I have one and used it last time I went camping. I paired it with a Soto Windmaster and was surprised just how fast it boiled a mug of water. I managed to get the following inside the mug in the following order; gas canister upside down, 10" square microfibre towel folded to a third in size, soto windmaster triangular pot support first then the stove across it at right angles, 2" round piece of scourer sponge, bic mini lighter and finally a folding titanium spoon. On top of the lid of the pot a sea to summit folding mug fits perfectly upside down and between the pot and the mesh bag there is room for tea bags, coffee bags and hot chocolate sachets. Incredible bit of kit.
I had to pause the video at 9:55 to correct you. The pot sits directly on the stove's pot stand for both the titanium pot and the heat exchanger pot. The distance from flame to pot is exactly the same. The DIFFERENCE is that the heat exchanger surrounds the flame capturing heat that otherwise might flow up the outside of the pot and be wasted.
Was just thinking the same.
Truth.
I love the clear lids. I can see if the water is boiling without taking off a metal lid!!!!
It's key with this pot because it starts boiling so quickly paired with the right stove. I use the fire Maple Polaris on as low a heat setting as I can go and it still only takes about 1min 30sec.
Referencing the original Star Trek movie, what we need is the “clear aluminum” Scotty mentioned after the crew returned to 20th century earth in search of a whale.
@@allendevans Haha! Love StarTrek references (maybe I spend too much time in my basement on the internet!).
@@allendevans didn't he call it transparent aluminum ? Live long and prosper😊
As some other viewers have pointed out, the BRS3000 doesn't fit at all. You have to bend the stove legs significantly to make it fit. For me, even the Pocket Rocket 2 did not fit and it seems like the Deluxe has the same angled pot stand legs - so I would assume it also does not fit.
It is not enough to have a stove with 3 legs, the legs must also be radial to the stove head. In fact, there aren't many stoves out there that fit the petrel, since most have angled pot stand legs.

Hey Ernie! Up until this year, I have relished the quietness of my alcohol burner with a wood backup. Needless to say, on 4 day, 5 day or longer trips, that means a lot of fuel if I want to try to stay soot free!! This year I have paired this pot with the Fire Maple Titanium Hornet and it has been unbelievably fast to boil, light in the backpack, and uses very little fuel per boil!! Great products !! This goes with me everywhere now but I still love an overnighter with a Super quiet alcohol stove ! Thanks for your review !
In case you are wondering, English water kettles have been using that exact technology for many decades. I think Jetboil got the idea from them. I have an old English copper kettle with that enclosed coil HE tech. They definitely work better than plain old flat-bottom kettles. This kettle is PERFECT for what I am currently looking for, for simple soup/water boiling at home on my gas stove!
I have had this set up for about 6 months now and I'm happy with it. works for me,
I like the price, and I like that it works with any stove. You save the community tons of fuel by doing the comparison for the rest of us. Anything I bought from Fire maple has always been top shelf
Have one and love it. This is 800 ml to the brim and a toaks is 750 to the brim, so the petrel pot has a 50ml volume advantage over toaks 750, ignore the stated 600ml it is plenty big enough. It retains so much of the heat within the HE it virtually does not let the heat spew out from under the pot. Brilliant thing. BRS, Nope unless you force the legs bent to fit it. Nice review👍🏼
I was about to write this too. It is actually 800ml.
Thanks for the info..... As always you have helped me decide, I just got a 25 dollar Amazon gift card at a company Christmas party and I just used it to order this pot, I think it will make a perfect UL solution for me, as always .... Keep the great videos coming and I'll keep watching.
Thanks Doctor Ernie for presenting another tempting boiler pot…😊!
I would like to see your video on your home made lightweight cooking set-up.
Have a great day
I have the Petrel G3 pot, and I must say it is even better in a real live setting, compared to my old titanium 500ml pot. Best ultra light camping gear I bought this year :)
My experience also. 👍🏻
I’ve got this pot, paired with the SOTO wind master and tri flex pot stand, it’s as good as/better than my jet boil minimo! And 2/3 of the price!
I have been using the MSR Alpine 2 Pot set which contains a 1.5L, 2.0L, Fry pan/ plate lid, with a nesting 1.0L teapot. They are bomb proof and have served me very well over many years.
Looks very useful as a UL. Turning 61 shortly, sticking closer to camp and slow cooking in cast iron. But have always enjoyed your content Sir.
I have been using one of these pots for 9 months now and i love it. The weight penalty is worth the convenience of being able to boil enough water for a meal in under two minutes with a BRS (I had to modify the slots in the bottom with a Dremel). This pot also makes the BRS much less affected by wind.
I have the Sterno heat exchanger pot n kit from the late 80s. Works great..
Yes please do come up with a lightweight camping set.
It actually has more volume than advertised. Works great with Windmaster. I have this and the TOAKS 750. TOAKS lid fits very well on it, if that helps. Especially because the lid will "stick" closed once water boils, which is dangerous (and no doubt will lead to spills and burns). So yeah, lid no-so-good. But it's very sturdy with the notches.
I have this pot and the biggest advantage is in normal moderate winds encountered outside. Don't need a windscreen at moderate wind speeds. Allows for cheap three pronged stoves (not BRS, it doesn't fit). It's Al, so a bit heavier than Ti, but Al has almost an order of magnitude higher thermal conductivity than Ti, so simply much more efficient at heating.
Of course you should! We'd love to see how this fits into an ultimate cook kit. You could even boil water, while we watch.
Great recommendation with explanations
Looks like a good niche product. Enjoy your content
Fire Maple also makes a non slotted bottom heat exchanger pot that is 1l liter capacity. Will work with any type of small stove. Can be found on Amazon as well for $30. Since I have a Soto Wndmaster with the 4 flex pot holder so I would probably just go with that one rather than the petrel. I have the Toaks 1100 pot with the bail handle and love it so the heat exchanger pots may just be on my wish list for a while yet.
This is for those wanting a lighter, more compact system, there are plenty of larger, bulkier, heavier pots already. Your comment is completely irrelevant.
@@farmermark2067 SOTO Windmaster triflex is minimal cost and is a bit lighter than 4 flex. Makes a good secure fit with the triflex and Petrel pot.
@@SnowyAspenHills The Windmaster with Triflex, a mini Bic lighter as well as a Sea-to-Summit 250ml silicone cup fits under the lid with a small gas cannister. I love that it all fits and the lid is held in place by the handle. Now my favourite hiking cook kit.
@@RobBremner your comment is irrelevant, as I found his on the alternate pot very useful. So shut it and go pound sand you rude jackarse.
@@GideonSmitalternatively, one of the new S2S Frontier collapsible cups can replace the lid entirely, save weight and provide a better sized cup.
I bought this to pair with my Svea 123. It is perfect!
Seeing it in percent % the results are even more impressive. Thank you!
Yes, I had got a Jetboil several years ago thinking it would be my everything stove for hiking. Due to the JB weight, I’ve been for a couple of years now using a BRS 3000t stove a Toaks 750ml Titanium cup. I could get lighter, but right now I like this set up.
Your Videos Are Always Very Informative Doc,Much Appreciated 👍
Major. Oversight to not test with and without wind.
Thanks a lot for your amazing videos over the last years. Watching from Germany.
I’m using the firemapel pod for a few weeks now (more than 50€ with taxes in Gemany). I love this pod over your pro, because it‘s so stable on top of my Soto Windmaster with triflex pod stand.
Another great video sir
I have not yet tried my Fire Maple 600 ml pot, but my Toaks lid fits.
And its 10 grams lighter than the lid that comes with it 😉, thats what i use instead
What size Toaks lid, please?
Teh 750ML lid?
@@RobBremner the lids for both my Toaks 550 and 750 fit the Fire Maple just fine.
@@Slow_poke_hiker lids from both the Toaks 750ml and the 550ml pots fit my Fire Maple pot.
I don't know if anyone has commented on the use of the Petrel pot with diy alcohol stoves. This heat exchanger pot eliminates the need for a windscreen. Yes it's primarily design was for three-pronged upright and remote canister stoves, but I have seen the secondary, and most beneficial design result, benefit is the overall efficiency in the presence of wind.
😊❤ Thank you, always enjoy your videos!!!
I’m curious to see what sort of difference it makes when paired with an alcohol stove like the fancy feast stove.
Doc, go for it! Please make a kit for this pot. I’m interested in what you can come up with. This seems like just the right pot for a little day hike kit, small and lightweight.
Yes, we should! 😊
I bought this about a week ago, for £18.00, bargain. I mainly use my Trangia alcohol stove, so wasnt sure the heat exchanger would make much difference, but it does. About 75 seconds quicker. With my cheapo gas stove, very impressive. 👍🏻
I have been Eyeballing that Fire Maple Pot, Thank you for the info.
I’ve had the Petrel pot four months, no problems with the clear lid. I use it with the Fire Maple GreenPeak stove ($20) no longer available from Amazon. Love this combination and it works for me. Will need auxiliary windscreen in over 8mph wind. FYI, fist California banned alcohol stoves now they are going to ban isobutane canisters starting in 2028.
Ouch, so now what do we use? My antique Svea still works, but it's SO dang Heavy
California is considering a ban on single-use propane cylinders. Isobutane is NOT under consideration for a ban.
@@CarlTyler-c7g Tyvm!
Great review, Ernie.
I use one of these with the OG MSR Pocket Rocket 1.... works fine, though the newer PRs get the burner closer to the pot. Cheers, Ernie!!
You can use the fire maple hornet 2, fire maple buzz, fire maple polaris and the Soto windmaster triflex with it.
I liked it so much, I bought another. One for my wife and one for me.
I like the lid as I can see through it but it sticks when boiling.600ml is just right for me for dehydrated food. I use it with a fire maple hornet, an msr spork, cloth, gas can and I also included an Optimus clip on windscreen.
Dittos on the sticking part!! I try to crack the lid open a hare when it gets close to boiling but it is usually stuck by then anyways. Just going to need 2 hands any way I look at it. I have gotten to a point where I just leave the lid on since it is easy to tell when you've reached a boil without peeking. I have not tried pouring through the vent when the lid is stuck on to see if it falls off once you start pouring. Time will tell but I have adapted..........
@@hike-bike-paddle-and-drone I leave it on at a slant.
People may have heard of the lid sticking issue which happens only as the water reaches boiling point. My solution has been to purchase one of the wire drip clips that helps the water pour more accurately when making drip coffee (Ali express) this stops the lid from jamming, alternatively wait a few seconds and the lid will then be loose enough to remove it.
A paper clip would do the same thing but wouldn’t help with pouring the water.
I drilled an air hole on the side opposite the pouring cutouts. Lid stays put, and it pours well.
@@Thrutch Did that stop the lid from jamming? I can see that would help with pouring water.
@SnowyAspenHills It still jams while piping hot. I'm only boiling water, so pouring with the lid stuck on works for me. I was skeptical about how firmly it would stay on while pouring, but I tested it several times at home (because I love boiling water in the garage) before taking it outside, and it's worked like a charm every time. It's a weirdly designed lid. I got boiling water everywhere the first time I tried using the cutouts because the pour is so erratic while sucking air. No idea why they don't drill it for you, but it makes the jamming bug a feature for me.
Yes it does and I like to use when using paper coffee filters as it is more controllable and accurate.
Very thoughtful review..
Thanks Doc!
I did this years ago with a sterno inferno pot and a BRS stove. It does shave time and weight. This seems a better option as the sterno BRS interface was marginal at best.
Been using a similar pot, an Olliecamp XTS, for a couple of years now. Wasnt big on the idea of anodized aluminum but there is not any chipping to this day. I use a UCO double ended plastic spoon. Not big on the idea of plastic but it still looks brand new after hundreds of uses. Used it with both of the main fuel stove types, but I prefer Trangia with the yellow Heet. Its very affordable because I'm using maybe 1/3 less fuel with the cookpot. It doesnt take as long to reach a boil and can do so with a diy soda can top simmer ring. It maintains heat for long enough to remove from the burner and let a soup or etc finish cooking the last couple of minutes. Havent gotten around to making a pot cozy mostly because it hasn't seemed necessary. It's very lightweight, light enough to carry in a pack and end up usually with a baseweight of around 10-12 lbs.
Yes we need a heads up ultralight diy video
Ernie, I was just surfing on Amazon and saw a new and different type of alcohol stove that I would love to see you review. It is from the company Mtaigdiec. (no that is not misspelled) They call it their premium adjustable camping stove. It is a pressurized alcohol stove with a coil burner. Hope to see you do a video on it soon.
Big stove
Wow, this stove is really something. It's $170.00,though. It's a pressurized alcohol stove.
I want to see how it works on an alcohol stove with wind screen (reflector). Seems like their may be more gains to be had on the alcohol side.
Works excellent. Can get a boil even with a simmer ring. Got an olliecamp xts that's almost exactly like this.
You should try it with the soto wind master with the tri flex and compare it to a jetboil flash. Enjoyed the video, and thanks.
Yes please! Try the Toaks lid.
Good review
Do it it would be great thanks 👍
Go For It Doc
As a pale, old hiker, I approve this message! 😊
Its hard to know which tri-legged stoves work with it or not
The legs need to be pointing out directly from the center, so for example the BRS is not a good fit.
I am using it with an original MSR Pocket Rocket, and this stove works great with this pot.
Thanks for the video. I'll stick with my 1.1L GSI SS pot. Metal lid.
Cool pot. Only downside for me is that it really needs one of those three arm style stoves, which I don't have or use. If I ever get one, this pot would be on the list of possibles though. Thanks
MSR started out with a brass heat exchanger that clamped to the outside of the pot.
I've still got and use one of these.
Bulky/heavy, but great for family trips and works a treat.
It was gold anodized aluminum with a stainless steel band made from the remnants of a strip from which some stainless stove parts were punched. I worked at REI when these came out in the 1980s.
@@danielkutcher5704 I had one but I couldn't remember what it was made out of, but I remembered the color and that it was heavy (due to the steel band, I assume).
I like the low volume just because 1L or bigger heat exchanger pots are a dime a dozen. Small ones are very rare.
I wish you would do the boil test at 50% output in addition to full blast. I'm more interested in fuel savings over boil time.
Cracking pot especially if you get it in the kit with stove Ti spoon and flint and steel about £49 at outdoor gear essentials in UK nice viddy 👌
For the "ultimate" backpacking cook kit, consider also reviewing the Fire Maple Green Peak stove. It's small enough, and I wonder if it fits under the pot even more securely.
I have the almost identical earlier Firemaple HX pot (- without the stand cutouts, but my BRS 3000 fits inside); works great even with a bioethanol stove, boils the water very, very efficiently, highly recommended, I rate it as being far superior to my titanium pots in terms of heating efficiency.
It works super fast with the Fire Maple Green Peak or Polaris stove!
Would love to see an ultra light cook set up.
Would love to see a cook kit video.

Yes Ernie make it a light jet boil. But also make it with the pocket rocket deluxe for those that have it and the Soto stove. Thanks sir. I have heard the volume is more than the 600ml that are listed is this true. If you pour a 700 ml in the pot does it fill to a similar spot in the pot. Again thanks.
I have this pot and use it regularly with a SOTO Windmaster with triflex, it boils two cups of water in about 1:30.
My concern with HE pots is they seem to make a lot of carbon monoxide in my limited testing.
Why is this? Why would more carbon monoxide be produced?
How are you observing this, being that CO is odorless and colorless?
@@IAMSatisfied Two carbon monoxide monitors
I have observed this with different HE pots and stove combinations. I was trying out stoves in a well ventilated room and my CO monitors showed high readings and alarm went off.
When using the same stoves with regular pots virtually zero CO was detected. If using HE pots outside and of course that’s where they should be used there shouldn’t be an issue but even in a tent vestibule with only minimal ventilation I would have concerns. I’m not a scientist nor have I done any serious testing it’s only my personal experience/findings but I thought I would put out there as it could be a safety issue in certain circumstances.
@@ddff5242 No idea, just what I have observed.
Future ultimate cook kit update? Yes! My titanium cook kits all have a coozy (some integrated into the stuff sack) with the idea to use it as an insulated mug. Not sure that makes sense with this pot. I’ve also added a separate mug to most kits, nesting inside or outside the pot. If I need to carry the canister elsewhere so be it. If you make your ultimate lightweight canister cook kit, the insulated cup functionality should considered.
BRS have now brought out a 0.5 L Jet Boil type cooker, the BRS 61.
DO ... IT ... DO ... IT ... DO ... IT😊
Good review, thanks for sharing, YAH bless !
Only works with perpendicular 3 pronged stoves. It doesn't really work with angled 3 prong stoves like the BRS or Blade II. Did you force your BRS on? Haha!
I still wish there was a titanium version of this. A titanium heat exchanger pot would be SICK! -- And for the existing version of the G3 (and now G2), they could certainly make this lighter by using a lighter lid.
Titanium wouldn’t work well. The HE fins need to conduct heat - that’s their job. Titanium is a really poor conductor of heat. Aluminium is a really good one.
It probably weighs just at the weight of my Jetboil Stash when packed up with the MSR Pocket Rocket or other MSR 3 prong canister stoves.
FYI, I saw someone on RUclips (search why I ditched my toaks) showing the 750 full water on toaks pot doesn’t fill to the top of the 600ml fire maple pot. Looking at specs is one thing but the test is the real deal.
The "mesh case" probably doubles as a pot scrubber, a la Snow Peak's Trek pots.
Have used my jetboil since i got it nearly 20 years ago (🤔?) It changed my life. But! It wasn't quite perfect, it saved me big time on gas( i cut the amount needed for a 2wk trop by 40-50%). But this new firemaple pot looks like it might just solve some of my issues with the jetboil.
Need to see a small Kelly Kettle design made of titanium.
go 100k !
Curious if an alcohol stove would work with this pot positioned say 1.5 inches below the main body of the base?
Do the kit! 😂
Hey Ernie I refuse to use a canister stove would you test with an alcohol stove?
I hate canister stoves for a myriad of reasons.
Weight of canister
The noise
Stealth camping IMPOSSIBLE
ISOBUTANE doesn’t like cold
Empty canisters are on a short trip to landfill
After re watching the Ohuhu stove review I ordered one it came today. This pot pot will fit the stove It will be interesting to see how they work together?
30 seconds on a month long trip with 3 hot meals adds up, not to mention the extra fuel that I don't need to carry. $20 vs 30 seconds * 3 times a day for 30 days (45 minutes back, can't make more time).
Is 600ml the usable volume or total volume?
I would worry that the brs stove would overheat as it overheats with standard pots. Brs stoves are inefficient so IMHO would lose the advantage of the heat exchanger. There are lots of low cost stoves that have better performance than the brs.
Don't think the bra stoves fit anyway. The legs are angled wrong.
Ernie I love the stuff that you do! But don't look down on the stash pot! It has higher capacity at 800ml and weighs 0.5 oz less! Stash pot is wider aswell which helps with heat transfer. The stash burner is 2oz and very fuel efficient. For 1 oz more i can switch the burner to soto windmaster for some wind resistance, since we know that the stash burner ain't doing a THING in the wind. 800 ml capacity is enough for a rehydrated meal and a cup of coffee or tea!
Yeah sure the stash costs much more than the petrel pot. I was lucky with buying the system second hand for 35 euros (roughly the same in dollars). Don't skip out on second hand stuff!
Will this or some other firemaple pot fit a jetboil burner?
The new G2 just came out with a better design.
You reviewed a double wall titanium cup a week or so ago….. does it nest with this?
Its better to put the gas inside the pot upside down, it gives you a bit more space 😉
Do it!
Doesn't work with the BRS but is perfect for the Soto Windmaster.
I have seen people saying the pocket rocket 2 does not fit? Can you confirm for sure it does?
toss in a couple instant coffee sticks and it's complete
