have seen.
