I really enjoyed Quantumania, but I can also agree with the critiques mentioned here. I feel the aim for this movie was more about throwing Scott into a situation that is way more dire than he's ever been in before and how to really be the hero he's been talking himself up as, especially with Cassie essentially calling him out on it beforehand.
It does feel like at this point people are going into things ready to be cynical. Ready to nitpick anything and everything because it's a Marvel movie and we all hate Marvel movies now because Hollywood's been running the cinematic universe approach into the ground. Not to say these films shouldn't be treated critically or be immune to criticism, but when it crosses into never-ending cynicism it really sucks the fun out of everything, from watching things to even trying to discuss them.

@CzechXicans I'm a woman of color in my mid-40s and I love you guys. Your talk about the nerd version of dick measuring had me laughing out so hard. And "You don't like She Hulk? IT'S NOT FOR YOU!" 😂😂😂 I appreciate your positivity and that you recognize how toxic masculinity exists and it sometimes tries to push out those who weren't traditionally the audience for comics. I love comics and I also deserve to be part of this landscape!

Around an hour y'all talk about the toxic fandom. As a women who loves the MCU, Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate (you should watch this one, lol, its old but good), etc. I despise these questions. If I wear an Ahsoka shirt: How did she get her white sabers? In episode 42 of season 67 what did she do to that random alien? It gets so old so quickly. Can't I just love the shows and characters? What do I have to prove? One of the things I love about y'all is the maturity, inclusivity, not being afraid to say you didn't like it (without being childish), and calling out the bullshit. Okay that's more than one, but it's great to listen to your conversations and go "I could have a beer with the CzechXicans and have an awesome time and great conversation" A conversation where maybe we don't agree, but the discussion about the disagreement would not turn into a pissing match, it would be a good discussion. Anyways, I ramble. Thank you for bringing awareness.

Ya i wish the movies were a little darker and serious, atleast some of them especially the one introducing the next badguy. Also, it seems like they plan on showing him alot more then they did Thanos. One thing they could do is keep Kang as the "Main Villian" but bring it an even bigger one for the last couple movies.

@@nkxseal8398 seems like its the case. Kang is probably the multiversal distraction for heroes and us and Doom will be the big bad of Secret Wars, that jumps in when Kang fails, so it could be a double plot twist. People proably expect Kang to win in Kang Dynasty like Thanos did in Infinity War. I think Kang will lose, but so will heroes. Then Doctor Doom jumps in and takes over, leading to Secret Wars.

I'm going to just add this part. I saw Into the Spider-verse three times at the theater, and the very first viewing it was a late afternoon showing opening week. Barely half full theater, and there was like an old couple, mother & daughter and a handful of young adults. Let's just say everybody was laughing at everything. And you can hear they understood the different art styles and the different concepts.
But my second viewing I went to a different theater and it was full, late at night with parents & kids and the mood was way low and hardly anyone was laughing. That experience sucked because I brought somebody with me after I spent a couple days hyping up the movie.

Love the convo on the state of the MCU. I do think the MCU has become a weird punching bag. Like now the public loves Incredible Hulk and Age of Ultron now just to punch down on phase 4/5. I don't believe in Superhero fatigue. We've blown through multiple Batmen and The Batman did really well. The Flash trailer broke records, Across The Spider-Verse has hype. People still love this stuff.

Exactly. MCU didn’t really become popular until phase 3. That’s the phase that had multiple billion dollar box office films. Everyone conveniently forgets how lots of movies in phase 1/2 weren’t liked all that well. So this “drop in quality” argument for phase 4 always seemed odd to me.

I love this form of forum from you guys. You can be honest and critical without trashing a project. I had a different experience when watching Antman and The Wasp Quantumania. The beginning was fine, Janet shined more than I expected, and the biggest bright light of this movie for me was Jonathan Majors. For all the criticism this movie is getting from people, I have yet to run across anyone who noticed the ending. For the first time in all the Marvel movies I have seen, I have never felt more dread at the end of any of those movies then I did at the end of Quantumania. Like something was terribly wrong with the world Scott came back to. When the movie started everything was red or neutral colors because of Antman. But when he got back from the quantum realm why was everything purple and green? Love watching you guys and I look forward to your next videos.

It's always a good day when there is a new CzechXicans episode! Congrats again on getting the 100K plaque! I'm with Agustin on Antman Quantumania. I also thought about a Kang and Janet relationship, but based on what happened in Loki, they are saving Kang's "love interest" to be Ravonna Renslayer, which I thought would make an appearance in this movie. It would have connected things better and given more of a reason to Kang for wanting to get out of the Quantum Realm. I also thought Hope was going to die when she went back to save Scott. Not that it's mandatory to have death of a "good" character, but it felt like everyone was "saved" and the stakes were not as high as I expected--with the MCU building up Kang as the "big bad" of the post-Endgame phase. BTW, 100% with you on the topic of "super hero fatigue"! Preach, homies! *Totally love this conversational, long discussion to review movies. Keep it going! EDIT: Do a watch-along of M3gan, please!

I really enjoyed Quantumania - I think it was better than the last Thor, and much better than the last Dr. Strange. Jonathan Majors was terrifying as Kang (which is why I loved M.O.D.O.K as the comedic relief.) I also felt that Janet was so traumatized that she would not speak about Kang, or her experiences.
Also the flip-flopping is really frustrating - as well.

27:00 when do we criticize and when is it okay if VFX isn't perfect or great? It's pretty easy actually and your The Last of Us examples work great for that, it all comes down to the emotions. Nobody cared about the fake horse because we we're shocked by Joel being hurt and thrilled by Ellie shooting at the raiders. We we're also shocked and emotionally invested in Ellie and Joel when he fell from the horse. We didn't notice the bad VFX or special effects because our brain was busy processing emotions.
We notice bad CGI, VFX and whatever, when our brain has nothing else to cling on, or when it's bored.
Ant-Man failed at the same things a lot of phase 4 movies also failed at, it wasn't a real life backround story, that made us connect with it.
We connect with Tony Stark because we all struggle and want to be better and do good, yet we feel like never being good enough. You don't have to be an alcoholic to understand what he's going through in Iron man 2, you understand his struggle. If you watch Guardians of the Galaxy 1, you see them finding some sort of family, you see them becoming something better and fullfiling their potential, when they're together. We haven't seen anything real like that in a while in the MCU.
It's more about spectacel and hype right now, that's why a $250mio movie like Multiverse of Madness is somehow a worse multiverse movie than the $14.3-25 mio Everything Everywhere All at Once, it needs to be about heart, not about big box office money. So if you guys say that not every Marvel movie can be a Endgame or Infinity War, I totally agree with you and it shouldn't be. The problem is, the MCU tries to get hype like Endgame with every movie now.

First, I’m very glad that I learned that you guys are doing this too (just subscribed) but I have cerebral palsy health issues that cause me to be in the hospital a lot and on bed rest (and I live alone) and love watching your watch alongs after I watch the marvel movies and shows. I feel like I’m hanging out and watching with friends. Second, Can you imagine if Thor’s dyed eyebrows happened today?! 🤣 A lady at my doctors office raves about how she’s a huge marvel fan and when I told her that I had seen and loved Quantumania, she scoffed and rolled her eyes and said that she hadn’t even HEARD of Ant-Man, she said “That sounds so stupid.” (I can’t imagine not even giving Paul Rudd a shot!… But I had to explain who Paul Rudd was. Lol) These critics aren’t very different. There’s a supervisor that says I don’t care if it’s not your deal, it’s popular, and the two things that gets them to click most are spoilers and criticism. P.S. Hope’s kickass philanthropy was epic!! Can you imagine Luis as like her “social outreach PR guy/hype man?! Talking circles around the politicians and getting them to agree! Lol. The Isaiah Bradley storyline, RiRi quoting Chadwick’s acceptance speech “To be young, gifted and black”… These moments in the MCU mean so much and where are the op-eds about that? Anyway, The same people that always complain about the mcu differing from comics drive me bonkers. I hate that magneto all of a sudden realized that he’s not the father, but I definitely wouldn’t change what the MCU has done with the Yelena/Natasha relationship or M’baku’s character whatsoever. Emo Toby/Peter didn’t make anyone refuse to see No Way Home! P.S. please look up the side by side of the little kid doing the dance from Spider-Man 3… it’s everything! 🤣 Anyway, I didn’t love the first avatar, but I also realize that maybe the wheelchair thing bugged me more than it should and maybe rewatching it now that I’m older, will be totally different. I would never dissuade someone from enjoying it. I don’t understand feeling the need to pick apart things just because they are beloved.

Since they decided to make this whole universe where they want you to watch the TV shows and watch the movies and one matters to the other then I think it is on them to put out a quality product and each is individually judged.

Hector has a point that "She-Hulk" was directed to a specific audience, however it needed to be much funnier if it was a comedy in any sense. I have no idea why they did not utilize the most comedic character in the MCU, Luis. Particularly since his character was going to be a total no-show in the AntMan3. Even I can write in parts for Luis that would have been much better than the immortal or other of the more lame characters. Luis could have been involved as a co-host of Scott's podcast. I would have made sure that either Luis, Wong or Matt Murdock was in every episide.

We have on one hand these expansive, developed visions that include all these massive scenes from the people who are writing and coming up with them, etc but they seem to have very little concern for the budgets they are being given to pull it all off.

I really enjoyed Quantumania- I've always liked the humor in the Ant-Man movies, and I even got my mom to watch it with me cause Ant-Man is one of her favorites. We were cracking up laughing through a lot of the movie- I had to pause the movie when MODOK appeared because I was laughing so hard and my mom was like what on earth is that!?
I think one thing that has really helped my enjoyment of Marvel movies lately is that I stopped watching trailers. I watched the trailers for No Way Home and I feel like it basically gave away most of the movie, and even made me enjoy it a little less as a result, because I already knew a lot of what to expect. So starting with Dr. Strange 2, I stopped watching trailers and it has made such a difference! Had no idea MODOK, Bill Murray, and William Jackson Harper were in this, which were all pleasant surprises (or in the case of MODOK at least an entertaining surprise!). All I knew going in was that it's about the quantum realm and Kang's the villain.

For me what is most disappointing about phase 4 has nothing to do with the big swings, or the the undercooked CGI, but more about how the writing in most of these projects don't feel like they were fully realised before they were filmed. So much of the criticism I feel is valid. So much of it feels like they were created/written on the fly, and the stories feel secondary to the release dates. They feel really shallow, and unfortunately makes most of us feel less invested in the characters. The slow down is definitely warranted, to give the characters the care they deserve. Much cudos to all whe worked on these films, but I feel the time crunch has unfairly resulted in subpar final products. All in my opinion of course, as a long time comic and MCU fan

While I agree that Dr Strange needs to be arrogant, he hasn’t really had an arch. Wanda’s arch seemed strangely uneven. Did Scott even learn anything in Quantumania? Oh yeah. Kang.
I think a lot of it has to do with how quickly the projects were made and how crowded the roster is now. They had a lot of introductions to make. Now we will start seeing more journeys the characters make.

To be fair, a lot of people seem to forget we all went through a 2+ year (almost 3 years and counting) Covid-19 pandemic that derailed a lot of projects (Marvel or otherwise) and these studios had to make do with the hand that was dealt to them--not to mention devastating events like Chadwick Boseman's passing. Some MCU movies and series had to be re-arranged and edited immensely just due to actor availability (some actors were stuck in other countries and justifiably could not/would not travel during the pandemic). In my opinion, it's commendable they even got to release any projects in 2021 and pretty much release all that they had in the pipeline for Phase 4 (and now into Phase 5). I was so relieved and taken out of "panic mode" when WandaVision was released in January 2021, it was a huge breath of "normalcy" to start watching a project I and many others had been eagerly waiting for. It's ok not to like something, but there is just a fad now to shit-post and shit-review as click-bait. Did I love every single thing out of the MCU post-Endgame, definitely not? Was any of it "trash", absolutely not! I enjoyed every project to varying degrees.

Maybe that's still Chapeks fault when he installed his committee who had no idea haw to run run a filmstudio they only cared for money and to fix that takes time. Why should I go to the cinema and pay 15 to 20 bucks to see a movie which I can see for free in 3 4 months. BTW I find it funny that Hollywood is a union town but the VFX artists are not unionized.

The "franchise fatigue" issue is such a non-starter...
    Its 3-ish movies a year.
Thats like 9-ish hours....in a year.... and maybe a couple of TV shows now.
If people are feeling "fatigued" by that...they need to pay less attention to every minute detail of the production process of it all and go find something they enjoy spending their time doing.

For me, an effect has to pull me out of the scene's emotion for me to notice it. I never watch a film to analyze CGI. That a CGI effect is noticeably CGI isn't enough to trigger me. The full Terminator shots in *The Terminator* are noticeably animated. Ed 209 in *Robocop* is the same, very stop-motion animation-looking. I don't care. I enjoy the "strange new worlds" that modern CGI produces. They might not always be perfect, but they're better than fake rocks, purple-painted shrubs, and red "atmosphere" backdrops we were once limited to, or matte paintings that didn't move. If you've you're a sci-fi fan, you learn to look past that stuff

What? So your response to vfx workers having to sleep in their office under terrible working conditions is "Well, marvel's gotta do what they gotta do..."
These guys act like theyre left wing, then have the most corporate-bootlicking take ever.

I don't have a lot to add to the conversation about Ant Man Quantumania, but I will say this: After all the death of beloved characters in Wakanda Forever (losing Chadwick it was bad enough not having that father/son storyline), I couldn't handle another death of a beloved Marvel character. Especially when it comes to the Avengers. I was upset enough that Letitia refused to wear a COVID mask when they were filming, as if it was ok to literally kill off Angela Bassett after losing Chadwick just so she could throw a tantrum about wearing a mask. Then they go and kill off Angela Bassett's character? It feels like they jumped a mile comic book-wise (and I don't even read the books). Trying to deal with an Avenger character death would have been too much, especially since that phase of characters will be over after the last Guardians of The Galaxy movie. For whatever it's worth, I'm glad no one died in this movie. I need a break from all the death.

You naturally break down bad CG when the project is mediocre, stuff like the horse in TLOU gets ignored because the show is so good, you aren't focused on that.

I'm so tired of hearing this idea that the MCU should be given credit for being experimental and "taking swings". I give credit when you hit. If Aaron judge goes up to bat 200 times and swings so hard he flies out of his shoes, but still strikes out 175 times....he's gonna get fired. Fans aren't gonna say, "Well at least he tried".
People just want good movies, which is obviously subjective, but it's not just a vocal minority of 50 people on Reddit criticizing phase 4 and Antman. It's not about getting Endgame level events each time we go to the theater. It's about being engaged in these stories and not just having CG noise thrown at us over and over.

    • @hectorminator
      @hectorminator Год назад +5

This is a flawed comparison because Marvel Studios has not missed "175 times", and the idea behind appreciating a movie studio like Disney/Marvel taking a swing is that more often than not, those kinds of projects stand at bat and just bunt. They play it safe.
So, you can not like Marvel movies all you want, that's fine, but please don't argue that all anyone does is forgive Marvel Studios for making bad movie after bad movie, because that's not what's happening.

Well Marvel before phase 4 was repeatedly criticized for the same thing over and over and now they are experimenting and trying to do things different like the Eternals was nothing like a typical superhero movie and it got trashed because “it’s not a typical superhero movie”.

42:50 - Maybe there are some who think that but I totally disagree. My biggest issue with Eternals is that they forced fit it into MCU. I didn't need to connect and stay something of it's own.
The films are not good, that's it. If antman had no Kang, no setup for future and just a story about a father who missed 5 yrs of his daughter's life YET again, people would have loved it.
I feel a lot of us are in a twitter bubble where minority controls the whole narrative about everything and we just keep going around that in circles instead of focusing on the issues.

I understand that you guys have to run this channel and mcu is good way to earn but you should be honest about something which is not good and that whole talk about Disney funds and VFX artists was just your excuse for covering up a bad movie. Why would a normal movie going person care about the funds and time VFX artists are getting. They wanted to have a good time which they didn't get and this movies Box office and cinema score proved that.

It matters to us, because we used to work in post production, and so we empathize with visual effects artists who are currently working in the industry.
If you want to declare that you don't care about those people, or what they have to go through to help deliver movies you love, then that sounds like a you problem, not an us problem.

When I came out watching antman 3 I was thinking it wasn't bad, I had fun. But the more I thought about it I realised how mediocre the film was. I have no problem if marvel experiments and fails, eternals but to make a routine film and play safe to just make money is unacceptable from Marvel and they have hit the lowest with this film. I hope they learn and bounce back

I personally didn't notice the horse. I only knew about because I saw people talking about it all over the internet. The difference is, Last of Us has a story and characters you care about that makes up for "flaws". If someone doesn't care about anything going on in the plot of Antman, then yeah, they're plot gonna pick away at everything including the visuals.
