One of the best and most comprehensive tutorials I've found on UV texturing in Maya. Your delivery and explanations were perfectly paced and easy to understand. I'm going to subscribe and also bookmark this to send friends and fellow students, thank you for taking the time.
This was a wonderful hour. I was a bit sceptic at first because a sub seems to be one of the easier things to map but you went through every bit of complications and explained everything i wanted to learn. This is an outstanding tutorial. Thanks a lot.
Jamie, I just wanna say that I'm extremely grateful for the tutorials you do. I'm struggling with Maya in school, and your tutorials and explanations have given me back my confidence to do well. Thanks. Please keep up the vids. You earned a sub. :)
Amazing tutorial, so detailed and easy to understand, and you don't have an annoying/boring voice or accent either (thank the lawd)! Thanks so much. I've been struggling to understand this for the last week and not one f*%#ing video I've watched until now has helped at all. Definitely worth a sub. Thanks again!
Sweeeeet ..thank you for the tut i have been going crazy trying to figure out how to unwrap and watched another tut that made it seem so hard but you made it seem so easy ...thank you
Hey thanks for this, I need the answer to how to do the automatic wrapping and such, and no other reasource would tell me what I wanted till I fount this thanks again.
Hi great tutorial, I am having an issue trying to uv a very basic shape. The main issue is after mapping a certain side of the object I drag away the shell in the editor and when I unclick the whole object is still within the original square and I have made a copy of the part I wanted rather than dissecting the uv like I thought I was doing. Please note I that the object has no seams(none that show up after pressing the button that should display them) any replies will be much appreciated.
Whenever I try to select individual UVs after pressing f12 (or generally going into UV mode) I am only able to select the entire UV, not the vertices. Is there a setting that I am missing or something? I select the object I want to unwrap (it's a sphere), I unwrap it, tweak the gizmo so that it is in the center of the object but the pattern is still messed up. Rotating doesn't really line the seams up any better. I am trying to select certain vertices so that I can try unfolding but no luck...
When I apply my texture onto the mesh, what happens is that the textures in front bleed through to the back - any idea why this happens? Great tutorial btw
Nevermind, looks like the "t" hotkey, or hitting "show manipulator tool" over in the left tool box, brings it back. Not sure why when I tried just clicking the input it didn't work for me (especially since I knew history is turned on)..but this is an easy work around for anyone looking.
I did also notice though that you also ran into the scaling issue in the uv texture editor. Even when you select the middle blue box to scale the shell larger or smaller in uniform, it often decides to scale just vertical or horizontally instead. Is there a trick to this? Sorry for all the questions..only if you have time to answer :) Thanks again for this great tutorial
Cheers bro.. stick at it! after awhile it gets easier.. although uv mapping is still a pain in the ass.. but you can use other tools to speed things up
Hey, I used 'Shift+I' to isolate an object in my scene and now it wont reveal the rest when I click 'Show>all'. Any ideas? Very frustrating....half my model is gone!
when i follow along with the uv scaling tool, in the uv texture editor everything looks the same. but in my viewport the texture pattern on the submarine doesn't move or do anything. what am i doing wrong? thank you :)
Hi, i really wasnt expecting a reply.... most youtubers dont! xD I have one more question if thats ok, you know when you unwrap, does all the pieces of the unwrapped geometry have to fit in the top right square? or can they be anywhere as long as its not overlapping? Thanks again for taking the time to answer
I HAVE A MAYA ANIMATION TUTORIAL BUT MY PROBLEM IS , AT THE WORK FILE OF THE TUTORIAL THE "SHIP" THAT I USE TO STUDY HOW TO ANIMATE , IT LOST ITS OWN TEXTURE !!! IV TRIED EVERYTHING I KNOW , AND TRIED TO CLICK ON OFF THE HARDWARE TEXTURING BOTTOM , NOTHING CHANGED .
Let me know if you like or don't like the videos in 'full length' format.. previously I've been only able to upload 10 minute clips.. but now RUclips has generously allowed longer videos to be uploaded.. peace!
Why is it that 3ds Max and Maya are made by autodesk, and yet max's UV tools are utterly shocking.... im going to have to texture in maya, but all the GUI navigation is confusing.... :/ thanks for the guide btw, its earned you a sub :DDD
autodesk bought 3dsmax off discreet years back.. and later acquired maya off alias.. expect to see a more unified product suite of autodesk in release 2013. As for unwrapping both applications have their pros and cons.. personally uv unwraps are my pet hate.. Keep a eye out for full ptex implementation in the future.. which is a uv less texturing system..
yeah bro... if you have a non tiling texture your uv's should go inside the top right square.. or 0,0 to 1,1 coordinates.. if your texture tiles then your uv's can go anywhere really.. and as large as you want..
they need to make a new version of maya that can automatically make near perfect uv maps. because the labor for just this one object is rediculous. creating/modeling the boat itself takes only a fraction of the time spent mapping uv's
Wow, a UV tutorial for the most recent Maya version that's clear, well organized, and thorough. I had almost given up finding one. Thanks for this!

thanks! great :3
although I can't figure out how to get rid of the texture projections if I've put on more of them than I want >.
I have a problem. When I apply the texture it shows the lines to, even when I render it.
