    Fun Fact: The Fisherman is the only character in Half Life 2 that is not based on an actual person's appearance.

    That church still looks absolutely awesome. Most other areas in HL2 are a bit dated by now, but damn. That church. I wonder what's up with that mashup of retail maps, it feels so weird and out of place compared to any of the other Lost Coast maps and even the retail HL2.

    • @leojwolfhouse8746
      @leojwolfhouse8746 4 года назад +6

      It's not a mashup of maps. It's just "d2_Coast_11" from retail with new HDR lighting. This retail map was most likely used to see how background context would look with HDR lighting. It's also quite possible that this is a clue that the Lost Coast could have been located directly after d2_coast_11 (the lighthouse is lighthouse point).

      @@leojwolfhouse8746 Oh, damn. I need to play HL2 again, lmao. I thought the antlion guard arena was a separate map. My bad.

    In the "Monastery HDR Test" map from Jaycie's mappack, there is a breakable wall right across from where you exit the monastery. This leads to an underground passage with a combine room. Also the "Slot Canyons HDR Test" map is simply "d2_Coast_11" from retail with new HDR lighting. You moved through it backwards in your video compared to how you move through it in retail. Therefore, the 'new area' with the lighthouse is actually lighthouse point (d2_coast_10) from retail. Since you start this map on a rock, with lighthouse point in the distance, I believe this places the Lost Coast right next to this area. So, standing from that initial starting rock, you would see lighthouse point to your left and St. Olga to your right.
    So, in my headcanon, I place the Lost Coast between lighthouse point and Nova Prospekt. In my playthroughs, I prefer to play the retail up to lighthouse point, then play the Lost Coast, then play the Russian "Depot" mod (better shows the combine's depletion of earth's resources than retail), then pickup at Nova Prospekt in retail again.

      @RadiationHazardYT  4 года назад +7

      Ohhh gotcha! I couldn't piece that "Slot Canyons" map together with the retail's and LC's maps' sequence. Thanks!

      Would love to see a mod stitching Lost Coast into that place. This could make that rebel base into the town the monastery canon is shooting at.

    Considering that in total only about 1/5 of all Half-Life 2 pre-release content was actually leaked in 2003, meaning Valve has a majority of the content still hidden away from us in the public eye, it's entirely possible there were maps of what we now call Lost Coast out there that simply all managed to not get leaked. Granted it is still kinda weird that no mentions of Lost Coast having been in development were ever made in like any of the leaked files, Raising The Bar, and so on. But still makes sense.

    • @RadiationHazardYT
      @RadiationHazardYT  4 года назад +6

      Good point. Something neat I learned from Jaycie's website is that in the RtB book, there's actually a screenshot of the Lost Coast on pg 265. The screenshot is unmarked, without any description. And this was like a year before LC got released.

    I remember when Valve announced this in 2005. I was so excited and wowed by the graphics that it actually made me tear up. I spent days just thinking about how good it would look in real-time. When I finally got to play it, I was so sad that it only lasted about an hour...Thank you for bringing back the memories!

    After i played half life 2 in 2017 (i did play HL1 when i was kid but did not look up HL2 spoilers for years until got a PC ). i was at the point of replaying HL2 every year when i miss it . or forget about it . my 2-3 playthrough is where i really start to appreciate the game . i remember watching video of VNN back in the days where he played this odd looking HL2 level that i never heard off . found out it was the *lost coast* . i could not describe how happy i was to found this secret well made HL2 level by valve in my steam library . that level basically is way to showcase what HL2 can offer you . listening to the developer commentary was something nice too .

    I never knew that lost coast would be in the original storyline or the fact it had a beta version, the things you can learn everyday. Always suspected since the ep 3 leak wich is probably not canon now, that this level was after the events of all half life.
    Either way lost coast is peak source engine in my opinion, the entire atmosphere shows how amazing the source engine is. The source engine with the correct manipulation can catch up to today's games, we already got source 2 so thats a big proof, another example but this time in source is insurgency.

    Back when I first got a good gaming PC going on, and there wasn't THAT many eyecandy games to choose from, I used to play this one a lot because like you say its really comfy and the lighting is great. The bumpmaps on the rocky beach are amazing-looking for the time, seriously. I would just sit there and take it all in at many points, and I think that that was the intention because there are many points of downtime after you kill the few enemies that are around. Even after the battle with the chopper (which, for some reason in this one is a reskinned gunship???) there is a lot of downtime until the end where it just fades out. I like it a lot more than, maybe, I should cuz it really is a short experience. Almost just a tech-demo cuz it has very little shooting.
    I think that if they left in the intro raft part, and that one puzzle, it would've been a bit more padded and would've felt less abrupt but when you would replay it those parts would just stick out as padding so that's why they cut the puzzle and the raft. Also, I heard that you were going to be able to go into the town at one point but they removed most of the detail that they did over there and made it just a really-elaborate skybox object.

    I'm a man who thinks Half-life 1 is better in many ways than Half-life 2, but I LOVE Lost Coast for some reason. Maybe because it is beautiful to look at. The only negative thing I have about Lost Coast is that it is TOO short, it wish it was like an expansion pack like Blue Shift or something. One last thing, Lost Coast looks like a early build of Dishonored (2012) to me; hey there is a video idea for you, Dishonored.

    • @RadiationHazardYT
      @RadiationHazardYT  4 года назад +5

      It might resemble Dishonored because Viktor Antonov was the Art Director for both HL2 and Dishonored :D And hell yeah man, Dishonored's world and the game itself definitely needs to be covered on this channel. But first - I gotta cover everything Valve-related :)

    I always thought the early 2000s HDR/bloom effect is too overblown in many games, such as FarCry 1 or Half-Life 2. Wish there was a setting to configure the intensity of the effect to dial it back like 20%. It feels like developers just wanted to push it in your face as best they could, similar to how modern pathtraced games have lots and lots of glossy / reflective surfaces, even when they shouldn't be *that* glossy / reflective.

    that map that looks like a mashup is just the last level of Sand Traps from retail (minus the missing geometry near the Lazo cutscene). the lighthouse is the area you come from in retail (not sure if you can see it at that part tho).
    how do i know this? trying to get the achievement where you don't touch the sand
    Edit: came back to say that the islands and rocks are new. same for the walkway that leads to the lighthouse. in retail, you'd do some platforming instead of walking on an edge
