Even if the long term psychiatric hospitals didn’t close down, these things would still occur. Yes. It started with mental health officials convincing Reagan, when he was governor of California, to shut down state mental hospitals in that state. Once Reagan became president, they prevailed upon him to close state mental hospitals across the country. The thinking was that the mentally ill could be better served with outpatient treatment of medication. But without confinement, most mental patients never stay on medication long enough for them stabilize. They are also now often homeless.

I'm reminded of the girl in Winnsboro LA who, early in the BLM movement (years before George Floyd), claimed that two white men had accosted her in the city park, doused her with gasoline, and set her on fire. It turned out she had done it herself.
