I’m absolutely loving the fact that the 13 metanium is like 3 models old at this point. You can find them used so cheaply on eBay, it’s amazing. $150...often less. As far as “general purpose” bass reels go, they’re an incredible value. Made in Japan. Light and tightly engineered. Most of them have been owned by serious, older fishermen, so they’re in good shape. And for a ~10 foot deficit vs the mgl, it doesn’t really matter for my purposes. I just don’t do enough distance casting to really feel that. And I wouldn’t throw lighter stuff with it anyway...that stuff goes to my aldes and scorpions. 13 metanium (and soon enough, alde 50..they’re well on the way) is just a great way to load yourself up with super high end shimanos on the cheap. Gotta take advantage before they become “collectors’ items” like the 200e and 50e reels.

Since this video i am now proud owner of 2 metanium 13 and 1 of the metanium 16 love the heck out of them...i am now going to part with some reels and get more metanium's these things are a dream to cast.
Please do a test for met13. Just a few casts of 1/4oz with recent test-rod and good bearings :) Thanks a lot for all your tests

has your metanium mgl 16 gone geary at all? I just bought a used one and is in great condition except it has a geary sound when I reel it. Is the only way to fix this replacing it with a brass main gear?

Were you using the same line and rod for the Chronarch MGL test? I really want to order a JDM Metanium, but I am scared of ordering non domestic. I know it wont have a warranty. I would rather buy a Chronarch on sale here, but the Metanium MGL looks so good. The shallow spool from Japan is a plus too. What would you do?
Yeah same rod and line. Ive never had an issue yet with a reel from Japan. You can get it serviced but you would have to send it back to japan which would be a hassle.
I added a Yumeya BFS spool to my 13 with some Hedgehog Studio bearings and its simply amazing, I also have the Metanium and love it also. Did you know you can swap out the brass gears from the Curado K into the Metaniums?
I didnt know that but Im satisfied with the Metanium gears.. im doing a customization video soon keep an eye out
The good thing about the gear change is brass gives the reel a smoother feel plus its more durable, kinda like the Shimano Calcutta Conquest, I got a few and the 100 size is pretty bad ass, if you don't have one I recommend getting one. instagram.com/p/BE5CVLGqXDR/?taken-by=flexstrops

is this a direct swap? did you leave anything out? i think will try this because my curado k is a 6:2 and prefer that gear...and me and my curado k have love hate relathionship with 10lb line often gets caught in thumbbar on left side....pisses me off to no end
If you had the exact same reel. One from the US and the other JDM (other than the spool size/line capacity) is there a way to tell a difference? Serial numbers etc?

What test line did you use?
THE REEL TEST! You should do a comparison with one of the zpi spools with the magnetic brakes.
too much $$$ lol I do have some ZPI parts ready to dress up my 13 Metanium though, Ill do a video on it, just searching for a handle
THE REEL TEST I have the HH studios HD ceramics on both my Metanium 13s. Those I think should yield some good results
Are you seeing a distance increase? those bearings run $50 with shipping lol.. i see they used regular sized balls instead of the micro balls of the airs..
THE REEL TEST I would think so for the distance increase but have no real measure of testing like you do. More so easier casting effort for skipping and pitching where you can ease off the power you put into that skip/pitch.
any tips to make my 13 metanium get more casting distance? Debating on swapping to the white breaks from the red ones.
I cut off almost whole breaking unit, leaving only two breaks+ drilled 16 holes. Less than 10 grams (with 32 additional holes) -10.5 grams(16holes). And also you can buy hedgehog micro hibrid or hibrid speed bearings
Sure, only white ones (2 of them or combinatoin of red and white) and put some very fast oil on breaking disk then whipe it around by your finger without pushing

If you are using the MGL and you engage 2 breakshoes, do engage them side by side or opposite each other??
I usually do opposite
Opposite works better for me
FYI, 13 Metanium is a 100 line capacity, JDM Metanium MGL is a 70 line capacity and USDM Metanium MGL is a 150 line capacity.
I thought that MGL spool was shallower lol, glad my eyes still work
THE REEL TEST actually I think the 13 is a 150 and the mgl is 100. US version is 150 as he stated
chitown is actually correct, shimano japan says the MGL is a 70 line capacity, and I know the 13 is a 100. Ill be doing a MGL battle soon and compare spools

Just an fyi, theres a bearing under the spool tension knob. So theres 3 for the spool.. you had mentioned that you where unsure where the extra bearing was.. excellent videos all of them.
Thats incorrect. Shimano moved the spool bearing from under the tension cap put it on the spool as the Silent Tune bearing. There are still only 4 bearings on the spool shaft axis. The extra bearing is on the main shaft.
zen bassr i took the knob off and theres a bearing in there and 1 on the spool and one in the side plate.. wait r we talking about the mgl or the 13? Metanium..
MGL. When you take the spool tension knob off the bearing you see is the xship pinion bearing. press the thumbar and you will see the pinion shaft makes no contact with that bearing.

I use the same rod for all the 1/4oz plug tests

Ok just wondering I found one for $184 and didn’t know it that was too high for a reel that old
it will still outperform most reels today, so if its in great condition it may be a deal

Do you like the metanium mgl or the aldebaran better for just all around fishing?

I cant decide which one been doing alot of research on them, which one do you think will last longer?
@Nathan Garvey nothing perfect in life but when buy good reels i hardly doubt you will outlive the reel...i still have the curado bantam and pretty much every curado made and none have ever failed me
The MGL looks so disgusting. (very nice) You could spot one from across the lake. Good thing we wear sunglasses.
With the drilled spool, It would be nice if Shimano could direct the drain hole away from your hand, so your left glove doesn't get as wet in freezing temps.

Definitely, the 13 Metanium is still better than 99% of reels out there

THE REEL TEST your right about that. I had the 13 Matanium and replaced it with the new MGL Matanium but the 13 still blows away pretty much 99% of the competition.
Metanium dc 15 vs MGL?
I dont have a metanium DC
I have both the metanium dc 15 and MGL, the MGL definitely outcast the DC 15 easily by 10-12 yards.
Im surprised at it outcasting by that far. I still want a Metanium DC though

double bearing supported drive gear,13 metan has bearing+bushing drive gear.
both have the x ship double bearing pinion, but the MGL uses the silent tune bearing as spool shaft support instead of a bearing under the cast control cap like the 13.
