    I appreciate the level of rigor you bring to these videos! It'd be cool to see a comparison of these SF strip lights versus the LED T8-size grow lights from amazon sellers like Barrina and Monios-L. The price per lumen on the T8 lights is really incredible, but I wonder if we pay for it in light quality or efficiency.

    The SF300 and SF600 appear nice for germination and cloning spaces, as well as side lighting larger plants. With the number of homes wanting more salad greens in their diet, your demonstration of using the SF300 to supplement window light would easily produce a moderate amount of greens. THANKS for this video on growing vegi starts on shelves! I saw one of your other videos on led grow lights and I appreciated the thoroughness & technical explanations, but I was wondering if it was mostly on lights that are strong enough for cannabis in grow tents, when I'll be only growing vegi seedlings to a reasonable size before spring planting, and maybe some year round basil etc. I'll be using two levels of a shelf / rack w/no grow tent. (I'm thinking of getting a rack that's 4' long and 18" wide from Costco, Trinity brand since we have one already & it's very sturdy.) While I don't mind spending a bit more for a powerful led unit that has a dimmer, I don't want to waste electricity.

    My first of your videos, & wow, I'm impressed at the analyses! And feeling a bit crushed because I hoped to be growing tomatoes 'with abandon' with the sf600. So, could you please elaborate? Another subscriber asked about "micro tomatoes" & you responded should be fine if following what you prescribed (ie, centre, 3 or so seedlings (I can't tell what size those 3 pots are)). I'm not familiar with micro tomatoes...is that cherry or grape? Thank you in advance for clarifying.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching! The challenge is that tomato plants can get huge. Moderate sized plants will require a significant amount of light for optimal growth. If you have purely artificial LED lighting, I would expect to devote at least 100W of power from the wall using a decent grow light. If the plants are in a super bright window, then that changes things quite a bit. The SF600 would certainly help out nicely when supplementing natural light. But each grower may have unique expectations when growing a tomato. Outdoors, I was able to pull 100 lbs of tomatoes from just 2 indeterminate plants last year.
      Those micro-tomotoes are supposed to be some sort of super small plants, like a dwarf plant or something. The fruit might also be small, like a cherry. But the plant itself is supposed to be small. I tried growing micro-tomato seeds, years ago, and was not impressed. The plant still tried to get large. So I don't know if it was a gimmick or what.

    • @staythecourse2927
      @staythecourse2927 Год назад

      @@Albopepper Thank you very much for that thorough answer. Got a bit more educated, to understand lingo (dwarf, bush, determinate) & also see the SF600 advertises itself re: "veg" & "flower" growth... (doh! to self) tomato is fruit of the plant. So...might be restricting myself to culinary herbs :)

    I have a question about the SF300 / SF600 PPFD charts. When you measured the distance, did you set the height from the top of the white light frame (wear the led strip is) or from the bottom of the white frame? There's about 1-inch difference between these areas. Thanks!

    The SpiderFarmer SF-600 is a decent linear-LED grow light. From the $60 plus dollar price range it sold for not too long ago, the price has just been raised to $109 dollars on Amazon, which makes it quite expensive for the footprint that this light provides. There are much better LED grow lights available at the $100 plus dollar price range.

    How incredibly timely! I've been considering a vertically stacked indoor grow setup for small pepper plant starts in 1020 trays, and literally just found these on Spiderfarmer's website yesterday. Most vertical rack setups I've seen use fluoro tubes, but I want to use LEDs for their efficiency. Like you said, the T5 fixtures + LED replacement tubes are pricey. There just aren't any ideal products out there catering to this... I'd love something like a 60 or 100 watt LED board with the diodes spread out over a large 2 ft x 4ft or 3 ft x 3 ft surface that I can have practically touching the plants, but it doesn't seem to exist.
    These SF300/600s were interesting but still don't quite hit the mark for me. With the lack of room for height adjustment in a rack, dimming would be a must. The diodes are still too concentrated, with the centre too bright compared to the edges at lower heights. Of course they also feature lower quality components compared to SF's other lights.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  3 года назад +2

      You bring up some excellent points! It's nice to see some market penetration in this lighting niche. But the product could benefit from some enhancements as you mentioned. For some growers it would work out great. But spacing out that double LED strip would have helped with light coverage at those lower distances. Perhaps we'll see other options in the future!

    Hi Al, could you please give a thought (or even review in a future video? :) ) this integrated home gardening system?
    "the-click-and-grow-25" from clickandgrow (seems that I can't post links)
    They use 2x16W LED lights and I wonder if that is strong enough or whether the lights are any good for growing leafy vegetables at all.
    I want to build something similar to what they offer myself with professional light and after viewing countless of your videos I fell in love with SF 3000 (or MG 3000) as it uses similar looking aluminium profile design. I thought I would take two out of the four for each shelf, but that still gives 150W - is it too strong? After seeing this video, I am not so sure about my choice any more. Is it an overkill for having the light 40 cm (15 in) above floor of the shelf (just like in the link)?

    Hi. I really love your reviews, thank you!!! I am looking for a long type of full spectrum LED grow lights for my indoor set up in my garage hanging over a large raised bed (100cm x 90cm) to grow lettuce, carrots, herbs, and if possible under these lights, peppers and tomatoes. I see from your review that the Spider Farmer sf300 (or 600) would be great for this, but are they good, as their advertisement says, for flowering and fruiting of harder to grow indoor veggies like peppers, tomato's, zucchini, broccoli for example?
    If you were growing these together in a raised bed, how would you do this- so as not to get some (lettuces) leaf burn, while others like peppers close enough of light to produce their fruits?
    Is it possible to mix them or better to keep them separate with a different light source? I’m not using a grow tent, only tin foul around them to help keep the lights concentrated inside.
    I already have a wonderful shop light fixture with high lumens and kelvins for germination which works perfectly. I’m looking to grow inside throughout the winter.
    Is the 300 unit good for peppers and tomatoes or can you suggest other models- with affordable premium price range?

      I saw the SF600 for $150 and was so furious that they're now exploiting customers. However.... Your question deserves a good answer. The SF300 & SF600 are a good form factor for window sills and narrow spaces. They're decent in shelves too, but the lack of a dimmer is a real turn off since you still need enough vertical space.
      When possible, I like the 1000 style square LEDs because they waste less light at the edges. Typically these are dimmable as well. And sometimes you can get 2 of those models for the price of a single SF600! For example, you would be MUCH better off buying two of VIPARSPECTRA's P1000 from this video: ruclips.net/video/WmjOSzSF-HI/видео.html You can dim them way down to use the same total power as a single SF600, but the coverage area would be even better! And they could be placed closer if needed.

    they should do a V-shape of the led-stripe to eliminate the hotspot in the middle and spread out the light. it would be a perfect shelf light then. (just few degrees would do it)

    Thanks for this great information. I’ve got a couple raised beds in the yard, but really want to control conditions for things that bolt in the late spring-brassicas, etc. Great help for decisions to come. Thanks.

    Awesome info! Was on Amazon just now looking to buy but couldn’t decide between 300 and 600. After watching this video, I know which one suits my setup better. Thanks!

    So, would these lights work well for veg? Or should i be using a more powerful light?

      Yes, they work for veg. You just need to use them as outlined in the video. It also depends on the specifics of your application.

    On lights like these, would there be any advantage to adding a reflective material to the underside of the shroud?

      That's a great question! I was wondering the same thing. It might be worth testing out to see!

      @@Albopepper I know there isn't a lot of upward light transmission but there is some to the sides.

      I use waterproof reflective duct tape and tape the tops of my dwc totes up and it actually reflects some light upward. Some is some right.

      Thanks for watching! This video was held up for release until they actually had stock on the SF300. Lights are a popular topic. But I want to do some other content as well. Out of curiosity, what topic are you interested in?
