The taller boxer should have used his Jab more- and not in the pawing manner- a real stiff power jab to keep you at bay- or use it as a quick blinding yard stick to immediately follow with the cross. You showed great movement and speed- he showed great inexperience and confusion+fear...He froze n let you in his range and missed when he tried countering. Outclassed.

    • @berserk3380

Good fight! The problem with peekaboo styles in amateur fights is that head guards and 16oz gloves means that its hard to really get respect from your opponent thus it usually results in fighters just volume punching as they know they are protected by the head guards and amateur scoring system doesn't value sustained pressure and more significant punches. Keep up the good work never the less

This was pretty good considering you taught yourself. Something to remember is that “blind-siding” is an essential part of the style. Basically just being able to very quickly put yourself in a position where your opponent physically cannot hit you, while you’re in an excellent position to connect on them. Watch more Tyson footage, as I’m sure you already do, but with the focus on observing all the little details when Tyson does this. The idea is to be able to comfortably execute the speed when “popping in” either side of your opponent, and immediately firing off before they can react. When you watch Tyson shadow box, you see him do these movements where he quickly “snaps“ to immediately face his left, let off shots, then switch to his right, and so on. This is an exercise related to what I’m talking about, because this is the type of movement he makes in order to pop in and then face his opponent’s side. You don’t see many people do it these days, so if you were able to execute it fast enough it’s an extremely useful weapon to add to your arsenal. Obviously it’s pretty difficult, while I don’t attempt to use D’Amato’s style I do practice blind-siding because of how effective it is when you can execute it properly. You really just have to nail the snappy footwork, then add the speed, like with most things, because obviously if you are even slightly too slow your opponent will tend to just move with you, or try to catch you coming in and punish you with a well-timed shot. It’s the type of movement where if you’re caught coming in to blind-side, it can be pretty bad, you’re potentially adding enough to turn an average shot they took into something that’ll end the fight. Not good, trust me. That’s the thing about real peek-a-boo, it’s more likely to just get you hurt if you aren’t extremely well versed in it because technically you really can’t learn authentic peek-a-boo from anyone except former students of the Catskills gym. Last I checked, George Young had returned there to train, but that was several years ago and I haven’t seen an update to their RUclips since. It’s such a particular style with details that most people don’t catch, and they tend to misunderstand it in one way or another. There’s details upon details that are very difficult to pick up on if your only source is footage. Also, beware all the trainers and other people on RUclips attempting to teach the style. I’m sure you’ve seen some of them, they’re a dime a dozen and usually aren’t a good place to get information regarding the style. There’s a few decent ones, but you’re better off watching training and demonstrations from Teddy Atlas, or one of the guys who also trained under Cus with Tyson. Look up the guy I mentioned, George Young, there’s videos of him training a little girl at the actual Catskills gym. It isn’t the greatest reference, but is still valuable if you pay attention and listen to what he tells her. Unfortunately teaching yourself a style almost nobody uses puts you at a great disadvantage against most opponents with a style that their trainer knows how to help them adjust and perfect, and which drills will be most useful to you. You miss out, you most likely won’t have a trainer familiar with a willie-bag and its corresponding numbers. When you and your trainer use a Willie-bag, he can get you used to reacting to the punches he calls out with numbers. This is extremely useful and was used by Tyson and Rooney so that Rooney could call out specific combos to Tyson with the numbers when he saw the perfect opportunity, and the other fighter and trainer wouldn’t understand what was being called out, therefore they have no idea how to react because all they know is “something’s coming”. You seem comfortable fighting this way, and one of the most important things in boxing is using a style that not only suits you and your body type, but one that you are comfortable with. My trainer very quickly had to make me understand this when in the beginning I did what TONS of other kids who loved Tyson did and consistently tried to fight out of a peek-a-boo-like stance because I liked it so much. However, as my trainer explained, my body type and other factors made it a bad fit for me, and although it was fairly comfortable, it wasn’t comfortable enough to help allow it become second mature to me. Many trainers in gyms across the country have at least a couple stories of training a new kid that kept wanting to “fight like Tyson”. I’ll just close this essay by saying that I don’t know how serious you are about pursuing boxing further, but if you have the intention of taking it as far as possible, you’re going to run into problems. Eventually you’ll be up against guys that just have advantages over you because you depend on yourself and limited resources to influence your style and your trainer is only able to help you so much. He won’t have knowledge of the various drills, exercises, combinations, or other details which are important for a trainer to know so you can get the most out of each other. Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not trying to discourage you pursuing boxing, I just think you should seriously consider how far you can really go using a style that makes your trainer less effective and you can’t learn enough about because you must depend on a limited amount of footage of the style in use. Tyson, Patterson, and Torres all put the style to use in their own way, and you can watch their footage, but it simply isn’t enough. Myself and others who admired the style started out learning the essentials while fighting from typical modern stances for orthodox fighters, and over time after learning the fundamentals VERY well and many rounds of sparring where we could learn our strengths and weaknesses more intimately, were adapted our styles which then became our own. I learned that I could use aspects of peek-a-boo, like consistent head movements and blind-siding, while still keeping the way i fought very much mine and my trainer’s. In the end though, do what works and brings you success, just don’t hesitate to adapt if you begin to suffer because of the choice of style. It can happen like this, or be as simple as someone’s style just not being the right fit for their body-type and not making use of things like a longer reach in favor of wanting to be an inside-fighter despite not having any of the strengths typical of such fighters. Long story long, good luck to you man, don’t let fear control you, embrace fear and become familiar with your own psychology and how best to become a stronger, more capable boxer. You have promise as a fighter, so remember that it’s all or nothing. Boxing isn’t something you can have one foot in and the other out, be ready to give everything you have. This could be the beginning of something beautiful for yourself.

Thats a big ass text lmao. Thanks for your advices. I've been boxing for 6 years now with a one year break because of knees surgery. I love this style and use it a lot but I have my own style too so dont worry. But I still think you can become successful with only this style, and even if you dont have no Kevin Rooney or D'amato in your corner. We have the chance to have some quite good footage about boxing and a lot of tips on it from Catskills guys on YT. Dont worry Ive seen the vids about George Young the day they came out years ago lol. I dont play boxing and altough my journey is not similar to a Ryan Garcia or Tyson with success early on I still will be a champion soon enough. Life plays out different for everyone but everything is possible my friend. cheers

Typically it's really hard for little guy to go against very tall opponents , you smoothly utilized Damato style to negate his reach , though i expected him to rely on the main card in the tall person's pocket - stiff power jab to keep you at bay , which your opponent for whatever reason never utilized. Anyway you r impressive ! What was the difference? You r like 5'9-5'10 and he probably 6'2-6'3?

Looks perfect only thing that was lacking is the explosive punching power. Just look at mike tyson ...his punch always stagger or knock someone out on a clean hit.
Some may have got the style right, some got the punching power, but you will never find one with both. The reason why this style is almost impossible to imitate is simple. It requires a short physique with wide upper body, and agile/explosive legs for punching power. As well as insane waist and back muscle to weave around from left to right instantly. Without those youre just a tiger without fangs or claws. Still i am impressed by your mastery of the style

Idk how you do it, but slipping in the peakaboo style tends to cause pain at my lower back. Some people say Mike would move his hips, but it's obviously not the case after watching a few matches of his. Maybe the spine isn't designed to take excessive lateral movements.

You’d only have back problems if you bended forward(I’m assuming) your lower back muscles tense up and can’t handle the sudden weight, so in peek-a-boo you use three major movements , u weaves doing a squat (not bending forward),slips to the right and slips to the left.

Did a good job. Homie was struggling to hit your head.
I'm boxing at the moment. Coach is teaching me to be a boxer-puncher. but I'm trying to teach myself Peek-a-boo because it feels a lot more natural for me.
Not a lot of good legit resources out there though
