    UPDATE: Upon further examination I believe it is probable that instead of resetting to neutral and then back to left again, he actually just reaches the lower quadrant for a down-left SDI. The way the character moves is extremely similar to a straight left input. Apologies for the mistake.

    • @cise3895
      @cise3895 3 года назад +15

      The reason the down component of the input is so minute is because when you do a cardinal -> diagonal SDI, the game doesn’t read the 45 degree angle like shown in the video. It actually reads a very shallow angle closer to the cardinal than the diagonal notch. Similarly, when you do neutral -> diagonal -> cardinal, it will not read a strictly vertical/horizontal angle, but a shallow angle _close_ to it.
      A JP player named Ichigo has a graphic for this, but I heard my comment might get deleted if I post a link. There should be a Google Sites for it if you look up “quarter circle SDI Ichigo”

      I was wondering about that resetting to neutral part. Flicking the control-stick with a Gamecube Controller with no snapback is already hard enough as it is, but doing it multiple times in the span of 0.2 seconds ON REACTION is just impossible.

    • @salatv8228
      @salatv8228  3 года назад +34

      It’s definitely possible! You have a 5 frame window to SDI fox’s shine. Two SDI inputs away sends you quite far, so peach can likely get her shield up, and even just one SDI input inwards crosses up fox and makes it difficult for him.

    In the first knee (0:50), does Wizzy end up pointing the left stick up (or maybe up left-ish due to the knee's 32 degree base trajectory) to get optimal TDI? I wasn't sure if he makes sure to aim for that, but I would think it's much more impactful than SDI.
    Then also, why would he ASDI up? Shouldn't he do it left (not saying it's easy, but am I wrong in thinking that that's better?)?

    awesome breakdown!! out of curiosity, what would be the most optimal way to SDI these sorts of moves then? i was under the impression i should just be rolling the stick between two diagonals, but seems like i have a bunch of misconceptions if the king of sdi himself is going to neutral

    • @salatv8228
      @salatv8228  3 года назад +1

      It’s hard to say, because it depends on how many SDI inputs you need for the situation, depends on your controller, depends on what’s comfortable for you, etc. Personally I like to try to time the SDI rather than just wanking my controller, cause my fingers aren’t very fast. If you do that, ideally you start with a cardinal direction, and then move to the diagonals. Also, I probably should’ve mentioned this in the video, but returning to neutral doesn’t have to be exactly in the center. The neutral zone for SDI is quite big, so you can actually just go inwards like halfway, and then go back to a cardinal.

    • @cise3895
      @cise3895 3 года назад

      A bit late, but if your stick is in the neutral zone, then rolling between the two diagonals is almost optimal. It’s actually better to smash/roll the stick a little bit above/below a diagonal. Say you want to SDI left, then optimal would be neutral -> slightly below up-left -> slightly above down-left -> slightly below up-left, and so on.

  • @Thomas-nz4si
    @Thomas-nz4si 3 года назад +3

    Its little known in the Melee scene, but the way Wizzy actually does this is called wank di. Instead of moving the control stick directly, you actually hold the control stick in place with your thumb while rapidly shaking the actual controller, keeping a very loose grip with your left hand and a firm grip with your right hand. Its a fairly common technique in Smash 64 because there is no di in 64, there's only sdi, so in order to even be a top player in that game it requires you to have solid sdi.
    I hate to say this, and I like that you show the inputs, but don't make a video explaining something you don't actually have an understanding of.
