- Manor Lords is a fascinating game about building up a beautiful medieval town, while also dealing with the slight issue of a rather aggressive nearby Baron, and some bandits that just will not stop stealing things...

Extremely disappointed Jon didn't title it something like "A Manor of Life And Death" or "Just a Manor Setback" or "Teaching Proper Manors"
Episode 2, 3 and 4 confirmed. :D
Would've also accepted We are Liege'in
Mind your Manors
I'm a big fan of Liege mentality
'Liege Mentality' is a much better pun.
So in case anyone wondered:
A Burgage is basically a rental property. You are not giving these families a house: you are giving them the opportunity to rent a house.
19:50
Jon: September isn't a good time to plant.
Tool tip on screen: Make sure you sow your crops in autumn which starts in September.
Jon playing this game shows his track record when playing any kind of city building game. Eventually he tries to heavily militarize his nation while turning his population into indentured servants. I expect the same will come about in this game.
Well he is British.....
He needs to play more Warhammer 40K games. He'd be right at home. Rogue Trader just came out and is a perfect candidate.
True brit at heart isn't he
Jon every Total War game "Give me an option that isn't total war."
Jon every game where war isn't the primary objective "We sing in praise of Total War."
@@reliantncc1864 i thought rogue trader was a game like xcom
Linen shirts, eggs, and Total War controls.
Jon's all set.
"What's the point of having a doomfortress if no-one can see it because the sight lines are obstructed?"
Sounds like Jon Tenpenny needs to hire Mr Burke
"I CAN'T SEE YOU!" Sauron was very disappointed.
In my experience, you don't need to build a road deep into the woods and set a hunter's camp literally in there. You can just set it close-ish to your town, and from there you can select the area where your hunters will go find animals (the forest). They will carry the carcass back to camp and clean it there, store meat, etc. So the closer to your city the better.
Yeah, the only things roads do is make oxen horses and other animals move faster. The only point to doing that on a far away building is so the ox can carry the building materials to it a bit faster. Makes more sense to be put near the town in almost all cases.
That hat is known as a Chaperon. What's cool about it is that it's actually a hood worn as a hat. Your head goes in the hole where your face pokes out when it's a hood, and the fancy part on the left is the part that covers your neck and shoulders, and the part on the right is the liripipe that would come off the back of the head portion of the hood :)
I literally came down to the comments to look for the person educating about the hat. Thank you for being a boon to the MATN community.
Three tents and a cow named Linhartt sounds like the name of a banger comedic sketch
What do sausages have to do with it?
/2 drumbeats and a cymbal clash sound off in the distance while I let myself out.
A 70s BBC styled comedy about 14th century nomads trying (and repeatedly failing) to establish an independent settlement would be comedy gold. The premise of the show would only be good for a season or two, but I'd be fine with that. I think if social media got wind of the show being similar to Fawlty Towers or Are You Being Served, it's reaction would probably be outrage at various offensive stereotypes, so killing it off before it gets popular would be best.
@@torgranael It would probably be called "Confessions of a peasant", and be really bawdy as it ends up in loads of romping in haystacks. Starring Robin Askwith.
I'm pretty sure the "no stable space" warning was there because you had nobody working in the stables.
Possibly - but the tool tip says that stable workers just speed up animal work - and it wasn't present at the start with the first ox when nobody was assigned to the hitching post...
@ManyATrueNerd Ah, you're probably right then, just early access bugs.
its most likely to be a bug because on default nobdy need to work at the stable but if nobody works there and you have no free families the lumber wont be dilivered to contructions yards .... lumberjacks and wood cuter will stil use the ox even it is not assgined to it.... the only advantage to but some permanet in the stable is taht you sombody constant guide the ox nothing more
No stable space means that there isn't space for the animal. A hitching post houses one animal, a small stable houses two. Anything beyond that is a glitch.
@ManyATrueNerd I just had this bug myself, and when I click on Livestock on the stable, it thinks there is only one animal there, even though there are two.
Perhaps it thinks there is still only one livestock space at the upgraded stable?
I've been playing for 5 hours straight on gamepass. Great game, can't believe it's mostly been a single dev behind it.
This game is like Banished if it took that next step. And I really loved Banished!
Yeah I sort of remember Jon having done a video on banish a while back
@@steward5871 He did! Only 4 years ago, and NerdCubed did one that got me into the game.... 10 years ago.... How time flies!
@@steward5871 Yeah, he did one about 4 years ago! NerdCubed, who introduced me to the game, had his video..... 10 years ago.... Man, does time fly!
Oh my God, I literally just made a comment just like that only to see yours as the first comment I see after I scroll down.
I hope the balance gets a little better than Banished was; I tried to play it again back in December and it was like I could just not get anything done, even on the easy difficulty.
@@theStonerKid69 It's been a good while since I played it, but I do remember Banished kinda playing like 'You don't know if you're doing well until the middle of the game' when the original population becomes too old
Most important thing to remember is to always make the plots big enough for the icon for an extension to appear. That way you can get chickens, vegetables etc. in every garden of your burgages. Really good for food variety (Writes this comment and watches Jon discover this fact a few minutes later in the video)
I did have, I think, 2 veg gardens and 2 chickens, but mainly it was a giant pile of blacksmiths and joiners.
Also building plots a bit bigger (wider) still, allows a second house so two (4 on lvl 3 i think) families can work the attached production space. Build huge plots (you hit the + and - icon once laid out to increase or decrease the number of individual plots in that space) for veg and orchard for big yields, everything else just big enough for second house and whatever production you need, ie a huge plot with chickens will have one or two coops and the rest is wasted space.
And size only matters for orchards and vegetable gardens. Chickens, goats and the artisan upgrades doesn't matter on the size. The disadvantage of the large vegetable gardens is those families will spend a lot of time there in the spring and fall instead of whatever they're assigned to.
His Grace Jon, The Duke De Escargot, crawls along at a snail's pace.
It's the yolo run's all over again
Surprised it took nearly 10 mins for Jon to mention a doom fortress
Same here, as it’s probably the one thing he wants more than anything else in the world
@@Weazel1It's the Briton in him. It's just instinctual to just sail around the world, stick flags in random beaches and then build a doom fortress.
You have to admire Linhart's understanding that a peasant can live by obedience alone, if sufficiently dedicated.
I love seeing a game pop up on Game pass and thinking "I bet Jon's gonna play this one"
A Morgen is the size of a field that a farmer can work in one morning.
Because this is a german game and Morgen means morning in your coblled together language.
This makes the size of a Morgen pretty much arbitrary, since it depends on the ground to be worked,
on the crops to be worked, on the time of year, humidty, workforce of the farmer etc.
It is a polish game, it's made by a guy whose nickname is literally slav magic. But other than that you're right :)
a fortnitght of morgans make at least a butt of wine, which is at least two hogsheads
This might be the most entertaining city builder type game I have seen Jon play!
Whenever the final version of this comes out, I would LOVE a full series of this! ❤
Jon jokes that his snail heraldry is silly, and yet the Merovingian dynasty just had three frogs on theirs when Clovis was starting out.
There was also a large body of medieval marginalia involving snails. I'd actually be surprised with his degree in classics if Jon doesn't already know this.
@@Electracionisn't marginalia a type of butter?
...Wait a minute;
>Foraging for berries.
>Cutting down wood to make more structures.
>Ultimate goal is to attack your neighbors and be the new lord of the land.
THIS IS JUST AGE OF EMPIRES 2!
I appreciate that as the lord Jon takes the time to visit his most valued villager Linhartt, the ox.
So far, in my experience, its a great game. Its just very clearly work in progress! Many missing features, some balancing problems, a few pathfinding bugs, one rather amusing graphical glitch that weirdly almost seemed like a real life thing (a goat shed clipping through a fence into the middle of the road, with the goats roaming outside of their enclosure) - but still fun and relaxing.
Give the developer some time and patience and its on course to be a classic town builder we'll return to for years to come.
One guy made the entire game
This game kinda reminds me of Stronghold a bit. Makes me want to get this game even more cuz I loved that game back in the day
ON THE WALLS!
Yes! As soon as I saw the portraits I was suspicious
@@Lucifer_26 "Do you ever get that feeling of deja vu?"
14:22 "This is now your best work.." cut immediately to the surrounding ramshackle village revealing this is, indeed, their best work by far xp
Oxen like Linhart are indeed great, and I love that they made sure to add those into the game. Oxen and other beasts of burden were crucial to medieval societies for just about any task.
Btw medieval peasants did in fact name their animals. It is unclear if that practice extended to every head of cattle or just their favourite ones but in a collection of testaments from 13th century southern France, researchers found a lot of different instances of farmers leaving specific cattle and other animals to specific children, family members or friends and designating those animals by name. Turns out animal names haven't changed that much since then and most stereotypical animal names were already in use back then. My favourite has to be the exemple of a goat called "Estoile" or star in old provençal.
omfg, I saw this on Steam yesterday, and thought "I'll wait til Jon makes a vid on it to decide if I get it or not" and low and behold, time to decide if I wanna buy this game or not
Oh no, Jon's in another city builder. At least this one doesn't have highways. I'm sure the peasants he is going to control can take some comfort in that at least.
"Brian" is your coat of arms...yeahh
"I feel like the society is about 2 months away from catching fire and exploding" - perfectly describing just about any time in any place pre industrial farming/refrigeration and many many places even now. One failed crop away from anarchy.
Cow? That's no cow, that's an ox
Speaking of strong foundations, man do I wish Foundation hadn't become abandonware, it had so much potential and did so many things brilliantly.
Hmm...this sort of feels like Banished, but better (like duh, since Banished came out like 10 years ago) and has a military component to it.
I'm 5 minutes in and if Linhart dies I'm gonna riot
Whew!
Hey Jon don't know if you'll see this or if you take this kind of stuff into account but if you give a family a backyard goat farm by clicking on there house the goats do provide hide it wouldn't make much but it'd be enough to tide the peasants over until the great leather march can be completed. You just have to build them so that they can actually have a backyard. It takes up space but it is very helpful in dire situations
I'd love to see a full playthrough at some point.
I already know I want a livestream of this and I’m only at 6:00.
Ah, yes... bee keeping is an absolute must! By the by, would you, kind sir, direct this thirsty traveler to the meadery?
I feel like if you enjoy this one, you’d probably like medieval dynasty where you also build your own town/city from nothing and it’s all in first person.
"In order to afford our Doom Fortress we'll first need to make people happy"
..."a snail's pace", you say? What a relief! Perhaps there is a chance that I can keep up! :)
Watching this while playing Manor Lords myself. Such a relaxing experience.
No way I just bought this game. It seems awesome!
This was class, we definitely need more of this when it's fully released
Jon talks about bugs and glitches just as an NPC walks through a wall, genius Jon.
Awesome a new episode of the Manor-lorian
Many thanks, milord Jon! :)
I wound love to see a series of this once it's properly out and not early access.
I rarely buy a game as soon as it becomes available, but I bought this one within minutes of release and I love it. There are very few flaws for early access with very beautiful graphics and deep game mechanics. Farthest Frontier was my most recent go-to game for this genre and it's still on my playlist, but now number two. I look forward to more additions and depth, but to be honest it is great right out of the chute. A rare occurrence today IMO.
I've been eargerly awaiting this video!
Jon's villagers have no idea that they are doomed.
After watching this, I desperately need a Civ Fallout in my life.
Oh god yeah
That the adjacent area is called Waldbrand would make me very nervous
0:37 The "hat" is called a chaperon and its actually a type of liripipe hood that can be wrapped up and worn as a hat.
It's one of my favourite hats purely for that reason 😅
@@ellaisplotting Yeah, I got one for medieval re-enactment and also use it for LARP.
For the glory of the SNAIL!
Game is great, only major complaint I have after 30 or so hours is that when you demolish a building it drops the construction materials where the building stood so you can’t put something else there until your villagers move the supplies, if they decide they want to.
Yes, the times I had to have a kink in a road to get round supplies.
Had just heard about this game and said yep i know who i wanna see play this
25:50 This is one of my favorite features of the game so far, also a quick way to get Hides and turn them into Leather to get that L2 House earlier.
Been watching @conflictnerd play this and was thinking to myself, "man, I really hope Jon picks this up soon". My wish has been granted 😌
Bloody Fantastic!
I've been waiting for this one!
Jon you just make me smile!
Jon is the reasons Medieval monks have nighmarish snail jousting knights in scriptures.
Looks like a fun game. I’ll probably check it out when they release the full thing.
Wait... this medieval based town building game has a playable character wearing a flamboyant head piece wearing vaguely MATN colors, a snail as a symbol, and various hues of pink and purple. I think the devs might have seen Jon coming from miles off!
Also: the way I would read the green down arrow in the approval rating is "Currently positive (57%) but overall declining."
11:00
"He's obviously beekeeping age.
I dunno, I think it's kinda sweet..."
ah you say the coat of arms might be the issue? i thought it was peak fashion last year.... oooh boy...
I more or less agree with your summation. Manor Lords has a lot of potential, but it's too incomplete at the moment for me to really enjoy.
Has Jon ever mentioned Kingdom Come : Deliverance? I feel like it’s right up his alley
I'm pretty sure he's played it a bit on the channel before.
Very similar game, except that in this one you start with more status.
I don't think he was driven out due to the snail. I think he comes from a nation where hat knobs only go up to 10 and he felt constrained.
6:19 Seems Eddie Hall is the one pulling that cart, dude just physically manhandles it like nothing.
No hate, but I’m so Manor Lorded out right now.
mfw I manored my lord too much
best pop up notification so happy u play it
I would love to see a full series of this from Jon. Hopefully we see more to come, I know its EA but still.
This is such a beautiful game and it’s so good I’m watching 3 play throughs 🤣. It looks so good and fun though
Why oh why did he line up the Medeival cottages like they’re a Main Street in the suburbs? They should be closer together, surrounding a communal grazing area, etc. Jon’s weird thing about symmetry and order (or spirals) always lets him down with residential planning.
When I saw Manor Lords pop up in my timeline, I thought it was a mod or sequel to M&B Banner Lords. Whoops
Looks fun!
Good Luck, Lad.
Bought this yesterday and Its a great game! And I am very glad to see John play it But there is some bugs where your workers will just keep waiting and do nothing. To fix this I saved the game and reloaded it. Hope it helps others!
One of the default character names in this game is "Cuntz"
Hey Jon could you check out Songs of Syx as well? Great city builder, perfect for the channel
Day 88 of requesting _Age of Mythology_ (a full playthrough if possible)
I knew this game would show up eventually, and that a number of its features would appeal to Jon. I personally would make sure that future developments in the game allow for things like enemy nations as well as enemy lords, so that you could team up with a former foe to defend against someone you both hate.
Was wondering how long it would take John to click on the Eye icon and go into 3rd person walk about mode lol :D
Makes me miss Anno1800, love these strategy city builders but they take so much time... next up for me is Frostpunk 2 first though.
It's that Witcher 2 roach guy's silly medieval hat. Come on.
chaperon
nice
John I literally just said to my friend that we ought to watch a Let's Play of Manor Lords and here you are, 1 minute later
I love watching you play these games but i never purchase early access on principle
Yessss
I get it why nobody upgrade the homeless tents becaus the tooltip says something about happiness loss but in fact ( dont know if the tooltip is wrong or early access bug) the opposite is true especially with standart happiness difficulty........ the get it clear the flag about homeless still shows up but you can recruite them in the militia they gain happiness boost from food, clothing and church and you start getting pobs with the first house build
What's a more stupid coat of arms: your snail one or my idea of dragon head with snail shell
This game seems to be heavily influenced by Stronghold. If that's the case, ale should be the key to happiness. Also, Jon really should play Stronghold at some point.
yessssss
Bount and Made: Manor Lord
If this was realistic, you'd be able to capture and eat the bandits to help you through the winter. Boo game boo!
make your housing plots bigger so people can have backyards to have chicken coops veg gardens goats etc
if you loved that low down view you're going to love the walk around view. With the fabulous cloak! EDIT. You found it! :P
this must be the most youtubed new game in recent memory. I hope it doesn't crumble under the insane hype. Would be a shame.
also kinda missed all the (expensive) options for his doom fortress.
