He was a student at The University of Texas in Austin (where the movie was filmed) when he auditioned for this. Who knew it would lead to a future career as a movie star.
He got lucky and then he made things happen because he know that he was getting his big break. He also knew that the music made the film too,. Director Richard Linklater originally didn’t think McConaughey was right for the part, but eventually he came around with a little help from the actor. Linklater spoke with the Georgia Straight Opens a New Window. about casting McConaughey as Wooderson. “When I first met Matthew, he came in and he’s, like, this really good-looking, clean-cut guy, and that threw me off, cause I never saw Wooderson like that,” Linklater said. “I was, like, ‘No, you’re not right for this part.’ I’m thinking this after just meeting him, and he looked at me, and he goes, ‘Hey, I’m not this guy, but I know this guy. "The thing about teaching is, you keep getting older while your students stay the same age." So, you're a teacher, huh? As for the internet trolls, they are best left to wallow in their own misery.
this is coming from a 100% totally heterosexual guy, but is Mathew McConaughey retardedly good looking in this video or is it just me? I can't even imagine how many girls he was getting.
My family is friends with the McConaughey family and his brother Rooster in the 80s and 90s used to come to my family's office and drink every Friday and weekends and tell us about Matthew is going to be a big star in Hollywood I was a senior in high school and I would just laugh.
I've always thought Matthew McConaughey was like the new Marlon Brando of our generation. In fact, he could play a young Marlon Brando if they ever made his life story into a movie, because they look similar. Although Matthew's voice is not as high pitched and nasally as Marlon's. Anyway, I loved this movie when it first came out! It always reminds me of my early school years. I was a lot like Wiley Wiggins' character (the small skinny kid who the older kids let tag along) and I'm also about his age in real life. Great movie!
If anyone, the Brando of our generation is definitely Daniel Day-Lewis. But I think Matthew would be a cool Marlon, but he would need to change his accent of course lol. But the person that resembles Marlon the most is Tom Hardy
jokesterr119 In terms of acting, Daniel Day-Lewis is definitely way up there. When I was comparing Matthew to Brando I didn't mean in terms of acting, but rather their cool laid back very male persona that all the girls like. They both have that same swagger. Burt Reynolds has that same swagger, too, which is why I had recently posted on another video how Matthew would be a great choice to play the lead if they ever did a remake of "Smokey and the Bandit." I also think you're right about Tom Hardy! I can easily see a resemblance in his appearance, mannerisms, and swagger with Brando.

20 years later he turned out to be a great actor but he caught a break by being really charismatic and good looking, and having this distinct look where he looked both young and old at the same time. As shown in his role as Rust Cohle in "True Detective," he can pull off aging 17 years like it's no big deal - but that takes talent as well. The question is, in an America where masculinity is diminishing - we have no more John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Stallone, Schwarzenegger ... Even Bruce Willis - is he masculine enough to to be this generation's iconography of masculinity? Who else is there - Jason Statham? Chris Hemsworth?? I think it has to be McConaughey because of his ability to speak distinctly in a low voice, and has a penchant for ranting semi-sensible observations about life. The reason heterosexual men find him uncomfortably attractive is because his characters ultimately always have their shit together, which is oddly a big part of being manly. If they made him the Marlboro Man, cigarette sales would explode.
He’s doing such a good job of acting high. The way he looks away and touches his face 1 or 2 times his eyes squinting and the way he’s talking it’s all such good acting
