In respect to sparkling wine, it needs to be said that, when at the same price point, cava tends to slaughter prosecco. You can really tell that the former has undergone aging in the bottle whereas the latter has about one measly month of aging in open steel vats. Even up here in Canada where alcohol is overpriced due to being sold by a government monopoly, you can still manage to get great value in cava. Just this summer, I found this gem of a cava, 2015 vintage, at 22 $. The empyreumatic notes it boasted were properly astounding.
Cava is tragically underrated, had some really lees-ey and wonderful stuff in Barca that I just can’t find here but even regular cava is DEALS here in the states. Cheers from Seattle
A lot of what goes wrong with wine drinking and wine business around the world is due to the unfortunate result of french classic marketing history. Everybody gets the impression that drinking wine is too much work, and nobody wants to be an ignorant at the table. So i love when videos show people that it's just fun, and it's not all french fancy stuff. I always tell people to stay in step one: Fruity or rough? Tannin or soft? vineyard made, or "factory to grocery store" large products? When people get that, they get enough to know: a) if it may be interesting and b) what they prefer. That's it. My largest comment so far on youtube. I love you and your book! Cheers!
Totally agree. I am always telling people that the only thing that matters in wine tasting is what they enjoy, and to NEVER let a wine professional tell them that they just haven't "understood the wine". That kind of pretentious attitude is what turns people off wine.
Its not about fancy french stuff. It's about understanding why its worth spending $50 over $25, and what you're getting for it. Champagne weather is a lot more finicky than Spain. Attaining perfect ripeness on the varietals, and Pinot is an expensive grape to grow to begin with. On top of that, very few champagne producers actually age their wine for 15 months, most spend 2-4 years in cellars. That's where the price difference kicks in.
Nice & fun video! I live in Penedes Wine Region, near to best cava makers, and I love cava! Here you drink it before lunch, after lunch :) There are many eco-wineries (which follows traditional methods) with cava masterclass! What I want to say is that, first: you can drink sparkling wine cheaper, second: so you get use to consume it in any occasion, third: you should come here to live it! I can give even more details for a sparkling experience!
Years ago I rented a car in Barcelona and drove around the surrounding area stopping at every vineyard I could. It was a very enjoyable few days and I tried some very interesting wines. When I returned to the United States I had to ship several cases, as well as paying to take a few with me as extra luggage. Most of them made it back just fine and for the next few months I just drained those cases, which included several Cava. The prices were awesome and the quality was just 'over the roof'. Since then I've definitely had a thing for Cava...and Catalunya. Except for a few incredible things I wasn't a huge Barcelona fan, but I was in love with Catalunya. Champagne will always be Champagne, and I love it dearly, but Cava has always been my 'go to' sparkler. Lately there have been a huge variety of diverse and incredible sparklers, from all over the place. We are truly living in the 'Golden Age' of beverages!
One of my favorite things about champagne is that cheesy flavor that I haven’t really found anywhere else. I was on a budget for NYE this year and got the Argyle instead of my favorite Louis Roderer reserve, and although it was good, it was missing something for me that I hadn’t been able to put my finger on it until I saw this video. Love it!
I work in wine in France (Languedoc-Roussillon) I recommend Champagne Ruinart or Louis Roederer. In the Languedoc-Roussillon we also make sparkling wines! Crémant de Limoux Kisses from France
I bought campo viejo brut. Its my 1st brut and 1st Spanish white wine. Do you think I’d like it? I heard after getting it that its “dry” and im worried now that i wont enjoy it since im more a fan of moscato and S. Blanc
I love CAVA BUT only the cheapest one that I can find!!! It’s called Campo Viejo Brut Rose. I think it’s only like $8 a bottle before discounts! Other more expensive ones I didn’t see what was better! Cava’s have that little bitter note to them. I’m chilling a bottle now!
It's actually pretty tasty, it's a great starting spot for Cava - I would encourage you to try a Reserva Cava - from a single vintage to step out of the comfort zone. you can find them for around $16-$25 these days :) Good luck!
Cool video! Instructive and entertaining. The camera loves you, you know. I'm from Barcelona, where cava is indeed a big thing. Last summer I visited the Alta Alella winery, where they make the cava you're showing here. It's a hilly terrain, but very close to the sea. I don't remember trying the cava, though it's likely we did. I do remember their Pansa Blanca (A.K.A. xarel·lo - pronounced "shar-AIR-loo") white wines the region is most famous for and some Monastrell reds. Alella is, I think, the only region in Catalonia where Monastrell grapes are still called Mataró. Keep up the good work!
Madeline, thanks for the video! I love learning about wine in a fun way, your way. BTW, the (dark red/burgundy?) color of your top suits you very nice, good choice!
Currently on Temporary active duty for 5 months living in a hotel. So getting to good wine is kinda hard. Can't wait to get back to my normal living situation to get back to my wine game.

I've read plenty of articles, but since you're an expert, I defer to your thoughts and experience. I love Cava from Spain btw. I love dry sparkling wines better, but I enjoy Prosecco as well. Anyway, great channel!
what do I think? well it's hard to compare cars and pasta as it is champagne to cava.... and btw you mentioned Prosecco but only featured the oragon sparkling wine..... so I don't know / they are very different and fun to taste them side by side for sure... between the level of bubbles, clean dry aspects it's all very hard to say and thusly why when asked what is. my favorite wine, I would say the next one :)
I'm watching this video enjoying a brazilian wine made in the tradicional method (Chardonay and Pinot Noiiiir 😂). Broke my heart seeing you spit the champagne in the mug, if you know the prices in third world haha...
Hay just thought I'd say thanks for all your amazing work! A new wine Folly vid always lightens up my day. Just a thought, may be at some point you could do a comparison with some Tasmanian sparkling?
The Prosecco grapes used to make the wine were grown in Oregon, and a traditionale methode was used. The geographical location of the wines production would have no impact on the taste or quality of the wine so why are you asking?
@@paulk2560 "The geographical location of the wines production would have no impact on the taste or quality of the wine so why are you asking?" Really? Hey Madeleine, lovely video. I'm a wine enthusiast but I live in India, which has a very limited imported wine selection (local ones are very good, mind you) which costs a fortune (a 10$ wine will sell at 25$ here because gOvErNmEnT, which also happens to be a substantial chunk of my wage to spend on a bottle). Now my question is, is there any way you could suggest me to get as much exposure to wine as possible being as frugal as possible?
Shreeraj Salunke You guys are in the nascent stage of a massively growing wine industry and buying market. I wonder how much Australia is bringing in? There is some good juice from there. This is a really tricky question to answer. I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of what you see isn’t that great.
I've kind of stopped drinking Prosecco and other Charmat method sparkling wine, as I feel for just a few dollars/euros more you can get a nice Cremant (Reserve) or Cava (Reserva). I also really enjoy MCC from South Africa and Trentino DOC espumante, but those are rare in Asia. Glad to hear that Madeline is from Oregon, I have a lot of respect for Oregon winemakers. They seem to be much more terroir respectful and trying to make wines that reflect their soils and environments. Ditto for Washington and the Finger Lakes. I think American wines get a bad reputation due to a fair few California wine makers making overly alcoholic, over extracted and oaky wines. There seems to be a movement in Cali away from that, but it's gaining pace rather slowly, it seems
Sparkling wine is so confusing to me. Thanks for the video. Wife and I found Treveri Cellars out of Yakima produces several unique sparkling wines. There are all kinds of great, reasonably priced sparkling wines being made around the world now. France makes some lovely Crémant wines from Burgundy and a host of other regions that can drink like Champagne for a fraction of the cost. California also makes some lovely bubblies in the cooler regions like Anderson Valley & Carneros.
No, didn't know that Oregon was your home state. The red, white and sparkling wines of the "Beaver State" have been a continual source of delight for me over the last year. And I'm finding that, for the most part, NV French Champagnes have a sour component to them, especially in the finish, that I find unpleasant. Maybe if I could afford $200 a bottle, it would be different. Cheers.
