  • This video provides a basic introduction to some key principles of intercultural communication: a contrast between an "other-centered" orientation and "intercultural communication competence," low-context versus high-context cultures, and hofstede's dimensions of cultural difference.

    Great video and thanks for sharing. It is said in the last part that the more we understand about other cultures the greater opportunity we have to reach the ideal goal of intercultural communication competence. The challenge is how language teachers could promote and encourage the skills in EFL contexts to help the situation.

      @stephenklien  4 месяца назад

      You are very welcome! The basic distinction is this: "Intercultural communication" refers to the communication between people from different cultures, whereas "cross-cultural communication" refers to an area of study in which communication patterns from different cultures are compared and contrasted in order to understand the similarities and differences. So, inquiry into "cross-cultural communication" can help someone engage in "intercultural communication" more effectively.

    Thank you for this introduction to intercultural communication. It would also be of benefit to understand what happens when we place expectations on those from another culture to act in a certain way. I often wonder what is taking place within a person when we encourage/push that person to be more assertive in their communication style (let's say like Americans) when they come from a culture when such behavior is not often looked upon favorably - especially when you are a woman. I would think that the person might experience some inner conflict. Just a thought.

    • @stephenklien
      @stephenklien  Год назад +1

      Absolutely! As an educator at Mizzou I see this all the time, It took me regrettably too long in my own career to realize that, for instance, holding the same expectations for active, assertive participation in the classroom for international students from East and South Asia as I did for those raised from birth in US classrooms was grossly unfair. The educational cultures are entirely different, including expectations regarding what is acceptable decorum when communicating with teachers.

    At 12:20 the narrator utters a falsehood. He says that Hofstede proposed 6 cultural dimensions. He did not. He proposed 4. The final two were discovered by other research teams.
    Here is a convenient summary from Wikipedia.
    1991 Michael Harris Bond and Chinese colleagues at the University of Hon Kong conducted a study among students in 23 countries, using a survey instrument developed with Chinese employees and managers. The results from this study led Hofstede to add a new fifth dimension to his model: long-term orientation (LTO), initially called Confucian dynamism.
    Finally, the Bulgarian linguist Michael Minkov's analysis of the World Values Survey data from 93 national populations also led Geert Hofstede to identify a sixth last dimension: indulgence versus restraint.[7]
