Sidenote: SO sorry about the stream disaster that happened last Sunday. I didn't know both my internet and mic would betray me like that. Next time, I'll make sure everything's in order before I go live. Thanks for showing up though!
I add the coast in general to that as well. I loved the highway run along the sea followed by the floor is lava along the beach. It reminds me of going to the beach on holiday and jumping along the tops of the WW2 tank defence blocks.

Ravenholm was originally supposed to take place before Black Mesa East until really late the game's development, that's why they put alot of work into that lake on the edge of town overlooking the sunset, it's a shame this area in particular went to waste, always loved it ever since I saw that e3_docks gameplay teaser back in 2003. I'd love to see this area restored into the retail game, like for example have the escape tunnel from Black Mesa East lead out to the far side of this lake and have the player make their way to the docks and then enter the town.
6:40 Want to know what's even more perfect? The fact that this is what the weather looked like when i first watched this video, and today it also looks like that.
That intro part was really well done, GREAT JOB! Not even joking, at 6:35 I said "Holy shit" because of how good it looks. Ravenholm is one of my, at least, top 5 favorite HL chapters.
The ZombieTown maps just feel like they were an annoying pit stop that didn't add anything, just a temporary roadblock, and the fact that it's also in the day makes me think I'm right.
It was an interesting idea, but it would have been not as good as retail Ravenholm. I could imagine that ZombieTown map expanded (like a full fledged town) and taking place in daylight, but the retail Ravenholm is much, much better.
@@RadiationHazardYT I was thinking how Zombie town could be scary and the only thing I could think of is going into the factory and then underground that's infested with zombies and headcrabs. But yeah no retail ravenholm is 1000 times better.
I’d like to mention the “D” prefixes were used before 2003. d4_palace_01 and d4_streetwar_01 (I think that’s the name) I believe were from mid 2002, but I’m not sure. The d1_quarry_01 map may have been from around the same time. Also, I find it weird how they added so much greenery. I wonder how they planned to transition from the canals/wasteland to Ravenholm.
Ah ok. I was under the impression that the "d" prefixes is a retail/2003 thing. I was also thinking about the transition point while making this. I think it would have been something like - Wasteland to Quarry to Quarry Town, seeing that all 3 start on-foot. But interestingly, Quarry02 starts from the canals. I don't know; maybe they ditched the Wasteland for the Canals and then started work on Ravenholm.
@@RadiationHazardYT I think that’s the most plausible transition. You did mention in the Depot video that there were trees in the skybox in one of the versions, so maybe there was supposed to be some kind of connection there.
Ravenholm feels like a classic British Industrial revolution-era town or city. Lots of brick, lots of machine all over the place. The narrow passages and everything. Cosy and olden.
Before the e3 map, the previous ones definitely remind me of HL1 more than anything. More like something an expansion like Opposing Force of Blue Shift would have, maybe because of the more primitive graphics similar to HL1.
I see zombietown as a pit stop to the mining town. But the sign that says Springfield next 3 exits, what if that means zombietown takes place before SPRINGFIELD, the mining town.
Lol, I'll take that as a compliment. Granted my earlier videos has me talking in a very, slow, fashion. Which I regret doing. Thankfully I commentate a little faster now.
This video was very interesting, but when you started talking about the maps the background soundtrack sounds familiar, im wondering if anyone knows it

The creepy abandoned mining town asthetic is really cool but the retail games version is also really good. One of my favorite chapters In hl2.
@Burgah Boy What is your favorite then?

Very good video, I love old 2001 Ravenholm style!
Thanks Gman! :D
@@RadiationHazardYT Thanks Gordon Freeman, for making this beautyful video)
The opening speech sounds like a former resident speaking about the past glory of Ravenholm.
I love your videos dude! There's not really many good channels on RUclips that go into as much detail on the half-life 2 beta as much as you do. ❤️
6:30 damn that's eerie!
There is a video which adds the E3 parts back to ravenholm.
Quality work. Looking forward to more Beta info.
That intro is really really awesome. Gives me chills.

Ravenholm (beta and retail) summed up: 50,000 people used to live here, now it's a ghost town.

"good map, I like how they added in the details."
M..Morgan Freeman?
when it comes to Ravenholm think I'll stick with the final version. As Gordon Freeman leaves Black Mesa East he enter's a City of the dead.
great video
Thanks my man! :)

We don't go down there anymore
No, we just don't down there anymore
It's a shame they decided to make the textures less photo-like. It gave it a nice life-like feel to these maps
Probably console limitations (could be wrong tho source games are much muchhh better about data management than something like say: fallout new vegas)
Before the e3 map, the previous ones definitely remind me of HL1 more than anything. More like something an expansion like Opposing Force of Blue Shift would have, maybe because of the more primitive graphics similar to HL1.
Yeah it does look like as if the maps are being run on HL1's GoldSrc engine.
My favoritw thing about beta ravenholm is the e3 2002 entrance of the town
Same
Putting a common bird name and then "holm" at the end is almost always cool. Crowholm. Doveholm. Robinholm. Pidgeonholm is just New York, though.
Seagullholm is literally any coastal city

Both tracks are from the Black Mesa OST. One's called Catalyst, and the other is called Border World :) And thank you!

Do you always talk in that monotonous and robotic tone, or is it just for show? Anyway, great content.
Well, it's been 3 months, have you finally gotten out of Ravenholm?
No :(
