Yes this jeweler is a font of knowledge, so appreciated. But the real stars of the gem pieces are the relatives who acquired these pieces. Oh my what taste and fortuitous purchases. Try finding such gems today, nearly impossible. Thx so much for bringing them to light.
I love every expert because they truly love their jobs. It's so refreshing to watch them, I love the way they speak with the visitors, overall it's just a great show.
It always amazes me the craftsmanship, beauty, but also the dual functionality of many Victorian pieces of jewelry! Stunning, yet practical. Those jade pieces are lovely!
Delightful episode. I enjoyed the content imagining the worth of some items now! Note: I loved seeing nicely dressed, well-behaved teens in the crowds. Those were the days my friends...
It's his job though...😊 But he did simpify the fourth item(s). That was a demi parure. A complete one would consist of earrings, necklace, bracelet(s), ring(s), brooch(es), and likely a tiara... Barbara Hutton style.
Something that would be really lovely for compilations like this would be a quick dating of each piece of footage - so we can know how to convert the estimated values more accurately haha
the emerald necklace does not have tin foil , For a bright base for the emeralds and old diamonds was done with polished fine silver which does not oxidize . 😎 retired jeweler
Even in the 30s? Is fine silver 100% silver as opposed to the 92.5%? Sorry to pick your ear, I used to be a jewellery store clerk (just in a mass produced/chain store) so always find this kind of thing very interesting as I would have always rather worked in a boutique or antique jewellers.
@@Franciboi fine silver is 999.9% and since there is no copper it stays like a mirror . It was used in Victorian times because the diamonds then were often flat on the bottom so without the silver they would reflect back poorly . Big problem is over the years dirt gets stuck between the diamond and silver leaving a problem of hard to clean jewellery not looking to it's potential . I would think in the thirties diamonds were cut more like today with a culet ( bottom inverted pyramid ). Usually you would have an opening (ajour) under the diamond to allow cleaning . Cleaning gemstones make them look lively as they should .cheers from Canada Francis .
Things must be very different in the UK from the U.S. My inherited pieces had to be appraised for probate, and all the jewelry had to be appraised for insurance.
I find it interesting that so many Brits date things according to Monarch reign - I'm going to start doing it with American Presidents and see how well it works... "This piece dates back to James K. Polk!" :)
The first emeralds--obviously the mother-in-law liked emralds. It would be interesting to know if she bought the jewelry maybe as an investment or if they were gifts to her
All these pieces today are worth EXPONENTIALLY more than what they’ve been appraised for in this vid. Some of the stones alone are worth several thousand, some tens of thousands individually.
@@AH-te5gsits probably to do more with the rights to post up newer content online because the tv channels in multiple countries still have broadcasting rights.
Me too! Even back when it was on I would think of the price of new diamonds rings and think surely that must be worth more with all those diamonds etc!
I'd love to know the prices in reference to what gold is worth now and inflation. There's not a chance in hell you'd pay anything close to 900 for the necklace at 12:28.
I don’t think they have a lot of footage as videos were very limited. I always look forward to the full hour listing but they always sneak in old footage. As good as this show is youed think they would have more the ratings had to be great just bad marketing probably

Africans had all of this and still do, they sell it, just like they sold their own people. Look at South Africa, now free from the tyranny of Apartheid and white rule only to become a complete failure. They had FOURTY YEARS of black rule in South Africa AFTER they threw out the whites and it is only worse off than it was in the 80s now. Were blacks exploited and subjugated? Yes, but they also cannot seem to govern themselves properly when left to their own means. Kind of like Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, and all of Africa and even many cities in America they all said they were being exploited by the Whites but when they evict the whites and govern themselves, they got less or worse. Meet the new boss, worse than the old boss. What was the name of that successful black ruled country that has no white involvement? Yeah, no such thing. If Black ruled African nations were so great then American blacks would be fleeing to Africa and that has NEVER happened. Well, there was Liberia and that also failed.

The gem stones themselves are available today, but try to find the same workmanship would be extremely rare and expensive.
I'm obsessed with the look of ye olde jewellery.... It's just so classic & stunning 😍 modern jewellery doesn't come close...

I adore old jewelry I’m obsessed with antique jewelry and furniture
What a lovely chap, such enthusiasms for jewelry.
The necklace at 4:40 or so is STUNNING
This dude is the most charming guy you could ask for. Absolutely lovely video because of his knowledge and interesting presentation style.
I'm absolutely smitten with this gentleman; he's adorable, graceful, and witty. He is incredibly charming, much like the jewelry he appraises.
When he opened up that ring into a bracelet, I audibly gasped. Absolutely gorgeous.
It always amazes me the craftsmanship, beauty, but also the dual functionality of many Victorian pieces of jewelry! Stunning, yet practical.
Those jade pieces are lovely!
The transformative, multi-functional nature of antique jewelry is really impressive. So creative and interesting!
I want ALL OF THESE!!! I’d wear them every day, every where! ❤❤❤
You'd probably get robbed sadly we can't have nice things these days..
John Benjamin is a gem!!❤❤
Amazing pieces of jewellery. Thank you.

That ring/bracelet is SO COOL.
Love it! Gorgeous!
@deborahmannino3775 well thankyou. Lol 😘
My favorite of all
I used to be a goldsmith and gem cutter. This jewelry is worth much more, the stones alone are worth more. Must be an old episode of the Roadshow.
1990-2009 was the run of this. So likely late 90s
I wish they'd do a caption stating the original date of transmission, it would help make sense of some of the valuations.
You can tell the earlier episodes as they were all indoors. John Benjamin, the expert, is noticeably younger in those.
Yes the art deco clips would be at least $10,000 US today.
Agree.
That snow flake is just to die for ❤
oh my! emerals and diamonds and gold! oh my!
That necklace is stunning beautiful in of it self without stones.
Back in the good old days.
This man is so good with jewellery 👍

On today’s market, they would be a much higher valuation. This is an old series.
The last bit, she immediately thought of her grandfather after hearing the value of the jade ring. ❤
What a brilliant story teller You dont realise that you are learnig I get excited when he is on
The large jade pendant at the end is likely 18th C due to the quality of the carving, and if so, worth around 50k

Incredible macro lenses for the time btw, this is 25 years ago and they have perfect focus on things millimeters across, nice work by those involved.
What adorable prices there have been............................
That big brown diamond and the two green blue must be worth a lot.
My favourite man on the roadshow!
Lovely looking lady with the snowflake brooch, so very English!
Brilliant Benjamin.
This probably aired 10 years ago! Double the values
Yr 2000. Like 24 yrs ago.
Undervalued !
These clips are sometimes decades old. The British Antiques Roadshow has been on for a very long time. No wonder they may be out of date.

Well you are supposed to value for probate. You don’t have to insure anything though?

No, there is no requirement to insure.
If i have those, id rather keep it than selling it. Give it to my nephew and niece...
But the insurance costs do add up.

I think we do name some historical items according to past presidents. Specially fashion dresses 👗. Etc

Would be nice to get some new content instead of the same clips in different collections again and again.
Dude. It's a show on PBS. Go watch PBS. See how complicated that was? That last part was rhetorical btw.

Because there is no new content obviously

Very old episode.
That first estimate of price for those emerald pieces seems low.. 😢
I agree with the other man here a lot of these gems are worth more than this.
12 karats of diamonds are worth wayyy more than the price stated
British reactions are so calm compared to us Americans!😂
The price before is affordable compare nowadays 🙂
The second lady was expecting much more than she was told😊

The Emeralds were under quoted and in no one mind, I would gave them option for what it was priced.

Honestly though, besides the medieval junkie and the jade woman, every single one of them seems pretty disappointed with the value.
8K for the first emerald necklace? Bro, you're under by half. HALF. ❤️🤙
I find that in the UK,it seems the jewelry on this show is very very often undervalued.

This must be old because the value of gold has absolutely skyrocketed over the past 20 years. Hmm.

Um, I’m going to say the estimates on this stuff is pretty low.

Man, British people get some REAL nice jewelry.. shame they end up selling it for so little and it going to scrap. What a waste of craftsmanship.

I think the jewelry is wholly under valued by the show.
This is an older clip, so values are probably higher in 2024.

You have to bear in mind that the videos were filmed between 2000 and 2009. The valuations bear no relation to the price they would receive today.
