Proxy vs Reverse Proxy Explained

    This video explains the difference between a forward proxy and a reverse proxy. A proxy server acts as a middleman between a private network and the internet, safeguarding the network by regulating traffic, blocking harmful websites, masking client IP addresses, logging user activity, bypassing content restrictions and commonly used for web data collection. A reverse proxy enhances security for servers by hiding their IP addresses, blocking malicious traffic, and implementing load balancing to distribute traffic evenly.

      I think in the future, forward proxys & reverse proxys should be integrated into one for better efficiency & reduced physical space usage.

      I've known this terminology for decades and always hated it. The reason you've had trouble figuring it out is that it is incorrect. A reverse proxy and forward proxy operate in exactly the same direction. A reverse proxy does not operate in reverse relative to a forward proxy. Other terms like "load balancer" and the newer (but still not new) "web application firewall" are much better. I could accept "server side proxy" but I don't think that's ever been a commonly used term

      An IT professional naturally thinks first about a group of clients while a software engineer naturally thinks first about the servers running the software. The name "reverse proxy" seems like it's based on an IT perspective. If I was in charge of naming everything in the world, I would flip the names "proxy" and "reverse proxy".

    Another instantaneously created fan here! Thanks for such a concise explanation. I've worked with proxies since a long time ago, but this was a very good explanation 👏
    For some reason, the "reverse" part in the name of the reverse proxy never "clicked" on my mind, but saying like you did, on protecting servers instead of clients makes so much sense!.
    I never read a previous documentation saying it like that, and I read quite some, it always says forwarding traffic, but again, the reverse forwarding is a convoluted way to say just forwarding.
    Thanks!!

    The main benefit of a forward proxy is while you can do filtering, blocking and logging on individual machines it is MUCH easier for the admin to config and manage it on one box. But it also makes a single point of failure if not configured correctly!

    The forward proxy example is more of a firewall and a proxy itself cannot hide the identity of a client as the forward headers still contain the info on who requested the data.

    • @davorzdralo8000
      @davorzdralo8000 6 месяцев назад +1

      So is the reverse proxy example, when in reality neither of them have anything to do with security. DDoS mitigation can be on reverse proxy, or not, that's completely beside the point, and "hiding IP addresses" of servers is not done because of security, it's mostly in order to distribute load over multiple servers transparently. All in all, pretty bad explanations.
