Proper review! I am so bored with car journalists who repeat all the stats from a list given by the manufacturer.. This is Harry Metcalfe level of reporting, very well done!
Thanks for the review! I own L461 (P510) for couple of months and absolutely love the car. I cannot compare to older/other Range Rovers (which you do in your video) but I've had the opportunity to compare with Audi Q8, BMW X5 and BMW X6 which I owned last 3 years. Ride of RR is another level compared to these cars. Absolute hit of the car.
A really good review Joel, thanks. A couple of points to make, I own the new L460 Range Rover and my brother in law owns the new L461, as regards the steering issue, I agree that there is one. However there is one glaring difference between the two models that you might of missed, all 460's come with 4 wheel steering as standard, only the big engined 461's come with it as standard, it's an option on all other models, and boy is it a game changer. The big Range Rover is way better at handling roads good or bad, slow or fast due to the 4 wheel steering, at slow speeds the big Range Rovers wheels turn in the opposite direction, and at higher speeds they turn in the same direction, speed bumps, pot holes seem to be smothered as you would expect. My brother in laws 461 is way more fidgety than the 460, way more, in fact it just doesn't feel right. It does help to turn off the lane assist, but it still is an issue. My 460 has had two over the air software updates and now the problem has vanished, so I think Land Rover knew about it. Both are seriously great cars, but the 4 wheel steering is a game changer for me. All the best!
I have just done 1000 miles in a week in a P460 PHEV Autobiography while visiting the mother country. I didn't have chance to plug it in but it was still brilliant. It was very comfortable and fast, I managed 33 mpg (all my journeys were long) and I will be buying one here in Australia within the next month.
Nice video Joel. I own the D350 Autobiography which I purchased in June this year. First drive was down to Annecy in France so plenty of motorway 70mph driving. To answer your observations about steering I have to say I have not experienced any issues as you describe. I may suggest an explanation for you and in doing so have no intention of criticism of your driving style. A new legal requirement is for all cars to have monitors to ensure both hands are kept on the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause the vehicle to implement safety issues to ensure the vehicle maintains its position on the road. I notice your hands are all over the place, and as you suggest you enjoyed sticking your hands through holes etc. These are not hand holds! My car is on 23 inch wheels and again I find no problems with road surface feedback, however having been used to BMW vehicles with harder suspension settings perhaps I'm more used to issues. Totally agree with your driving style. I just love driving it and am never in a rush. I also get well into 40+ mpg. Thoroughly enjoyed your drive. PS. The fridge was an extra. Don't even have one on Autobiography spec.
I absolutely love this car, this is a fabulous review! For a great review we can’t have journalists being too kind about the cars to stay on the good side of manufacturers! Great review, I will send it to my dad because he’s looking at a L461 P440e Autobiography. 😀
Great honest review Joel! As I love Range Rovers I really love watching reviews, but it's even better from someone who's actually had one as their daily driver. It would be good to have a back-to-back with the older generation RRS as it doesn't seem that all the changes are improvements.
I have the 2025 550e in the US. Wonderful car. I agree with the effort at motorway speed. The effort is way too high. On a multi-hour drive the steering effort is exhausting. It is the only negative I experienced in a well executed design. I also hope they do a software update.
Is the split tailgate really a bonus on the big one? Having owned several, plus Land Cruisers and pickups with such tailgates, only on the pickups do I find the feature of any utility. On a day to day basis it just means a massive stretch to reach anything from the boot and an impossible reach when stuff is up against the second row seat backrest. To that end I always carry a proper authentic alloy shepherds crook to hook stuff and pull them to within reach. On a pickup it enables a pallet to be loaded or a long load, longer than five foot, to be carried flat, so that works, particularly on pickups that have a step up to the open tailgate, such as the latest generation Ford Ranger.
Agree excellent review. I have had my L461 RRS Autobiography D300 for about 9 months/10k miles now. First thing to say is that after my test drive at the dealer, I optioned 20" wheels instead of the standard 22" ones, partly in an attempt to soften the ride but also to get higher profile tyres for better puncture resistance on the dreadful roads around where I live (Bucks). But yes the ride is still a bit fidgety but for me the payback is better body control, certainly compared to my previous L405 P400e which drove like a galleon in storm so far as I'm concerned. And yes the steering is a bit heavy and artificial but personally I prefer that to the overlight steering of the L405. The L461 is no sports car of course but actually I find it quite fun to punt down windy roads. It is called Sport after all. I agree with you on the engine. The D300 is a peach and I dont find myself wanting more power; I'm so glad I went back to diesel after the wheezing P400e PHEV engine package. I regularly average 35-36mpg on fast motorway runs which I find impressive. And yes the whole car is very refined but mine suffers from the same problem as other earlier RRS's and that is wind noise from around the wing mirror which is irritating. And I agree with you entirely on touchscreens in cars. They are dangerous and to put some seat and climate system controls on the touchscreen is a joke. For me the most frustrating thing about the car
Great insight about the car. So you are happier with the D300 compared to the P400e? Were you charging the car over night? I went from a L320 to a L494 HEV and I found the steering much firmer in the L494. Good to know mine is not broken :) I'm on the 21" atm and find the ride a bit firm. How happy are you with the 20s?
@@vasiabikeru yes I charged the P400e religiously at home overnight and at work during the day which meant that the car was quite economical for commuting. The problem was when I went on longer trips when the battery would be fully discharged after 40-50 miles or so and then the P400e would be powered solely by the 2 litre petrol engine which meant that the economy plummeted to around 23-24mpg. Overall throughout the 3yr period I owned the P400e it averaged 33mpg which is actually a bit less than the D300 L461 I am currently running. No way would I swap the D300 engine for the P400e drivetrain. As I said the D300 is a peach of an engine, smooth, torquey, economical and powerful enough for the L461. I have no regrets speccing the 20" wheels
@@mickfinn2596 good to know. I am happy with my L494 3.0 HEV, good to have the extra electrical power and use the 3.0 Diesel the rest of the time. The extra weight does not help fuel economy, but it makes up in road tax :) thank you for the reply.
Is it possible that the 22” make it a harder drive . 20 or 21 with higher tires should make a difference. Would be nice if you could try and tell the outcome>
One of the best overview of this car! Thanks! Regarding changing the lanes and power you need to apply - could be a feature of lane tracking control, and once you turn on the corner light - stearing should become easy for a few seconds until you finish a maneuvr.
Great vid as always Joel, love your style and content, what would be interesting would be the £70k delta between this and a well sorted L322? Or even £60k delta on a L405? I’ve become fixated with RR thanks to you and your content 😂. All the best and keep em coming mate 💪😉
I’m afraid the ride, as is well known by many, who would not drive any thing else, including myself, is all down to the low profile tyres. I’m on my 40th Range Rover(I’m old!!) and it’s all about the profile. People want big wheels??? Why? So they have low profile tyres on their 22” or 23” wheels and there’s no compliance in the side walls, hit a bump and ouch ! If you want the waffting ride and total lack of banging suspension then go for the max wheel size of 20”. If it’s a L322 then it’s a max of 18”. Simples
I think it's a design issue or calibration issue, NOT the wheel size. I got a new Defender on air supension on 18 inch wheels with street tyres, at 30 psi per tyre the ride was still not good, in fact it was that bad I sold the car after 5 weeks. The dealer said it was normal. I think JLR are heading in the wrong direction with the ride on these luxury full size SUV's.
I’ve got a 2023 XE and a 2022 I-pace, funnily enough the ipace got an update over WiFi where the apple CarPlay maps goes to the dashboard. But my XE doesn’t even though it’s newer so I assume they’ll be rolling it out through updates eventually.
I AGREE WITH YOU 100%, I just bought a 2024 Sport last week, and the steering is super annoying. My hands get tired, I'm used to steering with my arm on my leg and using my thumb, I can not do this with this SUV , my hand starts to hurt. I have to constantly change hand position. It takes the fun out of driving. I'm not looking forward to a road trip. I hope this can be modified.
Great review Joel. And yes, the steering is rubbish stiff and the suspension too jolting...ever since the L494 which I now own, after a L320, which was much better at least in the steering department. I wonder now if IIDTool can help modify some settings for the steering.
I took delivery of a new RR Sport P440e just 3 months ago and totally agree with every aspect of your review. I absolutely love the jeep but the fidgety suspension is the one thing that irritates me about the driving experience . I also have a 2007 Sport and it rides much better over a local bumpy road .
Great review, I’ve now had 2 of these a hybrid and latterly a D300, if honest I prefer the Diesel. Find it effortless to drive and responsive when needed. Btw heated seats standard in rear. Very fair review and agree with the majority of your comments.
Totally agree with you about the steering. The spring analogy is the perfect way to describe it. It’s the same issue on the my 2021 discovery 5. I much prefer the steering on my 2008 Range Rover.
Good review, especially regarding the specific issues mentioned about the car. I recently became the owner of a Range Rover Sport. With regard to the suspension, it essentially comes down to a compromise engineered by the manufacturer. You simply can't have everything. The only exception is Ferrari, which, with its adjustable damping and manettino, creates an unparalleled combination of driving performance and comfort. As for the heavy steering, I think Range Rover should explain why this choice was made, because ultimately it feels artificial. There seem to be two possibilities: either the front end is not well-engineered enough and with stronger power steering, the car wouldn't drive straight, or it is inspired by the lane assistance system. I think it's the latter. I have now driven 400 km, and with the lane assistance on, you have the problem much less. I think with a more power-assisted steering, the corrections from the lane assistance would be too severe. In any case, there is a reason for this choice.
I think the ride for cars at these price is a selling factor for me. It’s a shame this has this ride. I know he called the wheels ‘not too big’ and yet their 22’s, but these must be the smallest looking 22’s ever as the sidewall is so large for this size of a wheel. I know someone that has a hybrid first edition with 23’s and that must be bad. 48 mpg is mental. The most Iv got in my evoque D200 is about 50 and that was driving slow, like cruising at 50 for a long time. I also like the feature of the hugely powerful sound system, even as an option in the base model. Great video!
Just chanced on your channel and I like your style bud 👍 as mentioned below, no airs and graces Harry Metcalfe style, and an honest admission that you drive an old Volvo like many of us peasants. It boils my piss when so many car journos get uppity and unappreciative about cars they would never ever fork out their own money for in real life, even if they could, which they can't.
The suspension works like that on the old LRs too :) Also if you ride slow it starts to be loose and shakes on sole road inperfections. Even that LRS are gread rides :) The calibration is based on streering weel sensorm, air suspension sensors and speed i think. Based on this tree thing it messures how to callibrate.
Lovely car. From the vid the interior does seem to be overly grey. Was there enough contrast in the flesh? I like RR interiors for the excellent combination of materials and contrast
Lovely looking motor and I’d have one in a heartbeat but the depreciation that’s inevitable of these and the fact I’d be forever frightened it would be taken from me as I sleep or when it’s parked up means that level of worry is just too big to take. Let’s hope they have figured out the security of these I suspect not.
Good review. I have seen quite a lot of these now and feel that some colours really suit the design and some really dont. All the lines and details blend in to nothing on the black ones.
I thought I was going mad as I had exactly the same steering issue in P440e and sent to dealer who checked and said it was fine and normal … it’s great engine so powerful but yeah it’s so tiring on long journey. A defender P400 130 I drove had amazing steering in comparison
I could be wrong but I don’t think Audi support Apple car play in the second display (behind the steering wheel).. they just display Apple Maps within their in house Audi maps function allowing Google maps to appear on both screens
To fix all your crits Joel - just hit the ‘Dynamic’ button and it transforms the car (or spec in the ‘Stormer’ option - and it puts you into a different dimension of driving…..
I took delivery of a Sport last week and now know exactly what your'e saying about the steering. Its going back tomorrow for them to try and sort the steering out. Here's hoping they can do something about it.
@@itsjoel They took it in last week and found some of the base electronic setting out of spec. After some rejigging it seems much improved. Definatly much easier kept in the centre of the lane on the motorway. Lets hope it stays that way.
Great review, my Sport has black wheels in my opinion they suit the car, but I guess it depends on the colour of the car, mine is Satin / matte balmoral blue
Jlm maps are actually very very good if you have data. No difference from Apple or Google. You need to have one and drive it for about a year maybe. It makes you approach it a lot more
Lovely car and when I win the lotto I'll beat a path to my local dealer. But in the meantime I'm still happy with my top of the range Skoda Yeti 4x4, it's a brilliant car. I use it off road quite a bit as I shoot clays every week and go all over the place.
Just the level of trim you have. Even my previous model plug in hybrid has heated seats at the back. Is the review comparing it to its previous model, to its big brother or general SUVs around that price mark?
The steering is actually pretty good, when increasing speed its getting stiffer that's the point so at the high speeds the car stays stable at the straight line and no steering needs to be done. Stiff means sporty that's why this model called sport.
Good review, thanks. I totally agree with the ride quality comments you made. I think it might be because of them trying to make it sportier and failing in it. Comparing this to a BMW X5, the Range Rover Sport loses on every aspect as a car, the X5 is even more quiet, the suspension is a lot better tuned, it's comfortable and in sport mode the BMW takes corners a lot better, the engine sounds better, pulls better and has more instant reaction from the gearbox, it just wins in every category except... the feeling of the car. There's just this "civilized truck" feeling in the Ranger Rover compared to the over grown sedan feeling in an X5.
Great video Joel! Love your honesty and this detailed review... epic! What are your thoughts around depreciation on the new Sport? For me as someone who has been looking at one of these as a new car, given the much higher starting costs, long wait times for a specified build and way over list pricing for dealer demo vehicles in Australia I ordered a Porsche Macan GTS instead, but when the car world normalises one day the Sport will likely come back on the shopping list...
Ive got one in grey, it’s absolute dog 💩. Been back to the garage 3 times already with major engine issues. Can’t wait to get out of it and back to an XC90 which I had before and had not one issue. If you are on the fence don’t do it 👍
I agree with you about the heavy steering feel, it does become tiring of long journeys. They need to do something about it. Their Engineers need to try it for real.
I am glad this still as buttons for the heating and like you said manufacturers need to bring back more buttons, the new updated evoque they have done away with the heating controls to me thats a backward step , yes looks clean but for me dont want to take my eyes off the road to just adjust the heating. Why why as RR done this bad move on the evoque. Love the RR sport I own a older evoque but would love to own the sport either this or still dont mind the older model.
Those excellent dials are gone from MY24... all touchscreen. It's the wrong move IMO. They've removed them on the Range Rover, Sport, Velar, Evoque and Discovery Sport.
I can’t agree with this review. The steering is absolutely fine. And to say that it would put you off and you’d go to a bmw is just wrong. I’d say well done to JLR for making such an amazing world beating and world leading car.
Totally agree over the suspension, Joel! Range Rover used to be wafting around, nowadays, they just don’t. The full size is a lot better than the Sport for sure, but the previous ones, were just… better. They continue to be one of the best, but now, I just think that the XC90 (2016-, with air suspension) is the most comfy SUV, just behind the full size Range Rover (that costs 2 times more). And then, X7. But the Range Sport, isn’t there anymore. What a pity.
I must say 2 things in particular. 1 - when range rovers of the past were released, all the way back to the l322 when i was 12 years old, i instantly loved and wanted one. This l461 definately doesnt give me that emotion 2 - that touch screen is riddled with fingerprints, which would forever be an issue for me. Weirdly, my l322 with the 1st of the touch screen shows no finger prints, then the last of the l322 with the newer touch screen, which i also own, does show finger prints!
@@itsjoel The new Range Rover and the Sport are now built on the same wheelbase. The Sport is identical in wheelbase to the Range Rover, (except the Long Wheel base version).
@@itsjoel I own an old Sport, and want to change for more room (family of 6' golfers). When I looked at all the comparisons between the new Sport and new Range Rover, I was surprised to see that the interior space is the same, and the rear trunk on the "full size" Range Rover is actually smaller. I agree that the new RR is taller, but headroom is already great. Having a bigger body on the RR would add no benefit to passengers or luggage capacity, but make the car more difficult to park and cost a heck of alot more
Exaggerating very much on the long drive. I actually got that because of my very very long miles I drive on the motorway. I had the 2021 version and I have ordered the 2024 just because it is so so good on very long drives at high speeds. You don’t even feel the car is at very high speeds. I am currently refer to the 2021 version and waiting on the new one. But I can’t believe JLR have deteriorated the car? Mmmm don’t believe. Remember all the bad reviews I watched before I got the 2021 when it came out and realised they were all exaggerations! Waiting for my new one!

Do the brakes for the l460 require replacement every 10 to 15k miles? I hear the rear steering reduce rear brake life.
Not as far as I know, I've covered about 18k in mine and it's about to go in for a service, so we shall see.
The ride on the 461 was enough to stop me buying one. Low speed ride on rough surfaces is terrible for a luxury SUV on air suspension.

I absolutely love the jeep but the fidgety suspension is the one thing that irritates me about the driving experience . I also have a 2007 Sport and it rides much better over a local bumpy road .
Went with the full size 2023. My dealer in Alberta, Canada has 27 in inventory. They are offering $8500 discount + loyalty rate of 5.99% on leases.
Was this Edmonton or Calgary?
Great review, I’ve now had 2 of these a hybrid and latterly a D300, if honest I prefer the Diesel. Find it effortless to drive and responsive when needed. Btw heated seats standard in rear. Very fair review and agree with the majority of your comments.
Totally agree with you about the steering. The spring analogy is the perfect way to describe it. It’s the same issue on the my 2021 discovery 5. I much prefer the steering on my 2008 Range Rover.
Glad it’s not just me going mad!
Great video as ever! You're smashing it Joel!
We have one in this colour too, LOVE IT.
Good honest review Joel I certainly enjoyed it
Just chanced on your channel and I like your style bud 👍 as mentioned below, no airs and graces Harry Metcalfe style, and an honest admission that you drive an old Volvo like many of us peasants.
Glad I heard about the suspension before I got a sport.
Let me know if they can sort it out!
@@itsjoel They took it in last week and found some of the base electronic setting out of spec. After some rejigging it seems much improved. Definatly much easier kept in the centre of the lane on the motorway. Lets hope it stays that way.
@@JamesAnderson-kd4to hello just purchased a 2023 rrs and having same issue. did it fix the issue permanently, thanks
@@doboth90 Yes, its six months now and the wooden steering issues havent returned. All good, so it is fixable.
It makes you approach it a lot more
At 5:47 the center display does look very filthy. That's the problem with those shiny black materials. But... nice car and good review!
How is the steering. The older one was stiff.)
How is the steering. The older one was stiff.
Currently driving Audi SUV
Surely it’s expected that the sport would have stiffer suspension than the standard model?
I own one and they have an issue with the Wind Noise; its really bad!
Having not setup your air suspension for comfort and using 21 ' rims, you would feel the bumps.
Ive got one in grey, it’s absolute dog 💩. Been back to the garage 3 times already with major engine issues. Can’t wait to get out of it and back to an XC90 which I had before and had not one issue. If you are on the fence don’t do it 👍
Do the review on the plug-in hybrid which charges 73miles
You can use a device as long as you’re not holding it in your hand, so the law allows a dashboard or windscreen mount.
I agree with you about the heavy steering feel, it does become tiring of long journeys. They need to do something about it. Their Engineers need to try it for real.
hello was you able to get yours sorted in the end, thanks
Subscribed. Proper review
At last, someone who knows Black wheels dont do on everything !! Thank you
A perfect car...I'd have it over a full size RR because that one is too big for UK roads, car parks, etc.
Great honest review ❤
If you're going to want me to watch a video which you said was in the right side of the screen at least put it there! 🤣 great review
Does the D300 sufer crank failure
Do you know anything about Land Rovers?!
@billybob1511 i own a 3.6 sport
can't imagine you driving that, Wafting along listening to RAMMENSTEIN!!
Rammstein, Linkin Park, Asking Alexandria and Disturbed were blaring the entire time I had the car 😈
is it just me or did the suspension creak and squeak on a car with less than 3000miles on the clock?
I can’t agree with this review. The steering is absolutely fine. And to say that it would put you off and you’d go to a bmw is just wrong. I’d say well done to JLR for making such an amazing world beating and world leading car.
I love it. Pity I can’t insure it where I live.
Fridge isn’t standard on SE.
Fridge isn’t standard on an autobiography either!!
Fridge isn’t standard on an autobiography either!
Thanks for your insight! Glad it’s not me just being silly!
Is it an air suspension?
Yes
Keep it as I would much prefer a previous model for less than 15k
Soft close doors I remember the one I was in didn’t have.
I must say 2 things in particular.
1 - when range rovers of the past were released, all the way back to the l322 when i was 12 years old, i instantly loved and wanted one. This l461 definately doesnt give me that emotion
2 - that touch screen is riddled with fingerprints, which would forever be an issue for me.
Weirdly, my l322 with the 1st of the touch screen shows no finger prints, then the last of the l322 with the newer touch screen, which i also own, does show finger prints!
Great video all round! Poor parents.
Superb review
You can be prosecuted for using your in car touch screen while driving.
Insurance quotes far too much , great Vid
Aren't Range Rover dealerships full of broken down vehicles awaiting parts on backorder?
It’s illegal to be distracted while driving, so using your screen is the same as your phone.
I often have to look twice not sure if range rover or kia.
It's far too plain looking looks the same as any other modern car
why keep comparing to "the full size"... when it is now an identical platform. Same size.
The L460 is larger than the sport.
@@itsjoel The new Range Rover and the Sport are now built on the same wheelbase. The Sport is identical in wheelbase to the Range Rover, (except the Long Wheel base version).
@@leightri yes, but the dimensions are different. The L460 is longer, wider and taller.
Having a bigger body on the RR would add no benefit to passengers or luggage capacity, but make the car more difficult to park and cost a heck of alot more
Will keep my l405
Too much about cosmetics…. Tell us about the H/L gear option, which engines, how far on battery alone, 23» or 21» wheels ??????
steering is real problem, i have just bought one , and am bitterly disappointed , what ever you do drive one first!
Can the steering feel be adjusted? It’s a fairly common feature.
was you able to sort this with the dealer in the end, thanks
Exaggerating very much on the long drive. I actually got that because of my very very long miles I drive on the motorway. I had the 2021 version and I have ordered the 2024 just because it is so so good on very long drives at high speeds. You don’t even feel the car is at very high speeds. I am currently refer to the 2021 version and waiting on the new one. But I can’t believe JLR have deteriorated the car? Mmmm don’t believe. Remember all the bad reviews I watched before I got the 2021 when it came out and realised they were all exaggerations! Waiting for my new one!
It's a sport suspension harder
Air suspension is bad at quick bumps.
Kudos to you for black rim dislike .... makes any car looks dirty...
Every little fingerprint visible; it would drive me mad!
Donk….. low profile tyres don’t help.
Very nice motor, pity they are so easy to steal.😱😱
Looks fantastic but am sorry 💯 to get stolen And breakdown
You’re like a fart Joel. Once you watch one video you cannot stop watching more
RIP greenhouse windows
I love it
