    100,000 views, thanks everyone who took the time to watch this video. I guess I should have a Give-Away to mark this milestone. This is my first video to reach 100K. I will be posting a video next week to announce the Give-Away.....

    thanks for the comments boys, RW2709 i never dragged the rabbit this time, but no harm in that. Coyotes can be tuff, especially if they have had past experiences with snares. I'm after a tom cat I missed last year and he has walked right up to my snares this year. I could catch him with a soft catch but i'm enjoying the cress match with snares to much to switch trapping modes.

    hey RW2709, post some of your trapping videos, lets see your set-up. sometimes if the snare loops are to small they back out of them before committing. The smallest diameter I set for coyote is 10" all my coyote snares are between 10" to 12" dia. depending on the set-up. I have had coyotes walk right up to bobcat snare and back off with their paw print right under the snares. My cat snares are 7" loops, but you just might be after some snare smart coyotes. You'll get him...

    • @NLGhostWolf

      Yes Bobcat, but no lynx for me in NL. Haven't tried since I retired and I focused on mink when before I left and joined the Forces. Once the fur prices rebound I will try for a few Lynx in the future.

    I've never sat and watched. But as long as the snare is set correctly not very long. Its dependent on the snare design what it is made out of and such. If designed properly snares can also be used for a live catch. I know of some people who have done that in order to catch an animal for relocation.

    I forgot to tell you I shot a Coyote last weekend. It was no match for my 7mm Mag. I shot it because it was trespassing in my deer hunting grounds.

    add the survival shelter and you could track snare lines in more remote areas of the wilderness

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  8 лет назад +1

      Yes you are right about that. I will be using shelters to help explore remote fishing and hunting areas later this summer. Just retired and waiting for me belongings to get here. Once I have them and we are settled, I will be taking multiple trips per week into remote areas in search of adventures where others don't travel.

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  8 лет назад +2

      Here is a video of me making fox and lynx snares. I do the same for coyote except I make them longer. My coyote snares are 10" - 12" in diameter and I don't use fencing wire to anchor the snare, I make another loop end in the coyote snare. On the next video I do if I remember I will show you a completed coyote snare.

    how high do you hang your snares

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  10 лет назад

      Between 9-11" normally but it often depends on the location of snare. I won't normally set about 12" or below 8" for a coyote, but again it depends on location. (i.e. Setting on a log over a stream, animals will normally crouch when walking a log so I set lower in logs then on ground). When I set my snares higher I will use chin lifters to help ensure the animal I am targeting places his head through the snare. I don't measure my snare heights, so the info I just gave could be off by an inch or two, but I feel it is very close. Hope this helps.

    seriously....if these videos offend you tree huggers so much why do you actively seek them out just so you can bitch and preach to people who enjoy this activity about how wrong it is, just because YOU dont agree with it? What in the hell makes you so much better than everybody else, that us hunters and trappers have to do what you tell us? Get over yourselves...for every recreational trapper there are about 100 trappers who do this for a LIVING and have way more extensive traplines which their livelihood depends on. I know you think just because you make a RUclips comment one of us will all of a sudden pause, think to ourselves, "hey, that guy/girl on RUclips doesn't like when i kill animals....I dont think I will do it ever again...golly gee am i ever glad I read that comment!"
    nice video by the way, i learned a lot : )

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  10 лет назад +1

      I read and understand your frustration and it is mostly because people never truly take the time to study wildlife over numerous seasons through the high and low cycles and see what happens to animals when they eat themselves out of house and home so to speak. I was a trapper for the DNR in NS about 25 years ago, and I have seen first hand what happens when fur prices drop, less conservationists/trappers are out trapping and animal populations explode. Once they over come the "carrying capacity" of the land they inhabit and starvation, sickness and disease sets in and you receive a call from a lady who has a raccoon that is nearing its end with a long battle with distemper. Eyes crusted over, animal suffering, crying out in pain and agony, once the DNR receives the call they would call me to go capture and destroy the animal. A healthy raccoon can last up to 3 months before the distemper kills them, that is 3 months of suffering most animal lovers never get to witness or never get educated on by the support groups they join or support. But those people who had seen and witnessed this first hand truly understand the guiding principles of conservation and the importance of keeping animal numbers balanced out so everyone benefits. When this happens effectively all animal lovers get to enjoy the conservation successes that provide everyone an opportunity to see and study a healthy population of animals.
      bhatt45, thanks for watching, understanding and enjoying the video. It's very much appreciated.

      NLGhostWolf hey I trap to but with snares how do u know a deer won't walk down that path and get snared? Just wondering

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  10 лет назад +2

      Chris Heald Well you simply just don't know, however if you notice the snare I got the rabbit in at the beginning of the video and the snare I got the coyote in at the end of the video I use a log over the snare that deer will go over and coyotes and fox will go under. When setting in areas where moose or deer would use, I always set with a log over top to ensure the bigger non-target animals step/jump the snares. Where I don't use the log over top is where I've never seen sign of deer/moose. So far after nearly 40 years of trapping, I've never caught a moose or deer in a snare. But I know other trappers haven't been so lucky and they have caught non-target animals, deer and moose. I always try and set with good intentions of catching the target species I'm after, but I have caught non-target animals in sets, i.e. rabbits in fox snares, squirrels in marten traps, and way to many mice in squirrel traps. But by studying the habits of the game animals you are after, accidental catches are greatly reduced, and knock on wood I've never caught a moose or deer yet and hope I never well. Great question, and thanks for taking the time to watch the video and ask the question. Much appreciated... Another example of how I place logs over sets where I think a moose would go is in the video "Marten Trapping 04 Nov 14" at the 3:23 mark of the video. You can see how I place logs to guide non-target animals over or around the path where the snare is placed. Hope this answers or question.
