Thank you so much man! I now have the beginnings of texture mapping understood. God the internet is awesome. Thanks again for taking the time to make and post your tutorial.
Thank you man, this saved my life. Third video on the subject I've seen and the only one I've understood so far. The only reason a person wouldn't understand this is if they had never even tried to do it on their own.
Dude, THANK YOU! I am such a noob that I just needed a simple shape to get the light bulb to turn on. That was so helpful for a first time student that was not quite sure about some of the basics. All you can really find on YT are much more complicated models and meshes. My teacher is blazing through Maya and it is really hard to keep up if you are new. Thanks again!
Thanks a bunch! Was a bit difficult to follow for a newbie like me (you used a lot of tools without explaining which they were), but in general very helpful!
Usually not though people are certainly free to do so. This is a 'manual' method and perhaps the most organised. I have seen other automatic plugins such as Roadkill or UVMapper that also do a good job. I operate on a 'whatever works most efficiently for you to get the same result' mantra so consider this manual method only a starting point to help you master your own 'style' of working. The same principles usually apply across any platform you choose to work with.
Brushes available in the Tales of Nalstone blog site or you can make your own. To delete all history it's Shift + Alt + D by default in Maya 2012. The UV 'shortcut' is actually a custom Marking menu which you can create. Look for the marking menu tutorial in my channel somewhere. :)
Excellent video you really helped me. Please can you do make another video but with sometime a little more complex, I am sure the principles are the same but UV mapping isn't a easy topic for me .
Hello, that's actually something called a Marking Menu. you can create your own to speed up your workflow. That was customized to suit my personal shortcut key preferences. I'll make a tutorial in future covering this.
Yep, your unfold settings may be different. Go to Polygons > Unfold options box. In the check boxes below, you can select either Pin Selected UVs or Pin Unselected UVs.
Nice tutorial. Only one thing. I found if you make a texture in PS that has a transparent background and save it as a png the transparency will show up in game engines as a horrible pink and purple smear. If your saving png with transparency you have to save it as, "Save for Web" 24 bit png. Better to save as a taga file because you don't get the seam. Or you can re adjust your UV map after making the texture to have the image over lap the seam area.
Hey, Great tutorial I followed most of it and got a decent looking stick. I had a few problems trying to follow you in photoshop. Can you give me some information on the brushes you were using? I tried playing with the brush tool and my outcome was more of a bark look than a bamboo look. I also missed a lot of shortcut keys like one for deleting all the history and how you opened that quick menu on the model for the UV texture editor.
NIce voice and great tutorial; Ive been looking for a way to do Vertex painting though I dont think maya calls it as max does. HOw would I input 3 layered textured , and paint say a terrain as desired with thsoe textures ? ( not ramp)
I figured it out. After he cuts the all around the top edge and chooses the middle UV, hold down control and right click. a menu will come up, select to shell. you should be able to move the cut UV now.
please help me someone , after opening hypershade and when trying to assign bump map to blinn , connections editor pops up , now what components am i supposed to connect with its respective components on right hand side?? please help
When unfolding the UV's i saw that whatever points you had selected, it would unfold by those points. Maya was working the exact opposite for me because I had to select every point but those UV points that were moved to achieve the same deal. Is there a setting you have on for this or is that suppose to be default.
i got some weird effects when i attached the texture to the model: actually things that were BEHIND other things came in front of it like this optical illusion.. any guess?
I did exactly like you did in the video which is exactly what my teacher taught me aswell, but the texture isnt being rendered, the model is affected by the blinn and i can see the texture within the UV-texture editor. i tried it on another model and it works perfectly well its just this one model and i cant for the life of me figure out whats diffrent u got any ideas?
NVM, I figured it out. Is there no way though to automatic this with a script, so I dont have to choose a new texture I want to paint with , each time I need a unique one ?
No, I use my school computer. NVIDIA Quadro 600 GPU with 716 Megs of Graphics memory. I'm assuming Maya uses more graphical memory than anything. Or is it CPU based?
It was awesome, but I could not finish this tutorial, you never told us what short cut keys you used for numerous things, such as how you pivoted the move tool I think the short cut key is X? Same for Freeze Transformations, clearing inputs, moving and scaling the UV maps within the UV Editor....for us beginners it is impossible to know how to do those things, I tried using the move tool and scale tool outside the UV Editor and nothing would work lol.......I totally gave up.....:)
I agree with you, it is hard as a beginner to catch everything that a more experienced user is doing. I think, though, that many of these beginner tutorials are made with the expectation that we have at least started to learn /understand the User Interface first. There are plenty of UI walk-throughs here on RUclips. I think maybe we should start there then come back to this because I am totally impressed at the outcome of this bamboo plant! This guy makes it seem virtually impossible to mess it up on our own.
+Valentina Michelle I totally agree!....:) It's funny that in Cinema 4D, I was able to make that, and texture it... in 5 to 8 minutes....Also, modeling is gotten better now in Maya 2016 extension 2.
Someone please help me! The UV snapshot for Maya 2015 doesn't seem to be working for me. I try to save the UV as a photoshop file, but whenever I press "OK", it never saves!
To anyone using Autodesk Maya 2017 and not getting the right UV map when unfolding try to right click the unfold button and chose method: Legacy and under pinning to pin UVs and Pin selected UVs gave me the same result as the video
I'm guessing you are using the default UV map. Make sure in your UV texture editor you shrink your UV map away from the edges of your coordinates. UV's should never touch the edges of your image. That will cause problems. Bring the Poly Sphere back into Maya to do that or you can do that in Mudbox. I can't tell you how in Mudbox because I don't use it myself. Take a look online for tutorials on that.
I confuse about how to connect between texturing and UV. But when i found this bambo video. I know the way. You're awesome.! Thanks very much.

Thanks so much for making my life seem easier. Your videos are quick and easy to understand.

I never knew you could do alot things with the diffuse texture.
Thanks a lot. :)
Excellent job. I love it. I was looking for how to FIX UV's and stumbled upon this. Love it!!!!!
Thanks Man! I was crying cause this UV.
Never stop learning!
Thanks!
Very nice tutorial.Totally easy to follow and understand.
great simple and fun clarification on uv editor . thank you
Helped me dig myself out of a hole, thanks you so much!
Thanks a bunch! Was a bit difficult to follow for a newbie like me (you used a lot of tools without explaining which they were), but in general very helpful!
You are amazing! Thanks so much! This has been very helpful and inspiring

Thank you very much for your quick response!
(May have bitten off more than I can chew, by trying to UV a Hudson Streamliner)
Still trying to fold and unfold visuals in my brain but the tutorial was clear and fun :)
excellent tut, a little fast but okay, enjoyed the PS texturing wish you can do a vid just on that. Thx and will check out your other work
Thank you , it was very useful.
For Maya 2012, hold "D" or press "Insert". It's one of those two because somewhere between 2009 and 2012 they've changed it.
Hey, Great tutorial I followed most of it and got a decent looking stick.

Amazing! Tnx u save my life!
Great..simple..
Big Thnaks
Thank you so much, that was useful.
I dont know what did u do on 4:48, can you help me?
really great!
NIce voice and great tutorial; Ive been looking for a way to do Vertex painting though I dont think maya calls it as max does. HOw would I input 3 layered textured , and paint say a terrain as desired with thsoe textures ? ( not ramp)

did u get it sorted in the end?
The tutorial is good. But a question I have undzwar how do I get the little window that appears when you had clicked extrude? The at 2:23!
please help me someone , after opening hypershade and when trying to assign bump map to blinn , connections editor pops up , now what components am i supposed to connect with its respective components on right hand side??
please help
There's only 'unfold' in Maya's UV texture editor. But in context of other 3d apps, it should be similar.
this tutorial is very help. :)
How did you fix? Because I have the same problem
When unfolding the UV's i saw that whatever points you had selected, it would unfold by those points. Maya was working the exact opposite for me because I had to select every point but those UV points that were moved to achieve the same deal. Is there a setting you have on for this or is that suppose to be default.
How did you expand for the cap uv text editor part...
hi complete noob here. How did you drag the texture to the mesh? i tried and it only moved the box in the hypershade editor in the work area.
i got some weird effects when i attached the texture to the model:
actually things that were BEHIND other things came in front of it like this optical illusion..
Do you have a Maya Qualified video card? I teach Maya in my lab and for years had similar strange problems and it turn out to be the video card...
Is there a shortcut for deleting the history? cause its like you made yours just disappear without going to edit>delete by type..
Thank you very much !
3:37 - how did you get that menu up????????????
Strange, check to see if you can cut other standard objects. If not, I recommend deleting the maya preferences and trying again, it could be bugged.
NVM, I figured it out. Is there no way though to automatic this with a script, so I dont have to choose a new texture I want to paint with , each time I need a unique one ?
Hey man, Thanks for this reall great breakdown of UV mapping... do you find yourself using any 3rd party software to deal with UV mapping?
thanks a lot!
Thank you sir!
i am fresher of maya... actually in my system not showing render icon... how can i fix
9:00 what's your image viewing programm ?? :D Great tutorial, thanks a lot !
That would be the mac previewer. (Select image + Spacebar). Very cool!
Tales of Nalstone Thanks for the fast answereing, I guesss you woun't find this programm for windows :/
but how to texture NURBS ? Can the information here be used on them ?
No, I use my school computer. NVIDIA Quadro 600 GPU with 716 Megs of Graphics memory. I'm assuming Maya uses more graphical memory than anything. Or is it CPU based?

+Mako 44 *has
13:21 If your texture isn't showing in the editor, press 6, that worked for me.
My UVs don't cut. They stay together. I'm following the video exactly but to no avail.
Someone please help me! The UV snapshot for Maya 2015 doesn't seem to be working for me. I try to save the UV as a photoshop file, but whenever I press "OK", it never saves!
Try selecting all of your UV and then do a snapshot. or try to save as jpeg or png
i have no clue how you changed the pivot point D=
Good tutorial, liked and +faved it.
Although imho you should say or at least show the shortcuts or steps you use to bring up new menus etc.
To anyone using Autodesk Maya 2017 and not getting the right UV map when unfolding try to right click the unfold button and chose method: Legacy and under pinning to pin UVs and Pin selected UVs gave me the same result as the video
Hotbox. Press and hold spacebar to bring this up.

Shift + > or Shift +
best unwrapping solution XrayUnwrap 1.5.6 complex unwrapping conditions
2:26有照著你去做 有擠壓下 可是失敗ㄌ 變成只有四面下去 中間沒下去
yeah, maya does a lot of weird stuff to me. I can barely be doing anything sometimes and it will make weird stuff happen
expand selection? HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT????????
Far from basic, I had no clue what you were doing most of the video
Gotta agree, totally lost. Sorry man but I'm off to find another tutorial.
+Masterof thelag Same here.....
+jeff darnell Totally lost me too...
Reinstall Maya or delete the preferences. That's the only solution I can think of =/
OK guys! Don't respond to this comment anymore. Thank you.
