    I had a very similar DA-45HR in a while ago where the power supply PCB was smashed into two pieces! Repair process was quite similar to what you've done here. I do like the error count readout, very useful feature.

      Super glue or epoxy for the pcb?
      You could say it was a cracking pcb :-D

      I think that some of these errors are recoverable with the CRC checksum at the end of each block... Also it may well be that the player detects no errors if the tape is rewind and play again...

      @@StillCloser I have a Sony PCM-R300 which also comes with a realtime error display. It can display both heads' BLER simultaneously. It's a very useful tool to assess recording quality.

    Hi from the US! I’m newly subscribed and wanted to tell you a little about myself and my history with these machines. I’m a Gen Z, but there’s something about this older technology that fascinates me. I repair machines like these as a hobby with my dad, but occasionally there’s a problem that we’re not sure how to fix it, and that’s where these videos come into play. (Also for entertainment.) Great videos and it’s really nice to see you get these things fixed!

    Yes, we had one at our transmitter site it was there for "Dead Roll" in case we lost the studio to transmitter link.

    It was the advent of cheap CDR disks that led to the replacement of the DAT. When you could record mixes (or live) direct to a computer based recording system, due your mix and edits in the software and save the finished project to CDR it was faster and less expensive than having DAT machines and tapes. The CDRs could also be played on standard CD and DVD players so were more universal in their playback compatibility. Some DATs wouldn't playback properly on machines made by other manufacturers. Mostly due to head mis-alignment. The Sony, HHB, and Fuji tapes seemed to be most reliable in my experience. I used mostly Sony and HHB DAT tapes. I had mixed results with the Scotch, Fuji and Ampex brand tapes. It probably had more to do with the different source recording machines rather than the tape formulations as some machines used slightly different sub command codes that would not playback properly on different brand machines if these codes were encoded on the DAT tapes. Such commands could cause different machines to mute tracks or stop play during reproduction. I personally preferred open reel masters to DAT masters but usually had both archived until CDR's took over. Then multiple CDR master copies took the place of both the open reel and DAT master copies.

    I think thermal paste can expire. I use Arctic MX-5, which is computer grade thermal paste.

      No, it doesn't. It can seperate from the base. Just stir it up and good to go.

    I would maybe add an input dropper resistor to lower some of the dissipation of the regulator.
    Or stick a small fan in the back to lower the heatsink temprature a bit.
    Something like that.

      Probably lasted 30 years as it was, seems a cost effective repair just to replace the component when it fails.

    Why do the regulators fail?.

    • @zulumax1
      @zulumax1 3 года назад +2

      Thermal cycling, they run very hot because of the large amount of current they have to dissipate which stresses metal parts inside the semiconductor device as well as the solder joints that attach them. Some believe it is better to leave equipment on all the time for this reason. Then again heat dries out electrolytic capacitors causing them to fail, so that is not really a good option either.
