Versus Series: Valenthyne Farfalla vs. Darth Nihl

  • ...I know. It's a weird one. This was a challenge to myself to see if I could make something compelling out of two figures I felt could have been improved upon as characters, but whose skill-sets were well established. And as Farfalla is basically Mr. Tumnus cosplaying as a Jedi, I'll consider this video a success if I managed to get you to take him seriously. So let's give it a go...

      They flat-out need an anthology series. Starting with the dark Jedi leaving the order (Ajunta Pall and crew), then moving on to Exar Kun's reign, then Revan and Malak, then the Sith Triumvirate, then Malgus, then Bane and Zannah, then Tenebrous and Plagueis, then Lumaiya and Caedus, then Abeloth, then Krayt. That'd be so cool

      +GreyJedi91 Good to see you back. While it may be a warmup, it was a well used one. This is actually the first versus upload from you that I have seen in realtime rather than it being a old one. Your great reputation precedes you and I can't wait to see more if I'm able. This versus made me think of fight between Rahm Kota vs Kopecz, but the most recent of uploads by you and Connor clearly show that my suggestions have some work to be had. Good day.

    I just finished re-reading the Bane Trilogy and have gained a new respect for Valenthyne Farfalla. One issue I have with this versus match and many others is the massive difference in the style of the source material. If we look at the 2 comicbook series that were used as the sources they are vastly different in styles and themes. The Jedi vs Sith series is a little off the wall and goofy hence Valenthyne Farfalla is portrayed more like a wacky cartoon character where as the Legacy series is dark and more mature hence Darth Nihl is portrayed like a menacing monster. It is like neither character could exist in each others worlds. Obviously the menacing monster would defeat the wacky cartoon character. But this is a universal issue with these types of video. Then again Greyjedi your stuff is top notch and I hope you have more time to produce more.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  9 лет назад +8

      +Darth Armis I agree it's odd. But that was part of the challenge this time. Could I get you to take Farfalla seriously? If the answer is yes, then I succeeded. If the answer is no...well then this was probably a mild waste of time. But I concede the difference between the source material is pretty extreme...at least in terms of the tone and art style. For me, that is even true of the difference between the comics and the actual Bane Trilogy itself which I obviously prefer to the earlier comic story. For me, the Bane Trilogy's account of Farfalla is the more definitive version, and doesn't clash as heavily with Legacy. But there are very few images of Farfalla outside the original comics which is why I used them extensively.
      "The Jedi vs Sith series is a little off the wall and goofy hence Valenthyne Farfalla is portrayed more like a wacky cartoon character where as the Legacy series is dark and more mature hence Darth Nihl is portrayed like a menacing monster."
      To be honest, I totally agree and that is one of my problems with SW in general. A LOT of material clashes...and not just in terms of ret-cons, but rather as you noted because they feel inorganic and disconnected and as though they do not belong in the same setting.

    not totally sure i'd agree with ur verdict, but it was very well reasoned and i won't argue it, all i will say is there was just as much chance Farfarla could of ended the fight rather quickly with his superior dueling skills, but these vids do take all abilities into account so fair enough

      +GreyJedi91 can i ask you two questions? do you ever keep count of which star wars character has the most wins in your VS videos? and would you ever be willing to collaborate with Antoine bandelee,Reti4,Jensaarai1 and Evan Nova in a star wars character vs Tournament?

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  9 лет назад +2

      +Space Invader I don't really consciously keep track of wins/losses, but I do take notice of characters who tend to win/lose frequently. But as of now my focus is on exploring characters I feel are either not afforded the respect they deserve or else are rather obscure. I have a lot of matches that I will produce independently, but I also have a few collaborations in mind with the others. Whether they'd want to do something as ambitious and time consuming as a tournament is something I have not discussed with them.

    • @SuperRenegadeOutlaw
      @SuperRenegadeOutlaw 9 лет назад +1

      +GreyJedi91 that be something interesting to see. you would have to go through a phase of two brackets a jedi side and a sith side and the ultimate winner gets to face the other in a single match up or just get the most balanced characters and do a mix bracket with them all and the eventual winner gets to be Lord king of the friggin moon. this of course is merely a humble suggestion from yours truly have a happy Tuesday GreyMan!.

    Grand Master Yoda..er, I meanness greyjedi91 it is a glorious day to see you return. I'll be honest you are someone to be admired, as this video must of really taken the definition of painstaking research. When I saw this video I didn't think it was a fair fight as I thought Farfalla was way out of Nihl's league due to his battles in the fields. This video showed me that I had overestimated him and I very greatly underestimated Nihl. This video was as sweet as a great dessert. It truly was a joy to see a video from you again Greyjedi91. Your patience and intelligence are unrivaled and you may as well be the Steven Hawking of Star Wars. George Lucas himself would give you an award. • @MorroWolf

    still feel like you guys underestimate the virtue of a staff weapon and surprise in combat. I also dont think its fair to discount someones abilities when they run across the main character of a story line and lose to them, because everyone looses to them. I dont think fighters like Nihil and Maul get enough credit when it comes to fighting in these duels, the ability to change pace in a fight keeping your opponent unsure of what will come next is a great advantage. These are the kinds of situations in which great warriors akin to vader and malgus would loose a battle to someone who may seem less skilled at a glance(dont think vader would lose to anyone really he's just too over powered, though he sorta got beat by boba fett sorta...).

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  8 лет назад +3

      A lightpike is not the exact same thing as real-world staff weapons, but even if it were, it is the in-universe fact (that is to say the professional opinion of a character actually versed in the art and living within the star wars mythos) that the light pike and saberstaff utilize the same combat principles. Therefore the same advantages (which were noted...I didn't say the weapon sucked) and the same disadvantages. Skarch Vaunk, Battle Master during the post-Battle of Ruusan Jedi Order says so in "The Jedi Path." You say I underestimate it. But you don't say how. So I'm not really sure what you're objection is, but I do feel the need to defend the point since I feel I did mention the weapon's good qualities.
      As to your point about not being able to count feats because they lost to a main character...I don't even know how to address that. I'll just say I strongly disagree with that point and leave it at that.

    • @monoclesquid9667
      @monoclesquid9667 7 лет назад

      I also agree. Not to mention, leverage and reach are MASSIVE advantages to have in a blade-based battle. Just ask any HEMA enthusiast. Yes, it is a large target, but users of such weapons likely have styles which compensate for this weakness, much like how vader changed his style to compensate for the weaknesses of his suit. Not to mention, precautions CAN be taken to make a strike to the hilt less viable (cortosis, beskar, etc)

      Ferus had been Anakin's arch rival during their Padawan years. A year after the duel on Mustafar, Obi-Wan considered Ferus' Force connection to be second to that of Anakin. You can find further analysis in this respect thread: www.comicvine.com/profile/fated_xtasy/blog/ferus-olin-respect-thread/104236/
      Depa had developed more blade work than Mace on Vaapad, and she was especially more "elegant." Need I add "brutally efficient?" She's said to be Mace's peer. Any further info can be found here: www.comicvine.com/profile/fated_xtasy/blog/depa-billaba-respect-thread/101204/ The upcoming issues of the _Kanan_ comics would show how she'd managed to get out of her coma, maybe shed light on more of her abilities.
      As for Vestara, some of my colleagues say she'd be no match for the likes of Asajj Ventress and S.O.D. Darth Maul. Maybe not even Vader. Care to test that theory sometime?

      I don't think these two would really have all that much in common to talk about, they have very different personalities after all. Valenthyne at his core is a very social person. He's charismatic, diplomatically savvy and politically astute. Truthfully I think had more Jedi in Kuro's time been as personable as Farfalla Palpatine would have had a far harder time turning public opinion against the Jedi Order.

      Naw, in fact, the original Jedi (the Jedaii 'jed-a-yee') not only had relations. But they often had sons and daughters who were immensely powerful in the Force. Such as the Qel-Droma brothers or Vima Sunrider (who's mom was the grandmaster of the Jedi at the time) the whole no sex and no marriage thing came about when a jedi named Odan-Urr became the new grandmaster of the jedi. He thought that a true Jedi should have a general love for all beings and that traditional displays of affection led to attachment and greed ( case and point Anakin) It wasn't until Luke Skywalkers jedi order that marriage and sex was reintroduced to the Jedi. Luke himself had a wife and son.

    Personally, I find Farfalla to be quite underrated. I haven't read the Jedi vs. Sith comics, but I really liked him in the Darth Bane books. I don't know what I saw that made me like him, probably because he was an over the top version of Dooku which I found amusing.P. S. Are you going to make regular (or at least semi-regular) appearances on the Forcecast now?

      I'm in the same boat. Farfalla to me is a type of Jedi I feel the order needed more of. Social, charismatic, diplomatically savvy and politically astute. If more Jedi had been like him Palpatine would have had a far harder time turning public opinion against the Jedi Order.
      And to top those points off he's still unquestionably loyal to the Jedi, he's a brave man, a good and effective commander and a compassionate person. I feel a lot of the people that don't like him focus on his personality quirks rather than the true core of who he is as a person.

    Sorry, but I have to disagree, I personally think that Raskta told him to back off because she felt that she would fight better without having to think of how Farfalla would affect the duel. I'd say he IS proficient at Tutaminis or Force Shields, but Banes' lightning was so strong he ripped through whatever protection Farfalla had. Remember Bane almost died when his lightning was re-directed. He was one of the leading Jedi Lords so his skill should be nothing to scoff at. He also has more training as a Jedi than Nihl. Nihl didn't start as a Jedi, whereas Farfalla did.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  7 лет назад +1

      1) She did do that. What's the point of mine you're trying to refute here? So far I'm not seeing how your view of Farfalla's skills and how they compare to Raskta's differ from my own. By Fafalla's own admission she was easily the greater warrior of the two and it was only after she fought Bane on her own that she began to make any real progress.
      2) It's totally possible but not proven. I know he can erect a Force shield...but how strong is it? Was he expecting to be able to redirect Ban'es lighting and simply failed because Bane was too strong? Or was it a desperate move that would have failed regardless. I don't know that he can redirect or absorb lightning like Yoda. I Don't know that he can deflect or contain it using a Force Field like Wyyrlok or Worror. Every Force Wielder in the Bane novels can produce a Force shield. Without actually witnessing it deflect or contain lightning, we cannot be certain of the potency of the ability. All we have from Fafalla is a failed attempt. that's not enough for me to place any bets on in his favor, though I admit because of the circumstances he was faced with, it is possible that he has such skill. I actually made note in the video that if Farfalla's skill with Tutaminis was confirmed, I WOULD have awarded him the victory. Sadly all we can truly do is speculate.
      3) This point is not relevant. One doesn't need to have trained as a Jedi first to be/become better, more skilled, more powerful, etc.

    I agree completely with your initially misgivings for Valenthyne characterization and design as well as his ship. That was fucking horrendous, as was most of the art in the Jedi vs. Sith comic. Nihl I feel may have had more of a role if the Legacy series had went on a bit long, but Dark Horse canceled it and Knight of the Old Republic when they both hit issue fifty. It did seem they were building him up for something.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  9 лет назад

      +Psychonis Yeah...the artwork definitely wasn't what I would have chosen for that story. That said, there is some good technique in the coloring/inking. The expression of the characters and dramatic lighting are more effective than I would have thought considering the cartoonish style and comparative lesser amount of detail. As it's the only visual reference for a great deal of the events that also take place in POD, some of the art has even grown on my over the years. That said, certain things just can't be helped or framed in a more positive light...Farfalla's ship would be one of them. With respect to Legacy, I lost interest after they went with Legacy Volume 2 or whatever it was called to be honest. While the ending of Legacy War felt like an appropriate conclusion to Cade's story/era, I still would have liked to have seen Nihl and Wyyrlok's daughter Saarai continue on. Maladi too, though really only because she had an interesting connection with Nihl.

    So I have a stupid question. If a Lightsaber can block Force Lightning and Darth Nihl's Lightning wasn't better than "average".
    Why can't Farfalla just defend against the lightning with his Lightsaber until he can win the day? I don't think that someone who's lead many campaigns against Sith and won did not have at least that option for dealing with Lightning.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  9 лет назад

      +Redpoppy This is indeed possible. The reason why I ruled in favor of Nihl was because Farfalla has never been observed using that tactic. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen though.

    • @sonic8005
      @sonic8005 9 лет назад

      +Redpoppy I don't think it's an easy thing to do with Force Lightning, to just use the saber to deflect it, I think it takes some technique for that.However, you do have a good point in that, if it's during such a major conflict that he took part in, it'd be worth at least considering him capable of doing so. Considering how commonplace it may have been. However it might've been just in regular lightsaber combat. We don't actually get to see much of the actual fighting sadly

    • @Redpoppy80
      @Redpoppy80 9 лет назад

      +sonic8005 I don't think it is "easy" to block Force Lightning regardless of how one would go about it. If you talk about a Jedi from the Clone Wars for example you have to assume that they can't defend themselves against lightning unless you see them actually do it or they are a noted master of Tutaminis because it was such a rare power that Jedi just didn't see a lot at that time. All I am saying is I don't think it is to far of a stretch to think that a Sith slayer did not have effective answers to the common tactics employed by the very enemies that he/she optimized them-self to defeat and survived for years when the standard is "win" or "die". I don't disagree with GrayJedi's verdict at all I am just addressing what I think is mild low balling of Jedi's capabilities in combat because Jedi are not as expressive or aggressive as Sith.

    I say again, you people underestimate the spear. I can't blame you though, star wars in particular and popular culture in general have given the spear a raw deal. There is a reason the spear gets called the king of weapons in the Chinese arts.
    A lot of sword techniques are built to overcome the natural advantages of the spear over the sword. If his opponents aren't trained to deal with the spear then Nial has a huge advantage over his opponents.
    Nial 's fighting form is probably bases off of one or more a standard forms of spear(or more likely glaive) technique that he learned in his rise to a warlord and then adapted to deal with the properties of a light saber. And they would have such skills and he would more than likely have learned them; pretty much every culture in the history of the world has spear techniques. In universe any species that has two hands and conflict would have well developed and probably very ancient spear arts; even gungans...even ewoks.
    And no, mikashi is not perfectly suited to dealing with a spear. Put simply when going against a spear you need to grab hold of it and get in close. Mikashi is a form of distance, of leveraging the reach advantage provided with single handed dueling, however it doesn't have that against the pike Furthermore the loss of the leverage means having no ability to guard against the leverage. Niman is better because you use the force to negate his reach, attaru because it has the CQC and grappling techniques you need to bind his weapon and because of the speed and versatility to close to distance, Juya is better because it gives you the ferocity to close hard and fast. The only thing worse than Mikashi in this match up would be soresu, because even an absolute defense would eventually fall to the pikes advantage in terms of reach, leverage and speed (yeah, its faster to strike with, kind of counter intuitive I know) unless you close to distance.
    The spear is easy to learn but hard to master. The hard part is learning what to do when your sword welding opponent does the only thing he can do and try to get in close and trap and bind your weapon. You do got options though, not least choking up to the point with one hand and using it to wrestle, bludgeon and stab your opponent whilst you get your distance back.
    The two biggest disadvantages the pike with have over the saber is the fact that it is cumbersome to have around when you aren't using it or in close spaces (that is why swords got used as side arms and people carried spears into battle rather than the other way around) and the fact that its going to be harder to deflect blaster fire. That's probably for the best as standing around batting blaster fire isn't something you should be doing for the fun of it.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  9 лет назад +1

      +Anony Mash "And no, mikashi is not perfectly suited to dealing with a spear." I did not say that it was. It is suited to dealing with Nihl based on his performance which I judge to be somewhat spastic and improvisational (which is also debatable). I did not equate Makashi as being the answer to an opponent with a spear. I understand why you're bringing real-world logistics into this, but the fact of the matter is things are different in star wars for a variety of reasons. The characters can move and react in ways that we cannot for one thing. Also, Nihl's weapon is not technically the same as a spear/pike. It has similarities to it though, and the in universe account in the Jedi Path assigns the light pike weapon with the same properties/combat methods as the saberstaff...whether you think that makes sense or not. Close quarters combat is what this would come down to because I believe a nimble Makashi master like Farfalla would be able to close that distance and become the proactive aggressor rather than the regressive defender. This necessitates consideration of the very disadvantages you made note of. Farfalla has experience against common forms of attack like blaster fire and other lightsaber wielders, but also opponents who did carry archaic spears as well as archers. All of those took place in the battles of Ruusan. I'm not saying you're totally incorrect, and I do acknowledge your regard for the spear as it relates to the real world martial arts and the history of warfare. It doesn't have as much bearing in the context of a SW versus discussion in my view.

    • @antonymash9586
      @antonymash9586 9 лет назад

      +GreyJedi91 I am not saying he wouldn't be able to deal with Nail weapon. Classically the mark of a skilled swordsman is the ability to overcome a spears reach, the mark of a skilled speersman was the ability to deal with a shorter weapon that gets too up close and personal. As is said the spear is an easy weapon to use and hard to master. Though I do thing the light pike is more similar to the glave or naginata than a true spear and none I have seen depicted mach the length of the real pike.
      You say they can move differently from real life, well they can and they can't. Yes all that jumping about and precognition is a thing but unless they can dislocate their arms, have flexible bones (and some species can) or they practice the kind of telekinetic lightsaber form we see from Treya then they have to deal with bio-mechanical limitations as well as other factors.
      For a few instances:
      If you can reach out and hit your opponent where he stands (time of the hand) as opposed to stepping in to distance and hitting him (time of the foot) then that is going to be a faster blow. Even if you are faster that rule still applies unless you are built with very strong legs comparable to your arms.
      It is harder for you with a sword to strike out at an opponents legs because your arm is attached at your shoulders. To do so you have to angle you sword and arm, thus reducing your reach and exposing your head and torso to a counter blow. Certain species are exempt from this in SW.
      The strong and the weak of the blade. You get more leverage with the part of your blade closest to your hand (the strong or forte) and less with the tip (the weak or foible). You want to block the opponents weak with your strong. The only way around this would be to use the force to grab the business end of the blade so the rules of leverage no longer apply.
      One of the basic principles of combat is it all hinges on the assumption that your opponent wants to live, your defenses work by threatening him. The thrust stop where you stick out your blade and he would have to impale himself on it to get to you. Its nearly impossible to defend youself against a scuicide attack. It kind of still works but with sudden death weapons like lightsabes its different. Real combat is not like in the movies and whilst sword wounds where often fatal they where rarely instant kills with double kills being common (incidentally that is why pistols overtook swords as the weapon of choice for duelists).

    • @antonymash9586
      @antonymash9586 9 лет назад +1

      +GreyJedi91 To illustrate my point I will give some of the exceptions and why and how that makes them oh so dangerous.
      General Grevious.
      Lets start with general Grevious. Forget the strength, speed and the ability to spin his hands like a top. There are other things that dramatically alter how he fights and how you fight him.
      For a start he has two thumbs per hand. A lot of disarm techniques revolve around the "gate of the hand", revolving the blade away from the line to exploit a weakness in the human hand. With two thumbs Grevious has no such weakness; once he has got a hold on something you are not getting it out of his grip.
      The second thing is his ability to stand on the walls or ceiling. This mean he has something in his feet that can grip onto a surface hard enough to support his body weight. That means he will have a great footing and an breakable stance. You aren't going to throw him about and you really can't unbalance him. Think the Michal Jackson gravity lean and you are there. Since maintaining your balance and stance and breaking your opponents is an essential part of many martial arts his advantage in this regard is considerable.
      Finally is his ability to twirl his hands. The fact alone that he can do that means that his wrist and shoulders are constructed completely differently to you or me. He can generate power and move in ways we can't. For example when you are in a bind if you straighten your wrists to the axis of force (Ie use the edge of the blade rather than the flat as that's aligned with your wrists) you generate more force; that doesn't necessarily apply to Grevious.
      Vodo Sias Bask
      He has tentacles rather than arms or legs.
      Since he has four tentacular legs you can forget about conventional footwork. Balance, footing and stance will all be strengthened. He will be able to move in ways you can't. Sam with his arms, you won't twist them. He will have limitations but not in the same way as a human.
      Darth Treya:
      He telekinetic ability means you can take the rules of biomechanis, balance, stance, leverage and distance and just throw them away. She is limited only by he ability to control her telekinesis; and the need to defend herself and take apart her opponents defenses.
      Durge
      This guy is basicaly a shoggoth, a biological T-1000 that wears humaniod form by choice. Everything that I have said about Grevious and Bask can apply to him. Further more as an extreme regenerator and his extreme resiliance means he can go all out on attack.
      The tactics of combat, the you try to do that and I will take out your "X" doesn't apply to him. He is a completly inhuman opponent and as a result deadly under all circumstances.

    I really do not think Darth Nihl would be able to overtake him at all. This guy lived during the bloodiest time in Jedi & Sith history, which produced some of the greatest lightsaber duelists in the history of the order, like Raskta Lsu & Lord Hoth. Behind only the Jedi of the prequel/clone wars era, and the time of the original Sith Lords. And then Darth Bane on the other end, the Sith’ari; even though he was with Raskta Lsu and multiple other Jedi, he was still able to stand against Darth Bane - even if it was a short time and with obvious difficulty - Farfalla would overwhelm him if they met blade to blade, I think in that regard just the opposite would happen of what you said. I just do not see Darth Nihl ever being able to beat him one on one.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91  5 лет назад

      As much of a Bane era fan as I am I think you're overestimating those characters at the expense of others. Having said that I did give Farfalla the edge as a duelist. It is only in the Force abilities where I see him coming up short. Unfortunately, Nihl has a strong advantage there. Farfall could win. I don't think it's as likely as Nihl taking control via the Force considering the powers at his command.
