Love this. I have both a a Dish and an Umbrella and I love them both equally. But if I HAD to pick one. I would go with the Dish. I just love the drama and the look it can achieve
Photo-Me-Ike definitely understand! However I’ve always been in love with how the modelling light looks on the model’s face and I feel like the umbrella imitates that, but 100 times nicer 😍
The Beauty dish is twice the size of the Models face, so closer is softer, thanks for sharing your lighting preferences and lovely resulting Images Anita, and the Models freckles are to die for
The Beauty Dish was designed to be a headshot modifier that could be used in a limited space for consistent results by providing a full face wrap. To wrap light around the face means using it very close, within 1.5 x the dish diameter or closer. The hole in the center is to shoot through so the wrap is in all angles. It should be used on a parallel plane with the face. If one is doing a lot of head shots or comparison shots for makeup examples the Beauty Dish is the easiest way to get consistent shadowless faces. It is also effective in jewelry or other product images due to the shadowless wrap of light around a smaller object that would normally have hotspots. A very different look will be seen if the Dish is used as intended, you might like it. It is a great tool for some jobs but does not do everything, so it is not a do-everything-well modifier. The big umbrella is very nice when there is a controlled background, a white seamless for example but where the light spill needs to be controlled, softboxes, gridded spots, strip boxes, or other constrained pattern sources are the answer. The big umbrella requires a lot of space and some ceiling hight but has a very nice quality of light. A smaller umbrella can be used a lot closer to the subject to get light fall off according to the Inverse Square Law if the background needs to be less exposed
Are you a photography teacher? I like that you threw in the inverse square law...LOL. What about the Scheimpglug principle? JK, the things you speak of are truth.
Are you sure you aren't talking about a ring flash? In particular a beauty dish doesn't have a hole in the middle to shoot through? Everything you say is correct (shadowless, macro, etc.) for a ring flash, for a beauty dish less so...
Size is always relative to the distance of the modifier to the subject. Normally you use a beauty dish much closer for that reason. 50-70cm or so. Thank you nevertheless for your comparrison.
amazing videos... would of loved to see the exact same pose instead of one face dead straight the other looking to the right...just for a better comparison for the shadows...great shots all in all. and useful well explained information. thanks keep it up!
I agree at that distance, the beauty dish is very snappy, but in the set up that you have in the video, the two modifiers together would produce a less contrasty result, as the umbrella would act as your fill. It's the setup we used back in the day with a barrel light, an awesome modifier that hasn't come back...yet.
Check the models eyes at around 3:00 in the movie. In the umbrella version of the picture, in the light reflection in her eyes, you can actually see the shadow of Anita. Not sure if that was the intention, but a nice little detail.
If you think about it, a beauty dish and an umbrella are basically the same thing... The nice thing about the beauty dish is that you can position it very close, this gives you different falloff characteristics due to the inverse square law. Umbrellas are not as precise but are bigger which makes them easy to use in more situations.
Great ideea, Anita. Could you also compare silver reflective umbrella vs white reflective ? I am on the fence on this one since I want a softer light than the silver offers
Thank you so much for this video Anita! I’ve been wondering which would be best overall. I actually purchased the Glow large umbrella because of your last video with it and I can see I made the right choice! Beautiful comparison both ways, but I definitely love the soft glow of the umbrella 😍
Wow, I came to see the model, but I liked you more Anita. 😊 But really the orange dot in Cathy's left eye is so unique. She must be the only one in the world like that. If I meet her I will keep her forever. 🤗
Bardzo dziękuję za ten film. Jest bardzo pomocny. Ja jestem raczej zwolennikiem Beauty Dish'a, choć teraz mam ochotę spróbować takiej dużej parasolki i jakie efekty uzyskam. Dzięki raz jeszcze.
Love your work Anita. What head are you using for the umbrella? In terms of power? Is it the Profoto 1000 Monobloc, or the Profoto 500 Monobloc? Or something else? Thanks :)
All your videos are amazing! Thanks!!! I think, it will be great, if your viewers will send photos that they wants to see how to create them. For example, l love to see different studio lightning schemes and I would like to watch them more))))
There is a good Comparison of Profoto Umbrella's on their blog here - profoto.com/uk/profoto-stories/truthfully-now-how-much-difference-is-there-between-a-white-silver-and-translucent-umbrella-deep Keep in mind that the blog post compares using Small Umbrellas but the "type" of difference (for example more/less contrast, luminosity and transition of shadows/highlights, ) will be consistent across umbrellas of the same size. To answer your question, a Profoto white umbrella of the same size produces a softer light, with less contrast, in comparison to the silver version. The colour temperature is also warmer.
I’m a big fan of both beauty dishes and umbrellas, it just depends on one’s workflow more than anything. Have you tried a MOLA yet? They’re my fav modifiers currently, other than the Broncolor Paras ;) #TeamBroncolor
When buying the light/lamp itself.. Especially for beauty photography. What are things you need to look out for? Can anyone recommend any good tutorials / advise videos on the lighting itself?:)
Nice video. Was wondering if the light gets blocked from the umbrella by you standing in front of it during shooting? The umbrella is so big, is it possible to set it up without the photographer standing in front of it? To me, it seems to defeat the purpose. - Novice photographer.
It's a fair question, and it is asked very often. With that large of a light source, the light will wrap around you if you are between light source and the subject. You could set up the the umbrella differently, but then you are getting a different image (change in angle, more/less shadow, etc.)
bernie Mac A white BD is completely different to a silver BD. White is great for beauty photography and silver is better suited to fashion. But really the only way to find out what works for you is to try both. Likwise for umbrellas, where white gives a nice soft light that's very flattering and forgiving compared to the more crisp quality of a silver umbrella. You can get a reasonably close approximation of what a silver or white beauty dish might look like by using a small silver or white umbrella that is partially collapsed (ie. not fully extended). It's a handy way of trying things out before investing in a more expensive BD.
It would be the same as a white umbrella versus a silver umbrella: the silver provides a little more in the highlights because the silver reflector gives the light slightly more punch. On another note, a beauty dish is meant to be used much closer ( it loses most of the effect if the light is more than a meter from the subject.)
People have been using modifiers in ways other than what they were created to do for aeons. Experimentation is the cornerstone of photography. There are staples then there's stepping outside of that for possibly something fantastic and new. We don't all have to colour within the lines. Photographers use Beauty Dishes as typical softboxes further than 2 feet away more and more these days with great results. Makes no sense telling them they're not using their modifiers correctly.
The way you used the beauty dish on this vidéo is a complete non sens... First it is a little one. Second, for beauty you have to use it much closer from you subject. Putting the beauty dish at the same distance as the umbrella means that you compare two lighting sources with radical diameter difference... Then it is normal that you have harder high lights and shadows on the beauty dish...
You aren’t using the beauty dish correctly. It shouldn’t be so far away. It should be very close to the subject, not as far as you have it. Of course if you use it at the same distance as the umbrella, it’s going to be MUCH harder since it’s so much smaller. But for real beauty it should be within arms reach from the model’s face. D
PEPE A good starting point would be to use the diameter of the beauty dish as your distance from your subjects face and perhaps even as much as 2x the diameter (but not more, unless you have a specific lighting effect in mind).
I noticed that many are suggesting that you are using the BD incorrectly ... why not do a video comparison showing the difference between the way were using the BD and the results the way many commentors are suggesting that it should be used
that model is ridiculously attractive like wow
I fall in Love immediately

You brought more valuable insights in one comment than 90% of RUclips photography videos in 2 videos. Thank you for this sum up
Are you sure you aren't talking about a ring flash?

Everything you say is correct (shadowless, macro, etc.) for a ring flash, for a beauty dish less so...
You might want to try using both the umbrella (or any larger modifier) and beauty dish on axis together. I think you'll like it.
Good suggestion. When photography jewellery for beauty, it's common to use a large/soft light as a base layer and then add hard lights for sculpting.
Size is always relative to the distance of the modifier to the subject. Normally you use a beauty dish much closer for that reason. 50-70cm or so. Thank you nevertheless for your comparrison.
To Pierre's point, would you be willing to move the beauty dish closer and reassess if your opinion changes?
I was also wondering if maybe some diffusion was used on both modifiers would s as he like the beauty dish more!? 🥰♥️
She*
silver beauty dish is super contrasty. the white beauty dish is so much softer

Ordered my first 65" umbrella after watching this outstanding video! Thanks

I've found the beauty dish far away becomes very much a spot light and a lot less flattering.
It's just a different quality of light. Not for everyone.
I definitely prefer the silver umbrella, the beauty of the lights and shadows is incredible
She's so beautiful! I was going to buy a beauty dish but might reconsider and get a big umbrella!
That was awesome 💚
One of your best work 💞
The dish will give you better results if it's about an arm length from the subject.
If you think about it, a beauty dish and an umbrella are basically the same thing... Thumbs up for that outstandingly beautiful model.
The model is gorgeous..
Great ideea, Anita. Could you also compare silver reflective umbrella vs white reflective ? I am on the fence on this one since I want a softer light than the silver offers
Then you're not on the fence lol. Get the white (unless you already got it as this was 8 months ago lol).
i love the model
Thank you so much for this video Anita! I’ve been wondering which would be best overall. I actually purchased the Glow large umbrella because of your last video with it and I can see I made the right choice! Beautiful comparison both ways, but I definitely love the soft glow of the umbrella 😍
LaToya Santos amazing! So happy to hear you’re happy with your choice! Hope you love it as much as I do ☺️

Michał Piotrowski Ja tez bylam, a teraz bez parasolki zyc nie mogę! Powodzenia w testach :)
Biggest takeaway is the flags on each side. Great video
Nice, can so is this a parabolic or normal umbrella? x
Love your work Anita. What head are you using for the umbrella? In terms of power? Is it the Profoto 1000 Monobloc, or the Profoto 500 Monobloc? Or something else? Thanks :)
Thank you for sharing those information, Anita!
your voice is so relaxing! nice model, nice result!

i loove your videos!! hello from spain, mallorca
Love your work!
Do you have a similar sized white umbrella to do a comparison video between those two?
There is a good Comparison of Profoto Umbrella's on their blog here - profoto.com/uk/profoto-stories/truthfully-now-how-much-difference-is-there-between-a-white-silver-and-translucent-umbrella-deep

Nice Video! I like the look even SOOC. I would lean towards the Beauty Dish ever so slightly though. 🤔
GStreet I think at the end of the day it’s just a matter of preference!
Anita Sadowska Absolutely and Good to have Choices 😀
I prefer deep XL white Profoto umbrella over silver xlarge one!
Can we use these light modifiers with a C Stand and light mounted on it?
Great video. Thanks.
great video:)
loved the video anita model is very natural n beautiful like ur photography.
Paresh Ghole lol thank you :p

i want to know diff btw white and grey beauty dish ?
Thanks for the video, it’s so well explained 😀
Shen Tan happy you found it informative!
Very interesting comparison
Nelson M. Thank you :)
I've been looking at these 2 for on location work. Would the results would be similar to in studio?
Thank you ! .
Deliciosas fotografias!!!!!!. ((Anita Sadowska!!)
I prefer an umbrella but I like white over silver. Silver does give more "punch" but I'm still on the fence as far as the look goes.
When buying the light/lamp itself.. Especially for beauty photography. What are things you need to look out for? Can anyone recommend any good tutorials / advise videos on the lighting itself?:)
I tend to favor the umbrella. It has a bigger more defined catchlight.
Piekna artystka , wspaniala kobieta .Good day .

Is the a normal silver, or the " soft silver" umbrella?
i'm loving you
Great video ,what's the transmitter on the camera?
Haim Green I would have to ask, it was the studio’s one!
Nice video. Was wondering if the light gets blocked from the umbrella by you standing in front of it during shooting? The umbrella is so big, is it possible to set it up without the photographer standing in front of it? To me, it seems to defeat the purpose.

Ja to widze, ze pani Sadowska to calkiem fajna jest!
What’s the size of the beauty dish?
Model looking like a thick Angelina Jolie… Great review!
Muy bueno!
Javier Fuentes Fotografía y Video thank you :)
Anita i love you
Interesting Anita. 💯💯💯👌🏽🙏🏽
Medfayer thanks!
Would the white beauty dish give an inbetween the 2?

Nestor Correa thanks so much my friend :)
Wow.. 😊😊😊💖💖💖📷📷📷
The BD is waaaaay too far away to work as its supposed to. You are using it as a standard hard light reflector

Agreed
Beauty dishes are definitely a drag, one shoot you got vogue level stuff the next shoot it looks like you took pics with a flashlight 🤯
lol
Very strange comparison. The umbrella is big, and the dish is small. It was necessary to take the same size.
Shouldn’t the beauty dish be a lot closer to the talent?
Errr just move the beauty dish closer....
Angelina jolie feels
The umbrella is a lot further back than ‘a metre to metre and half’.
Your comparison is very inaccurate due to the fact that the beauty dish is meant to be used at about arms length from the model not 8 feet.
Beauty dish way to far away from subject
This is a pretty bad comparison though
The beauty dish is TOO FAR.
Your beauty dish is waaaayyy out of position. Not a fair comparison.
Thank you 👍🏻
