When the Normans invaded England, they almost entirely replaced the Anglo Saxon nobility, and particularly in the north of England they raided and plundered a lot. Lots of Anglo Saxon nobles fled the country to work as elite mercenaries for the Eastern Roman empire in the Varangian guard, maybe this treasure was buried by someone who fled in exile and hoped to one day return to get it back.
