I think Dan Campbell is a great coach i just hope that he changes his philosophy of always having to go for it in situations that he obviously shouldn't.
This happens sometimes with head coaches, in all sports. They're effective and have major strengths but one particular flaw that bites them in the ass. Jim Mora, for example, was extremely demanding and got the most out of his roster, but never won a playoff game in part because he worked his players so hard that they were exhausted and worn down by season's end.
The entire game changed on that first 4th down miss. That's what analytics can never take into account. There's a human factor to the game. It's the difference between the 49ers feeling like they have a chance only down two scores halfway through the third quarter, and the 49ers feeling like, "damn, it's halfway through the third and we're still down three scores." Mathematical models can never take everything into account. Dan Campbell made some atrocious decisions in that game, but I think the biggest one that showed he wasn't ready for the moment was that timeout taken at the end of the game. You CANNOT take a timeout there. The 4th down attempts were bad but they were at least kind of defensible, but that timeout was just a horror show of coaching. You HAD TO keep all of your timeouts to have a shot.
Two things can be true: Lions were actually watchable football this year and had a nice run deep in the playoffs. It was amazing. Dan Campbell was an inexperienced position coach whose weakness is following analytics 100% and game management issues. We'll see if that changes.
Too many of these coaches nowadays are following analytics !! There not coaching ....all there doing in using "Probabilities and Statatics"... In the long run its ruining their thought process of the real game being played out on the field. F@#$ ANALYTICS!!!!
@@HRGreenShark It is a tool........if you are going to call 100% analytics probability just have the GM use the ipad to signal the call. No coach needed.
This might get long... In those fourth down situations this season, the Lions converted 18/21 if I heard the stat correctly. There was no reason to think that one of those two would not be converted. The percentage for a fourth down conversion was actually higher than the Lion's field goal kicker's field goal percentage for the season. Reynolds uncharacteristically dropped two passes. St. Brown uncharacteristically dropped a pass. Gibbs, to the best of my recollection, has not fumbled the ball the whole season until that play. And, the 50 plus yard reception off the defender's face is about as fluke as a play can get. A different outcome regarding ANY of these plays makes this a different game. That is NOT taking anything away from San Francisco. The Lions were not projected to get as far this season as they did. Before the season started, the "word around town" regarding expectations was to host and win a playoff game. The Lions did that. Twice. The season was a huge success. Most people that don't keep the Lions as their home team have difficulty understanding that. This season has given me something this team has never given me. Legitimate, logical hope backed with facts and figures, not just blind prayers. In the past, this team has backed into most of its playoff appearances, relying on other teams to win or lose on the last day of the regular season to make said appearance. That was not the case this season. The Lions were in control of their goals and their destiny the whole season. And, while still being owned by the Fords, this is a different ownership now. For the first time since I have been watching this team, ownership is mostly staying out of the way of football operations that most affect the product on the field. The same cannot be said about previous eras. So, while many comment that the Lions blew their only opportunity at a Super Bowl for the rest of eternity, I have reason to believe things ACTUALLY are different now. RIP SOL. Beyond that, congratulations to the San Francisco 49ers. You were talked about for most of the season as Super Bowl contending favorites, and you proved you are the team that many suspected you were. I am proud that the Detroit Lions were able to make it as far as they did, and that they gave the 49ers a legitimate fight. Remember, the last time the Lions were in this spot, they lost 42-10. At least they were competitive this time around. Great season, Lions! Make your off-season improvements and prove everyone wrong again next year!
Because.. you don’t know the Lions. They are 20-25 from 4th and 3 and further. Dudes dropped passes. Reynolds catches that and you’re all kissing his ass.
@@jdocean1 lol the Lions kicker had roughly the same FG percentage from that distance that the Lions have on their 4th down conversion. Secondly, Reynolds dropped the pass that hit him in the hands. It was the right call. “Take the points”? How do you know the FG try would have been good?
@@BobbyMerf2446bro the ball was on the 28-yard line, the Lions kicker could have made that easily in second of all if they go for that field goal I bet all those other fluky plays never happened the reason why the players were dropping balls and missing interceptions and missing Blitz is because they were playing scared and they were pressing after seeing the momentum shift to the 49ers. Hey they just kicked that field goal they would have been up by three possessions the Lions players would have known that and been playing carefree and easy and clean and calm. But once they missed that 4th down they knew they were only up my two possessions and the 49ers are already on the 30-yard line and the defense was now pressing and after the 49ers scored then the offense is now pressing because their possession was down to just one possession. If they kick the field goal they go up by three possessions and half of the third quarters already gone you're just with a deflated the 49ers in the 49ers would have to start from square one again but this time with half the quarter already gone. By the time the Lions got the ball back it would have probably been nearly the fourth quarter and my point is if they kick that field goal a lot of those boneheaded plays never happen, the phone doesn't happen to drop balls never happen. All they would have had to do was run the ball and get some first downs and make it back to field goal range they didn't even need to score touchdowns. When you're up by 17 at the beginning of the second half you don't even need to score touchdowns you just need to run the ball and get first downs and get in the field goal range that's it, and you're basically guaranteed a victory
@@jamesbroomfield7799 I ain’t reading all that shit. Keep it short. Campbell going for it is what got the Lions there. You do what has worked all season cuz I guarantee you if he kicked and it missed, people gonna rip him for not staying true to his identity.

Best football season ever in Michigan with the wolverines and lions. Not too long ago all these experts were ragging on Harbaugh, now where are you all at? Where the f are you? Oh I know, you love Harbaugh now. I travel for work every week, every place I go, people are rooting for the lions, and they love Dan Campbell. He, Shiela Ford and Brad Holmes and the players have given us an amazing season. Did they make mistakes? For sure. Are they making progress? Oh yea. This season was a treasure and the future is bright. It’s hard to win in the NFL. Look at the Ravens, the best team in football this year went down. Miami, massive injuries… love you Dan and Lions. Let’s go
May not have enjoyed this, but it was still somehow therapeutic. I brought my 6yo boy to the last Vikings, then Rams and Bucs playoff games at Ford Field, then the watch party against the 49ers Ford Field. To have my boy all built up and get dumped on like that hurt me even more than it hurt me personally, and it hurt me a lot. The only thing that could have erased the joy of a season like that was a loss like that. We handed the win to SF. They didn’t beat us. No offense SF. I’ll even root for you in the SB. It’s simply true. We gave you a gift. Now you better win. Or it will hurt us even more.
Scott I just posted a comment...hey, really, trust me, ...the NINERS are the better team..and showed it in the second half...be proud, your lions had a great year... focus on the positive and next year..you should be one of favorites in NFC.😁✌️
Not true.... Your low expectations is typical of Michigan Lions fans.... I don't share that opinion.. This was our opportunity to win and Dan Campbell blew it..
Campbell's affinity for agression got the best of him. It reminds me of this Shakespearian quote: “When lenity and cruelty play for a kingdom, the gentler gamester is the soonest winner”― William Shakespeare, Henry V.
It's a learning experience. I think they'll be back. I said the lions were gonna be dangerous last year when they stopped the Packers from making the playoffs. That being said... It's not gonna get any easier. The NFC will get better as well.
As a Lions fan since 1988, I have always loved your takes on Detroit. Your 0-16 content was amazing. That said, I feel like this will haunt the franchise for decades. Unless MCDC can stop being a degenerate gambler, this team will be rebuilding againg very soon.
Jim u r exactly correct....The niners should be embarrassed to have won that game...bc they needed a ridiculous amount of pathetic crap play and a few horrible decisions to win that game. I am still not sure the Niners are the best team from the NFC.
Good point about what the future might hold. Could be years before the Lions have another shot...nothing's guaranteed. Remember the time Bum Phillips said next year we'll kick the door in. Never happened. Hopefully they can rebound from this.
Dan Campbell really showed his ass -- again. Campbell takes no responsibility and for that he is a damn fool. He already cost this team three regular season games this season with similar gambles (Seattle, Chicago and Dallas) and he cost them the Thanksgiving Day game in 2022. Conversely, in the 1960 NFL Championship Game against the Eagles, Vince Lombardi's Packers were deep in Eagles territory on several occasions and Lombardi went for it on 4th down instead of kicking field goals. His 4th down gambles failed. He later said that HE lost the game and added when you're down near the goal line you gotta have something to show for it. Lombardi changed his ways and never lost another postseason game. Enjoy the Super Bowl from your couch, Coach Campbell.
Yes heartbreaking loss, but the worst one was when Isaiah Thomas threw inbound pass, that got stolen by Larry Bird to DJ for the win, eastern conference finals that was a killer it was in 87,or88
One note about "taking the points": that assumes that the Lions' kicker will make those kicks. He's 50% from 45+ yards. Not a sure thing by any stretch of the imagination. Even Jake Moody, a very good kicker, missed a 40+ yard kick earlier in the game.
The Lions are not going to Win a Super Bowl with Dan Campbell. They'll probably miss the playoffs next year. Do we really think Vikings and Bears won't be better next year? Bears showed grit and toughness at the end of the season. Oh yeah, don't forget about the Packers who are probably the early favorite to Win the division next year.
Your right Dan Campbell did help get us here we are now but yes he is to aggressive and I will be surprise that we go any further with Campbell. But Campbell was not all at fault the players were dropping to much balls in the second half.
The Colts lost a playoff game to Steelers in January, 2006. Jim Rome: "The Colts Super Bowl window is now closed." They won the SB the next year then went to another SB a few years later lol.
Yet the lions kick a FG on 4th and goal from the 2 before halftime when they had all the momentum. Terrible coaching same as Dallas game. Gets in his head and he doesn’t back off
You know what might be just as painful? Having your QB injured in the beginning of the game (not to mention the backup's backup's backup also getting hurt) so you lose against a team you should have beaten (see: Week 13). Yes, the 49ers have won 5 rings... but not in my lifetime. I've seen them lose two Super Bowls they could have won. Just saying, the Lions aren't the only ones to have to deal with heartbreak.
Difference being. You have 5 Superbowls. And double digit playoff appearances. When you're team never sniffs success and you collapse like that. It's true pain
So now we all know or we all should know that the Lions kicker had not made a 45+ field goal on grass since 2020 and was 9/20 from 48+ in his career the Lions were also 17/22 on 4th and similar, can only blame the mistakes on the field because the decisions were correct.
Doesnt even make top 10 on games lost as a Lions fan.. great fucking season, great fucking coach... boys just couldnt catch the ball when they needed to. You have no idea what pain is for Lions fans
The moronic thing was calling the timeout on 4th down that sealed the fate... can't stop clock if 49ers get ball back, if the Lions had 3 timeouts they would force 49ers to get a first down and had to punt the ball back to Detroit with probably less than 30 seconds.
When the score was 24-10 the Lions went for it on 4th down when they had a field goal available, that was a momentum swing, you have to kick the field goal the game would of been 27-10 and the Lions back in control 😂
For a few moments there,, it appeared that the Lions were going to provide the same thing to Detroit that LeBron James and his Cavaliers DID provide the city of Cleveland in June, 2016,,, a Sports WORLD Championship to their beloved city. Well LeBron and his Cavs DID hang on and pulled the amazing UPset against those favored Warriors (and on the road and in Game-7) while unfortunately,, the Lions of January, 2024 just collapsed a bit TOO much in the end.
It sucks but we also got waxed by the Redskins in 1991/1992, and Philadelphia in 1995/1996, And probably the worst as two time defending NFL champs to the Browns in 1954, 56-10 after beating them the week before in the same stadium 14-10. This is not the worst Lion playoff loss by a long shot.
Jaguars have never gotten so close after that blown game in New England. Falcons have had it even worse after 28-3. Lions and Browns just seem to be in a forever submerged boat.

Jim Mora, for example, was extremely demanding and got the most out of his roster, but never won a playoff game in part because he worked his players so hard that they were exhausted and worn down by season's end.
It makes sense since Dan has never run a program before. No time time to learn on the job in the bigs.
I like football ,and a big lions fan,yea hurts to loose like that, but have to remember its just a game, more important things in life
The entire game changed on that first 4th down miss.
Their
@@HRGreenShark It is a tool........if you are going to call 100% analytics probability just have the GM use the ipad to signal the call. No coach needed.
I miss Rome is burning. That show was simply phenomenaaaaaaaaalllll
Dan Gamble creates a Shambles
Dan cannibal lol, I love that
How many lions fans were on SeatGeek buying Super Bowl tickets during half time and getting hotel reservations?
#DanCampbell Always take the 3 points. Why would you pass on free opportune time, twice???
Because.. you don’t know the Lions. They are 20-25 from 4th and 3 and further. Dudes dropped passes. Reynolds catches that and you’re all kissing his ass.
@@BobbyMerf2446not in the NFC Championship. You take the points.
That Lion's collapse is called Purdy.
Atlanta Lions they are f’d. Just as Lamar will never win a big game you can’t come back from these loses. After 4 straight SB loses the bills still can’t figure it out.
Lifelong lions fan here. Yeah we blew it yesterday but 2 playoff wins in a season, division title, and 30 mins from the SB
Plus UM won a Natty 😅
Scott I just posted a comment...hey, really, trust me, ...the NINERS are the better team..and showed it in the second half...be proud, your lions had a great year... focus on the positive and next year..you should be one of favorites in NFC.😁✌️
30 years away from winning another playoff game
You wrong you don't leave points on the field specially when are winning #fired Dan Campbell 👍
Not true.... Your low expectations is typical of Michigan Lions fans.... I don't share that opinion.. This was our opportunity to win and Dan Campbell blew it..
@@AlkebulanFoundation it's going to be your theme as long as Dan the HC.
From the coach who probably lost the 1 seed by going for three 2 point conversions that didn't work. I see a trend....
DAMN COACH LEFT POINTS ON FIELD IN THE DALLAS GAME! HE KILLED US IN BOTH GAMES!
The Lions should have waited until they got to Vegas. They could've put it all on a craps table and had more fun losing it.
Same ole lions, restore the roar, meow, meow. 😊
Love the Lions!
Another coaching error! 😮
Im a lions fan and its ok, we all make mistakes. we be back next year. And its only a game , not the end of the world
Great take You re for real Bro Ha ha I got a chuckle too. Words Smith Rome🎤👍🙋
Your set looks modern for Detroit. I thought all of its buildings are condemned by now
Jim Rome is still alive?
Didnt even know this Rome guy was still around, came across him today on you tube. Still remember when Jim Everett smashed this fool🤣🤣🤣
The 3rd down run on the goal line snatches the worst call from that spot straight from Pete Caroll.
…..by a wide margin.
Lions still had a respectable season. Best they've been in 3 decades. Hold your heads up Lions.
Yes heartbreaking loss, but the worst one was when Isaiah Thomas threw inbound pass, that got stolen by Larry Bird to DJ for the win, eastern conference finals that was a killer it was in 87,or88
To Campbell, converting 4th downs is more important than the score.
This new trend of hyper aggressive play calling is going to be the downfall of many teams
" ladybug lucky " you cant beat it!
A season is a larger sample set than a single game where it's win or go home. Detroit lived by the sword, and then died by it.
Sometimes, ya just kick the field goal
They choked, plain and simple. It happens. You could just feel the Lions losing control. I blame their receivers for dropping several good passes.
💯 agree
Yet the lions kick a FG on 4th and goal from the 2 before halftime when they had all the momentum. Terrible coaching same as Dallas game. Gets in his head and he doesn’t back off
Even though I’m not really a fan, sometimes the Rome Effect is exactly what’s called for… Rack him.. lol..
Vintage Rome !
@marvinlistenbee361 the losses are more painful the closer you get to the trophy, and we have had many such losses. It's just my opinion
So now we all know or we all should know that the Lions kicker had not made a 45+ field goal on grass since 2020 and was 9/20 from 48+ in his career the Lions were also 17/22 on 4th and similar, can only blame the mistakes on the field because the decisions were correct.
Something to build on.. use to be a fan of your show
Or you never come back like Atlanta, Arizona, Miami, and on
Fact is DC let his ego get in the way of his brain.
Im really beginning to believe that someone is sabotaging the lions gatorade supply at halftime 😅 they always sell in the second half
They kept going on 4th downs like a degenerate gambler loose in a casino....
This the 2nd time Detroit let someone come back from behind in so many weeks. No innuendo intended. It was a great season regardless
are the lions , the cubs of the past?
It wasn't the coaches fault it was the receiver Reynolds fault for missing it
They're going to go into next season with a fire in their stomachs
hopefully they get that checked before it turns into diarrhea
Just because you stand behind your decision, doesn't make the decision right Dan.
It sucks but we also got waxed by the Redskins in 1991/1992, and Philadelphia in 1995/1996,
And probably the worst as two time defending NFL champs to the Browns in 1954, 56-10 after beating them the week before in the same stadium 14-10. This is not the worst Lion playoff loss by a long shot.
Jaguars have never gotten so close after that blown game in New England. Falcons have had it even worse after 28-3. Lions and Browns just seem to be in a forever submerged boat.
Someone please make a video of Cenobites coming for a dude and just before the fish hooks start digging in, Pinhead sees the Lions shirt and other memorabilia and puts a halt to their attack. Pinhead…”NO”… other Cenobites… “NO?” Pinhead… “NOO, he has already suffered that which is Legendary even in HELL!”
That Aiyuk play would’ve been PI regardless whether he picked it or not
Refs picked up the flag, though.
Dan Campbell is the typical coach who wants to have his imprint on a win like that. It made sense to take the 6 points and 2 fg's, but that wouldn't be
" the Campbell Way. "
Pride comes before the fall.
if the Lions have another good season next year or, if they put together a string of strong seasons or, if they win a Super Bowl (or two or, three or more) with Campbell, they'll forget . . . or, maybe you're not giving lions fans enough credit . . . ? 👀
Halftime...then the email arrived to throw the game yet make the spread for Vegas.
Karma for my Nephew!
Blew it!😂😮😢
