My full thoughts on who should be doing blindness simulations:
    • Are Blindness Simulati...
Normally I don't support sighted people doing blindness simulations. I think it can emphasize a sense of hopelessness, helplessness, and incapability. People can leave with the impression that all disabilities are the same and they know exactly what it's like to be disabled when it couldn't be further than the truth. That's not what today's video is about! Today, by popular request, I will be blindfolding Robbie and showing him how I do things as a blind person. I want to take this as an opportunity to answer questions I otherwise wouldn't think to answer, and share how I accomplish many day-to-day tasks. I'd love to hear your tips and tricks for daily tasks below!

The "making Breakfast" struggles mirrored my own when I came home from the hospital newly blinded by a small stroke. I live alone, and hadn't had any time to locate training or assistance so I had several very messy and relatively unknown meals as I relearned the skills to do the thinngs that I did on "autopilot" just a few days earlier. Thanks for bringing this process into view for us. This was a great show for all of us to learn from.

Well done with this! The challenges were fair and typical of challenges we would face in our every day lives. I like watching blindness challenges when they’re approached with respect and realism like this is. I love the support of the friends you had here as well. You guys filmed a video that wasn’t only informative, but you all sounded like you had a lot of fun with it. This was such fun to watch.

Thank you! That’s such high praise. I was so concerned that it wouldn’t come across the way I hoped it would. :) it was a lot of fun to film!

Oh my God how much I envy you and your relationship. I’m not even able to mention my man putting on a blindfold. And the only reason I even thought of asking it is because I don’t have the words to tell him why I do things the way I do. I’m new to blindness as well thought he would want to hang with me I was wrong good job boyfriend awesome job girlfriend!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh, this was a great video! Terrifying about crossing the street 😱 I don't often see blind people out walking, and I totally get why. So sad, but I get it. I can't believe people didn't wait until he found the curb; maybe they were thinking, "Oh it's stupid RUclipsrs doing stupid things!" But I would have waited for him to find the curb, or at least safety 💔
I have trying to walk around with my eyes closed. I know it's different, but I was rubbish at it 😁

Enjoyed viewing this video. Well done with the help of your sister & friend. Sighted people take much for granted to accomplish daily tasks, that you have mastered with savvy & grace. So nice to see the rapport you two share. PS quality long sleeved shirt choice with many miles on it!

Hi Tamara, such a really good way to demostrate, how it feels to navigate around in the kitchen, and to get dressed. To navigate to and around the food store. I thought Robbie, did a really good job. Kind regards Tony from Scandinavia

Thank you! I wanted to try to show a different side of blindness that I couldn’t offer - someone who had newly lost their vision. It’s a difficult balancing act to be sensitive to the experience of others while trying to show the challenges and triumphs. I definitely think Robbie did a great job!

With my adhd and learned helplessness id be so screwed. I'd be fkrgetting food even more, burning my hand, I've always thought crossing the street would be the hardest thing to do, and cars don't wait long at all for you to pass...I was thinking he picked up a lot from you as well because of how well he did in the store.

Maybe your bf got that self-checkout thing down so well because he’d used it before and had a kind of muscle memory as to where some of the buttons were.

It's interesting to see a Canadian self checkout. Lol I was like, it's not talking!!! The ones we have here in the United States talk a ton. Lol they're still not very accessible, but they talk way more than this one did in your video. :) I'm kinda terrible. I don't actually organize my clotheing by color or anything--but because I have WayAround WayTag buttons sewn into a lot of my clothes, I really don't have to be as precise. :) They're little sew-in NFC tags. They're a little pricey, but they're completely waterproof and can go through the dryer. They can even be dry-cleaned, as long as you let your dry-cleaner know that there's plastic NFC tags in your clotheing so they don't accidentally ruin them somehow lol. My life has been so different since I got these--for the better! :)
You're so right--spreading things when your blind is such a royal pain in the butt!!!
If you know Braille, I highly recommend trying out Apple's Braille Screen Input mode. It's way better than having to use dictation and hope it gets it right lol.
Oh, and if you've never heard of AppleVis, you should check that out, too. It's applevis.com
It's a site for blind Apple product users. :)
