I love the box art of this game

I feel like the depth of this game is constantly being understated.
The team building is expressive and with the increase amount of seeds, accessories, armor, and weapons it really brings out the build variety. The combat can be more akin to something like SMT Nocturne when you dont spend so much time grinding and honestly the game being open world makes it so you rarely have to.

I bought the dragon quest 1 2 3 collection and wasn’t going to get this remake until I watched your review. Now I want it.

I loved not having a quest marker. The NPCs give you very precise directions, it was fun exploring and finding things myself. The whole "explore the world and do good and you'll find your way to the orbs" in the middle section of the game feels more natural without quest markers pointing you to them (plus there's some optional stuff I'd probably miss sometime, and not get the levels I needed in Draconian).
Also I think Ultrafast is too fast. It helps speeding things up if you're purely grinding, but during regular play I like playing on fast so I can appreciate the animations.

The hero learns a spell that takes down encounters around level 20ish holy protection or something like that. There's also an item with an identical effect whose name I can't recall.

I wonder if future dragon quest will continue to use Toriyamas style of artwork...

I strongly agree with you about they should have an encounter toggle on/off option. Sometimes it’s overwhelming! It’s mundane always having to flee.

Just a tip: holy water and the thief’s ability padfoot basically make random encounters non existent

1:53 THIS!!! This is why the final fantasy series is so divided. Square is trying to make a hack and slash Final Fantasy while Atlus is just destroying the turn based rpg market

You really speak to my Soul here. I also never touched this series for so many years. Then a good friend of Pierre (you cover his Switch sales data sometimes) recommended to me Dragon Quest XIS. We talked about it for a while till I ordered it. When I started playing it I just felt so warm and cozy. And then after finishing it it became one of my favourite JRPGs of all time. The way you talk about your experiences is just resonating with me very well ^^

One man’s outdated game design is another man’s treasure.
I held off on starting the game for days stressing over class builds. Also what to name the characters. These first three and X obviously are the only ones I haven’t played. Davidvinc RPG says that it did feel like an entirely new game to him despite having played the game a million times over the course of his life.

Got 2 mini medals and handed the whip you get for that to my monster wrangler and he’s insta-killing enemy groups. Grinding to get nose for treasure on my thief so I can go back to the first two towns. Leave no treasure behind! I want that booty.
holy water and padfoot are the closest you’re getting to no enemy encounters in DQ games.

This is my personal GOTY. I did like Yakuza: infinite weath the most so far this year but Dragon Quest 3 to me is way more fun. Here's hoping they do this with Chrono Trigger.

Wish the combat wasn’t in first person. It isn’t a creative choice, it’s a limitation from that time period that we can move past

The reason why Dragon Quest has stayed true to its formula and spirit is because it has been sternly gatekept by Yuji Hori. Just like Final Fantasy once was under Hironobu Sakaguchi (until he left Square).

This game looks cool. It does.
However unfortunately it has no voiceovers.
I grew up most of my life starting with the super Nintendo, and I had to deal with games with no voiceovers.
I'm tired. I'm tired of reading and trying to imagine the personality and character of who I'm talking to rather than actually experiencing it.
For this reason I'm probably never going to play it. To some this may seem ridiculous, but is it? It's for the same reason many people don't read a book and instead listen to an audible.
    Or watching a movie.
I just can't really feel immersed in the story and in the world very well if I'm never hearing the voice to the character that's talking. There's a reason that voice artists who do a fantastic job get awards and are revered.
Being able to experience the personality of a character made manifest is truly magical and sometimes the quality of one's voice work can even make a game great.
This is why I cannot stand Zelda games.
I feel like it's an old thing that hasn't died that some people think people still want, but no one does.
Even someone who says they advocate for no voiceovers and they love reading text for some reason, give them that very same game with amazing voiceovers and see if they turn the voiceovers off and just read instead.
It's copium, nostalgic limitations that they place. I hate fucking reading. I want to hear the character I want to feel their emotion. If I have to imagine their emotion and imagine what that person sounds like can imagine what their character is it makes things different.
Also when you're reading something how you're actually taking that is down to interpretation. Whereas with voiceover work the actual intent by the developers is portrayed in the voice actor.
I fucking hate I fucking hate this stupid reading crap
