You always have such insightful videos. My granddaughter is ready for some kind of meat birds. I've suggested quails. I can't remember, how to do too much for them. I've told her about your channel. She's getting her area ready for them, or rabbits. She said, "Granny, im still researching" I'm so proud of her. She's 16, gardening, canning, dehydrating and now wanting to get her own meat birds. Well, she be 16 in December. All of the grandchildren are awesome.. But she's, really trying so hard. So, thank you and Nancy, for your awesome time lapse videos. You are a wonderful teacher. Peace to you and yours.
Birds are brutal, lots of folks don't know that. Good job explaining bird behavior, and what to do to keep the hens from being constantly brutalized. Even though you're raising them for meat and eggs, glad you're keeping them in a humane manner. Will they every get to go outside? Thanks for sharing!
I have been following your channel for quite some time. I have raised quail for three years. Your information is invaluable. Thank you so much.
Blessings to you guys from Colorado Springs! May we all be ready, but also humane to each other tomorrow. Let’s cultivate a new love for humanity.
Those are pretty birds. I learned a lot. I knew nothing about all this. Thank you for the knowledge.
Just said a prayer. Hoping you're both ok. I love watching your videos
Awe......they are so pretty!!
Y'all are so blessed! I know nothing about quail but chickens can over breed like that too. God bless y'all. And hugs to Bing Bing. 😊
Thank you and Nancy for making this series of videos on Quail. We had White Plymouth Rock and Bantems chickens on our dairy farm. A lot of people dont know just how aggressive foul can be or any animal for that matter.
Yes, they can be aggressive. We harvested all of our barred rock roosters. They were so mean!! They attacked us every time we turned our back on them to walk away. We only have two Rhode Island Red roosters now. They don’t bother us at all
You are right. I have been raising quail 10 years. It can be a mess. I do not suggest Texas A & M .The Breed you have is great. . Best of luck.
Thanks for showing us the birds , the male and the female wow that is beautiful y'all doing such a great job God bless you
Are you guy alright? Take care..waiting for your updates.
I am sure Nancy has some good recipes for those roosters. Yum yum.
I've never had quail but I hatched 17 chicks this spring and 12 were roosters. Even though we never made it to breeding age, those girls were so happy when I finally culled those boys. Fortunately we found several of them farms, so not all went to being meat.
Hollis and Nancy you two are great I have been following you when y'all were in Virginia I just got me 4 females and 1 male last Friday they were 3 days old when I got them, they are so much fun to watch. Can't wait till they start laying.
I like your cage set up
💯I feel like if your chickens produce plenty of eggs & you store them properly- you'll never be without protein & won't need to kill them....
I love to see the sweet quails
My daddy loved to bird hunt...quail and doves. My mom would fry them up and make gravy and simmer them in the gravy...mmmm!!
I was wondering about the 1:5. I think that's still a bit aggressive. I think we kept 1 rooster for 10-15 hens. I appreciate you sharing the good, the bad, the ugly. Getting back to Source, there'll be a lot of learning for all of us in the process.
love this video so much Hollis!! I have been watching you and Nancy for a couple years, started with all the gardening. I am now on our own Homestead and we do similar things as you both! Keep up the great videos! I love your new Homestead (i know you have been there a while)
Thank you so much for watching and congratulations on your new homestead 👍. Plenty more videos coming❤️
Sorry to hear about your birds. My wife and I would love to visit your homestead one day. We've learned a lot from your videos. God bless.
I'm looking forward to starting my own.
Like to get a jump on the learning before starting. God Bless
You work is so appreciated... Love y'all
Just got some quail today! Thanks for your content.
Thank you for willing to share. May Gods face smile upon you!!!
Bing Bing, you cutie! Hope you are all ok❤️
Hope you get a big turkey leg Thursday!
Great info !
Very interesting ... I didn't know the difference in the males and females. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing its always nice to learn new stuff. I love all the hard work you put into your builds totally awesome work that you know is gonna last. Love love love you guys gods continue blessing upon you
Hello Hollis and Nancy, are you two ok?
Hey Hollis an Nancy enjoyed this video live in an apartment no room for birds lol but really like watching u guys Tennessee dude here 67 yrs old same age as Hollis I think. God Bless be safe
I have a suggestion for you. Plant daikon and peas together in the winter to improve the soil. Just leave (most of) them in the ground to rot. I think they might self seed each year.. You can grow water melon (and other things) right in them without working the soil.. Would improve your soil each year for almost free.
I know the peas roots send out nitrogen into the ground. If you have more info on this. I would like to know, thanks.
Love my quail's , and just not for eating , is a shame they are almost gone in the wild !!! 😢😢😢😢
Well, the solution to that is to raise some just for releasing.
They'll fly to where they need to be.
When I was a kid in sw Arkansas we had an abundance of wild quail. Fire ants moved in and the quail vanished. Road runners gone too.
Thanks for sharing with us. 👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
interesting to learn all this about birds, nice videos. Your work is so appreciated thanks Hollis and Nancy.
I was just thinking about you guys and wondered how things are going on the homestead. I'm sorry that you lost the quail and had a tough lesson. Thanks for sharing! Happy Thanksgiving!
God bless you! Thank you!
I had 5 hen to one rooster and he was over breeding the hens, I have 10 hens to one rooster now and that seems to have a better result
That’s about right
A very helpful, Educational video. we look forward to the Processing videos.
Thank you for watching. Processing video coming in a couple of weeks
I really like your quail hutch. I’ve been looking at designs to build one myself.
There is a blue cream that most feed stores or tractor supply carries that you apply to the back of the head that will help heal that bloody wound because if you don’t take care of it they will continue to peck at it
Wow that was interesting...feel bad you lost some hens...but it's good to know...thanks for sharing!
Very interesting, thank you.
Thank you
Thank you!
Time to make a gravy with them.
Great job
Hugs from across the miles, I promise I won’t send any snow from Michigan. Lol
If I have this right, culled ones get harvested, 2nd batch is in incubator, then brooder,
then into empty pen. At that time you have a couple weeks before the 2nd batch
starts beating each other up and a decision has to be made as to which ones to
keep out of all of them and harvest the rest? Seems like a Whole lot of record keeping
on which are good layers, aggressive nature, and age...... on a whole bunch'o birds
that all look the same. 🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔
TYFS, Stay Safe and Well
Mark and Rosa
You got it Mark. After a couple of rounds the schedule got real easy. If you remember on the video I made on the brooder I showed a dry erase board mounted on the wall. I keep track of status for the birds on that board. It is not as difficult as it may seem.
@@HollisNancysHomestead Winner, Winner.....Quail Dinner. 😋😋😋
Subscribed nice series on quail!
Welcome to the family ❤️❤️🐶
@@HollisNancysHomestead thank you! We just recently added quail to our little homestead.
Bad quail go to Camp Kenmore.
😂😂😂
I put a WYZE camera in the cage so I can watch the hens and the rooster behavior. Wi-fi is required. Check out the WYZE website. Cameras available for $20 each.
The hardest part of having Quail. :(
Great content, Thank you!
I want to save the skin to render for fat, do you have a suggestion for plucking versus skinning quail? Ty
There are some great electric pluckers out there for quail. They aren’t very expensive from what I remember. Google it, you will find several to choose from👍
Hi Hollis my wife and I are moving from Los Angeles to Spring branch Texas in the hill country. The grow climate is a 9B and we were wondering if a garden will do well in this area. We will be doing raised beds because of the earth is really rocky and hard. Do you think we will have success thank you for any advice and as always we love your videos God bless you.
You will do great with the raised beds. May I highly recommend container gardening to go with it. Much easier to maintain and a perfect choice for poor soil and high temps
@Wayne Landry - As Big TX would say. - Howdy Folks. Welcome to TX from your north central TX neighbor!
Ahhh, you gonna kill dem pooo little boydies?
When’s the BBQ?
With the hutches next to each other, doesn't the crowing bother the hens?
I keep my biggest birds for breeding, I hatch my biggest eggs.
I would presume that the back of their heads is not the only thing that has been 'banged up'! 😅
Hollis - How do you tell if a egg is ok to eat & which one is fertilize?
Fertile eggs can be eaten, no problem.
instead o having door to pin go up and down make it side to side as to not have a big oppening to get out,,,workks better
I have 1 male for 10 females.. they keep biting fingers of others quails legs.. how do I avoid this?
Can you raise Blue Quail
HELLO 🦋 Hey where you guys at? there have been no postings are you on vacation? Missing the videos
We’ll be back next Thursday ❤️
Glad to read this! Missing the videos and was getting worried about you guys.
I have 5 females and one male. This morning I went out to feed and the male had a huge hole ripped in my hens hide almost all the way around her neck. Unfortunate.
Why no shows for over a week.
when the heads on the hens ever get blood on it, all of them will peck at that bird until it is dead
You tokk out all of the roosters?
This is a hen look at his colors it’s a rooster. Thanks for explaining that confusing statement lmao
That isn't what he said. Watch and listen.
rabbits have more meat on them
Can't you release your abundance into the wild,to replenish our lands.
Don't all your males fight each other in the same cage
Not with the correct ratio
No such word as “quailS.”
Singular and plural form of the word “quail.”
