Hello Darling is Conway Twitty, The Outlaw in Jesse's dream is Waylon Jennings, The Red Headed Stranger is Willie Nelson. The Man in Black and Folsom Prison Blues are both referring to Johnny Cash.
This song hits harder once you are familiar with the repertoire of each reference. Legends all, and RIP King George . Who’s gonna fill yours? Impossible.
List of legends referenced in this song: The Outlaw that walks through Jessi's dreams - Waylon Jennings and his wife Jessi Colter Red Headed Stranger - Willie Nelson Man in Black/Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash Okie from Muskogee - Merle Haggard Wabash Cannon Ball - Roy Acuff Blue Suede Shoes and Elvis - Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley Jerry Lee and Charlie - Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich Go Cat Go - Carl Perkins Luke the Drifter/I Saw the Light - Hank Williams Sr. Marty, Hank, and Lefty - Marty Robbins, Hank Snow, Lefty Frizzell This song was released in 1985, and the only ones mentioned who weren't living at the time were Hank Williams Sr, Marty Robbins, Hank Snow, and Lefty Frizzell. Everybody else were still alive. Unfortunately only two people referenced in this song remain today. Jessi Colter and Willie Nelson.. Jerry Lee Lewis recently passed away back on Oct 28th of last year. Thankfully Willie is still with us. Hope he's with us for as long as he can be. Kinda surprised that he outlived many other legends. He's been around for forever, and has looked old for like the past 40-50 years, it seems.
Not to argue with you, or show disrespect to the great Hank Snow, but I would think the Marty, Hank, and Lefty line refers to Hank Thompson. Just my thought...
I enjoy your reactions. Your intelligence shows through. I remember hearing this song when it came out in the 80's. My reaction was that their shoes will be filled by Clint Black, Alan Jackson and George Strait, among many others. They are now the older generation of country music. Tex Ritter had a recording in the early '60's called "Hillbilly Heaven". It was very similar to this, but a generation earlier. I remember hearing it when I was a child, and the only names I knew were Hank Williams and Will Rogers.
Outlaw in Jessis dream-Waylon Jennings Red Headed Stranger-Willie Nelson Man In Black-Johnny Cash Hello Darlin- Conway Twitty Walbash Cannonball- Roy Accuff Memphis Boys-Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis,Carl Perkins Ol Charlie-Charlie Rich Luke The Drifter-Hank Williams Old Marty, Hank and Lefty- Marty Robbins, Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzel
@@marshallvermillion6640 there is only one ''hank'' that is an immortal in hillbilly music. we both know who that is. hank snow is great . but we're talking about mr. williams here.
I love your country music reaction videos. Maybe George Jones didn't realize it at the time he put the song out, but he was one of those very people he was singing about. Nobody will ever fill his shoes, either. I'd love to see what you think of Marty Robbins "El Paso". Great song. George mentioned Marty Robbins in this song. Thank you for your videos. Look forward to them. You're pretty awesome.
You should go back and watch the video that was done for this song. As he sings it their pictures pop up and with autographs. It made me cry the first time i heard it sung because the old country of the 40s-90s. What they call country now is mostly pop country or bubblegum country. I wonder what most of the new country stars actually sound like without auto tune. Can they carry a tune in a water bucket stand up on the stage and with just the guitar, banjo, fiddle, steel guitar, piano and sing without auto tune to make them sound good. You notice the women are thin, pretty the men 6’ good looking but can they truly sing? Id say at least 75% cant not without auto tune to make them sound good.
i love your reactions, your very articulate in your words, and yes this music today is garbage. i always say no matter what type of music it is, if it doesnt make you feel something, then its not music, no matter the genre, its just noise. keep em coming brother!!! awesome another group you should check out is the canadian tenors. just beautiful!!
This song is giving roses to the GOAT’s. Red headed stranger is Willie Nelson, Man in black is Johnny Cash, Oakie from Muskogee is of course Merle Haggard, and Hello darling is Conway Twitty. And I think when he says “like the outlaw who walks through Jessi’s dreams” he is referring to Jessi Colter who was married to Waylon Jennings.
Luke the Drifter is Hank Williams Sr, also mentioned is Marty (Robbins) Lefty (Frizzell) Walbash Cannon ball refers to both Boxcar Willie and Roy Acuff. I also remember a references to Carl Perkins and Elvis. I am sure there are some I missed. I grew up during the 60s and 70s and both of my parents loved country music while my sister and I were listening to The Rolling Stones, Doobie Bros, and Kiss!
Great reaction as always :-) Johnny Cash is The Man in Black, he even wrote a song about it (same title) ;-) You should check it out ❤️🔥 Johnny Cash was the first concert i ever went to. :-) Along the same lines as this Jones song, check out GOAT Alan Jackson's title track off his latest album, "Where Have You Gone" (official video) ❤️ Beautiful tribute. Alan's a class act-love him! 26 number one hits under his belt, most he wrote. Living legend
Bro, No One Can Fill Their Shoes. These Boys were Legends. Just like their Never be a BB King, Elvis. Chubby Checker, Hank Williams Sr. And so on. Legends in their Own Time.
Willie is the redheaded stranger, johnny cash, Conway Twitty , Merle Haggard.. This is what gets me.. My Pop-Pop raised me on old country.. my husband is older than me and he grew up on this stuff with his parents.. This is true country music.. So many ppl think today that country music started with Garth Brooks.. I love Garth but country music has so much history.. And George Jones.. the Possum.. amazing
This is a great song and one of my favorite's by george jones you need to look up the video made with this song it shows you a lot of pictures of the people he is singing about
I agree that it's a generational thing or at least it was more so at the time this song was released. Up until the 80s and early 90s, listeners grew up on the music their parents played and their parents primarily heard what was on the radio and what that music influenced them to buy. Listeners heard what record companies fed them. At the same time, even the legendary artists mentioned in this song became legendary for being groundbreaking. They were doing new things that set them above and beyond others of their own time. This part still holds true now, even though artists are going further out on a limb to distinguish themselves. The advent of media sharing and streaming is the biggest change. Now anyone who wants to call themselves an artist can throw something at the wall and see what sticks. In some ways this a great, since it opens creative doors. In other ways, the amount of competition is so much higher, that amazingly talented artists can get lost in the wash. Just my take.
Johnny Cash is The Man in Black. He used to sing for prisoners sometimes. Once when Johnny sang to them, Merle said that's what I want to do!! And he done just that for many years!! Merle was the Okie from Muskogee. Red Headed Stranger is Willie Nelson. It ain't so red anymore. It was a dirty red, but you could definitely see it. Age has turned it a redish, brownish & grayish!! lol Waylon Jennings is the one who walks through Jessi's dreams. Jessi Coulter was Waylon's wife. I'm not sure if I got them all, but probably most. Some one will catch it if I did! But I'm nodding off. So hagn!!🙂
The man "outlaw that walks through Jesse's dreams" is referring to Waylon Jennings, he was married to Jessi Colter for about 33 yrs. She also sang on the Outlaws album.
You should watch the official video. The tour bus rolls into a roadside gas station. George meets a very interesting fan with quite a collection of autographs. It's cosmic. It's from 1984.
Jessie Colter... the man who walks through her dreams is Waylon Jenning... as far as who is going to fill their shoes... it became George Strait, Allan Jackson, Travis Tritt, Randy Travis, etc. Today it's a little harder. Nashville has done it's damndest to turn country into bubblegum pop/rock/country. I think the pendulum is starting to swing a bit. Midland, Luke Combs, Cody Johnson etc Re coming forward. They don't necessarily sound the same but definitely are preserving the country sound and feel
I personally felt he was asking who was going to step up next to grow the art. Everyone he referenced added to what came before, so who can build on what they did?
2:21 hello darling was Conway Twitty Man in black also Johnny Cash, Red headed stranger Willie Nelson, the outlaw who walks through Jessie’s dreams Jessie Coulter was married to Waylon Jennings he is who walks through her dreams.
When he said Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie. I always thought he was talking about Charlie Pride. Not a country guy... but I always heard these kinda songs from my mom. Specially Elvis, Conway, Hank, Buck and Charlie Pride.
In the late 70’s/Early 80’s Pop Country was taking over. In the mid 80’s this song helped to usher in a more traditional sound. Unfortunately today this song makes even more sense as what mainstream country is today has very little to do with what country music was even 15-20 years ago. I’m not saying there isn’t traditional style country being made today because there is by may Artists. But those artists don’t get played on country radio stations or win awards in country music because according to those who run things they are “too country”. I’m going to list a few artists who are still making traditional country music today for those having a hard time finding them. Charley Crockett Jason Boland & The Stragglers Corb Lund Tyler Childers Whitey Morgan & The 78’s Turnpike Troubadours Pokey LaFarge Hellbound Glory There are more but this is a good start.
Thanks for this. I grew up saturated in country music in the 80’s and 90’s. By early 2000’s I gradually stopped listening to country radio because I didn’t feel connected to it anymore. I’ve missed hearing new music since then. I’ll check these out.
FYI, "silver eagle rolling through the night" refers to a popular and iconic brand of tour bus. It is also referenced in Alan Jackson's "Midnight in Montgomery". If you haven't watched it, you should and although you appear to prefer live versions, the official video of this one is best.
I know that you like live performances, but for quite a few, the official videos are the best. In this one, George enters a gas station where the owner has a room dedicated to the best country stars that used to pass in front of his general store/gas station.
