Personally my take on him has always been that he wants to use Gordon as a token to get humanity more rights under combine rule, he thinks that there's no chance of ever freeing themselves from the combine, that's why he screams that they need him, he's the only person who's intelligent enough for the combine to recognize. It always interested me that he had direct access to the higher ups, and they even allowed him to use a host body, impling that they see something more than just a puppet.
Well it seems like Breen's fate could be different, having his conciousness moved into an advisor body, one that is in the Episode 1 in citadel and possibly one we face in episode 2. Laidlaw's Breengrub twitter account collaborated to some extend, expanding the half-life universe further. As for his action i think he wanted to save humanity, he was definetly aware of Gman just like Eli was and was guided by him to set things in motion.
according to epistle 3, humans are less than nothing to the Combine, Breen was able to convince them to keep humanity alive to eventually prove themselves worthy of life. Gordon was going to understand that when he would have gone to their overworld, even the Borealis wouldn't have done anything to harm them
I think he's alive, the Advisor that he was talking to said something like does he want to be transformed into a host body, Breen says first the fact that he cannot survive in the U. U. Homeland than after he asks him for a host body he says no but then agrees. So let's move on to Hl2 Ep2 you know the part when Alyx and Gordon meet that Advisor and he put both of them to a wall then picked up a barrel, squishes it and drops it on the ground (that is him testing his powers) the he picks up the dead rebel and takes his memory via tongue. Then goes after Gordon first even tho a normal Advisor would have picked Alyx because she is closer then the Advisor stares at Gordon gets hit by an explosion, puts Gordon back on the wall and just stares at him. Do you think that after being re born and then after a long long time seeing the man who killed you, you wouldn't be shocked? You probably would and all I'm trying to say with my bad english is that the Advisor is Breens new body, why did he squish the barrel, to try his new power, why did he go after Gordon even tho Alyx is closer, because he is the cause of his death. Conclusion: Breen is alive.
If you keep up with Mark Laidlaw's work he actually made a little twitter account awhile ago where he basically outlines both what happens to Breen, as well as what the Advisors are. He does it in character from the perspective of Breen who has had his mind copied into the body of a combine advisor without any of the added technology, just an oversized grub. Unable to move or do much of anything other than think and have his mind twisted and meshed together with the mind of the advisor he now inhabits. He shares memories with that advisor and now knows the entire history of their species and how they came to be a part of the Combine, which he explains vaguely. Long story short Doctor Wallace Breen dies at the end of Half Life 2, but Breen Grub is then born with an exact copy of Breen's consciousness which now has been integrated with the brain of an advisor, meaning he can think like them, and read their thoughts telepathically, and is able to draw from almost an intellectual hivemind similar to the Vortessence the Vortigaunts use. He also arguably hints at what Gman is.
I have to say I disagree with you on Breen actually caring for the people below. Throughout the entirety of Gordon’s time in the citadel Breen continually tries several different tactics to try to get Gordon to turn around. Especially when Gordon is climbing the reactor. Breen saying you need me could also mean a couple of different things. It could just be breens inflated ego or, he’s saying that without him all of humanity will be wiped out by the combine. Not that he’d help the fight against the combine but that he sees himself as a savior and a hero.
Good points. That's the thing about Breen's character, on one side (in this video) I do believe there was some good in him, but on the other hand, all of it might have been just his ways to get Gordon to stop so he can stab in the back later.
I think Breen just sees the utter futility of resistance against an interdimensional juggernaut like the combine. He understands that if Gordan actually manages to disrupt the operations of the combine to a degree that that something as massive as the combine would actually notice they would just cut their losses and annihilate all life on the planet. He sees two futures for humanity, incorporation into the over watch as heavily augmented super soldiers who have been robbed of all memories and free will sent off world to do the bidding of the combine, or extinction. Breen decided the survival of the species mattered more than the retention of the very things that made humans humans in the first place.
Actually you're wrong here in this video, Breen is and was NEVER an anti-hero, he was a complete anti-villain. Sometimes anti-villains get mistaken for anti-heroes typically nowadays but an anti-villain is technically still a villain but with good intentions or a sense of conflicting morals with certain objectives or actions one may consider to be "evil".
I like to think Breen would have his life threatened by the combine if he couldn’t do this, after all he is just a puppet for them, granted he has more rights than the average citizen, but he’s still just a puppet for the combine
It all depends on your perspective! Breen would be an anti-villain to the people suffering in the present, but he would be an anti-hero to the future generations who gain immortality & all the other benefits that Breen was working towards. And if humanity survived for a long time with all those gifts, then Breen would be helping more people than he hurt.
This is the first video I've ever watched from you, and I've been watching your videos whenever they upload since I first subscribed around the time you had 400 subscribers. I've seen you grow so much, your rise from 500 subscribers to almost 50k in 2 years is phenomenal and the only kind I've seen and I'm glad to be here since (almost) the beginning. This video is a true classic, keep up the good work as always.
This is one of my earliest videos when I was still learning how to make them (still am). If I do another video like this I'll use the direct audio file rather than footage audio. Thank you.
Very persuasive, so much so you'd think Breen himself had written it IMO however he's simply self-serving and opportunistic, living in relative luxury and attempting to placate the downtrodden masses with the idea of a character when all they'll ever get is the stick After spending so much effort trying to convince his estranged colleague to come his side he'll immediately dispose of him as soon as a better prospect comes along in the form of Gordon When he talks about the people below yes trying to appeal to *your* compassion and humanity, not out of any personal concern To very end, all he's doing is bargaining for his life, begging to be spared as he's done before
I just might know what he means about the stars. Imagine if the earth was in complete destruction that is hard to miss. However you are taken somewhere that looks like earth before what happened. What I mean is, they get your attention to something else and make you ignore what truly is happening. The resistance possibly is also under this effect even though they are away from the combine. But you know, its just a theory.
Valve dont make half life 3 becuse they dont know how to end it Combine whoud want to anihilate earth after what gordon did And i dont think gordon can stop orbital laser from melting earth core or whatever. And bad ending whoud not satisfy fans
damn some of the comments on your video are rough but i personally loved it, the slow talk really fits the dark ambience of half life, also a nice choice of the OST tracks for the narration but i agree it was too loud sometimes, awesome video dude.
Maybe Breen is under the influence of the GMan but not for the same reasons as Gordon, like he has to fake the fact he disagree with Combine but is obliged to do so. However I don't exactly know what is the real long term action of Breen because he would have left clues that he helped resistance .. his situation is very complex, maybe he transfer refugees to become hacked super soldiers to destroy the combine who knows ? lol Good video by the way I subbed recently and I watch every beta or characters videos !
I'm catching this vid over a year later, though that doesn't diminish its interesting content at all. One thing that bugs me about Breen is that, if I remember correctly, the only reason we (as the player and as Gordon Freeman) knows that Breen negotiated the end of the Seven Hour War is through newspaper clippings we see around various locations in the game, plus maybe it's mentioned in dialog a few times. Is that itself part of the propaganda? Perhaps Breen had been under the influence of The Combine for longer than we know, and engineered the whole Resonance Cascade in the first place. Who knows?
I would love to see a live action or animated series about Breen and the things he did in the belief that it was the only way he could save humanity. There's the potential for a lot of good drama there
