I think it's just that these journos use AI to make articles very quickly now to spam more useless articles and player count has been news worthy a few times this year with Palworld, Helldivers and Shadow of the Erdtree. So the AI must think player count = views. At the same time the massive player drop is mostly because the game is especially popular in China and not that much anywhere else so that's why the player count spike is massive.

People keep saying it's so much more popular than Elden Ring since the player count was like 3 times the peak but almost nobody I know actually bought Wukong. On my friendlist, 26 played Elden Ring, 2 played Wukong. I don't even know what else came out at the same time, maybe they got a good release window, being the most sold game actually doesn't mean much. The game did sell very well but I'd be curious to see the actual numbers outside of China.
