Best diagnostic purchases I've ever made, and I'm a shadetree wrencher from way back.... An inexpensive OBD2 code reader, a multimeter and a 1000 watt old school battery tester. With these tools you can pretty much diagnose anything if you know much about the modern vehicle.
Had a car with a check engine light on for a few years but ran just fine, of course I still maintained the vital things like oil brakes and tires. For SMOG checks I would use a scanner and reset the check engine light and it would pass 👌🏽
Probably some sort of intermittent sensor connection, or partially defective sensor, or even issue with ECU. But as long a you can reset it, and it otherwise runs fine, your good to go.
Thank you for the check engine light info! I have a 2012 GMC Acadia and the check engine light would come on for a few days and then go off. Checked for code with OBD scanner and got a bank 2 catalytic convert below threshold code. The car has zero loss of power, I get 325 miles out of 1 tank of gas driving in town and 420 miles per tank driving on freeway. I’ve taken it to multiple shops and they scan it and tell me that the catalytic converter needs replacing @ $900.00 each shop just scans it, not one has road tested it. When I explain that the car has no loss of power and I get very good gas mileage and then ask if the problem could be something else they keep insisting on replacing the catalytic converter. I change the oil every 3,000 miles w/ full synthetic oil and replace the air filter every 6 months. Just recently replaced all O2 sensors and still get the same code. Did the temp test on the catalytic converters and no issues there either.
You're pissing money away on the 3k miles American oil change myth you might as well pay 950 bucks for a new cat. Air filter every 6 months? They're a 2 year service item. You're pissing money away yet won't get the cat sorted to fix your check engine light. you're a weird dude alright.
How do you get around passing smog? I have a smog check coming up with the same issues, codes p042 and p0430. And mechanics claiming cat replacement for $2k-4K. Car runs fine but I need to pass smog 😅
If your headlights burn out, just use a flashlight. If your muffler falls off, just turn the radio up. Temporary workarounds aren't long-term solutions. Don't be lazy or cheap.
Re : Oil burning , pull out all the spark plugs , observe each , the one that is oil fouled , REPLACE that one spark plug with a plug 2 heat ranges hotter . ( also Mark that plug externally AND / or the valve cover by that cylinder . )
Another is the tire pressure monitoring light. The batteries in the sensors wear out after about 10 years and are costly to replace. Just get a tire pressure gauge at the auto store for $5 and measure the pressure if it look low. Also check the spare tire as it can loose pressure over time and trigger the light.
Hell im old and i too have a bunch of check lights, but the wife still keeps me around 😅. She says im still cheaper and more reliable than a new model 😂.
Enjoyed this one-- 1. Facing $50 to replace dual hood gas struts, I decided to use the $50 for a better cause, and found a length of .75x.75-inch dowel to hold the hood aloft. Works well, on even windy days. 2. Adding oil every now and then to maintain a "half quart low" dipstick reading is no issue. Correcting a piston ring blow-by problem is far more expensive. 3. A "check engine light" deserves attention, but if no obvious malfunction presents, and reading for trouble codes reveals nothing important, the light can be ignored, for a while
Scotty is 70 years old but I just watched him changing a tire by hand, on a harbor freight tire changer contraption... if you've never had the pleasure, do yourself a favor and just don't try this, because its like wrestling an alligator without the teeth -

There's no emission inspection in my area; I had a ranger with a check engine light on for "catalytic converter below efficiency" (p0420). Wasn't worth throwing a converter at. 100% correct. Your car will NOT pass inspection in NC if the light is on, no matter what the reason is. They won't even hook it up to the emissions tester first to see if it will pass.

I used to drive a 98 jeep Cherokee (loved that car) that leaked quite a lot of oil. I actually did the calculation of the cost of putting some oil in once a week vs the cost of replacing a seal. I would have to drive it for many years for it to be worth it to fix it so I just topped it off every week. The oil also changed itself over time which was pretty nice. I stopped driving it because the body was getting bad but it still sits in the barn. I love it too much to get rid of it.
Had a check engine light for years on my 20 yr old truck. It was a bad sensor that needed a $100 tool to replace it and it didn't help my truck in any way. She kept on going for years with no issue. I finally just traded it in for a new to me truck.
Old lady’s 07 Jeep Cherokee burned and leaked oil. Had a bad rear main. Daily drove it for 10 years like that before was taking about 5 litres/month of oil towards the end. Engine light? Perhaps, but obviously that can be cleared with a $20 scan tool if you just want to clear it for emissions test. But, airbag light, VSA light, ABS light, DRL light..those don't matter for the test, cause those were all lit up on my dash and the emissions gal so it's no problem.
If you don’t live in the counties surrounding the big city. No more inspections in 2025. God help us. Because if I get in an accident and the person hits me . His car will Be checked out if it should be on the road. As an Auto Tech for 47 years I know how people don’t check their cars. Now it will Be an excuse?
Here in Masachusetts if your car is 15 years or older, the check engine light does not matter because when the car is 15 or more years old, they do not have to do emissions anymore regardless of check engine light or not and only does just the safety as long the car is 15 years or older. My 2008 Carolla(manufactured in 2007) is over 15 years and they only do just the safety and no longer needs to do emissions. As long you keep the car well maintenanced, you won't have problems.
The check engine light being on is an automatic emissions test fail in all of California, too. EVEN IF the pollutants actually measured are WITHIN the legal limits.
@@tedpurvis4573 Sounds like time to rewire the bulb! We used to have inspections here but all you needed to pass was lights, horn, and wipers. Occasionally they would check the emergency brake. Inspections were eventually done way with. (There was no change in traffic accidents.)
My Civic has had the CEL on for a while reportedly due to an issue with an O2 sensor. I have troubleshooted the issue but can't find anything wrong. The idle is a little high sometimes but I still get 35MPG
get yourself a code reader to deal with check engine lights in most cases, like he said it's nothing, but if you want or need to turn off the light or know what it is you can use the reader to do that, which is really helpful if you have to pass emission tests, because they reject you no matter what if the light is on
Good thing we don’t have ck body lights on us we would stay lit all the time ( well some folks do) but you know what I mean. I’ve bought cars that came with hood sticks there may be a aftermarket spot for them. Black electrical tape is the best fix that I have found for ck engine lights but then again my 25 year old Camry runs so smooth that the light is how I know it’s running.
Always take a one day in the year to lightly smear white grease on the rams. This keeps the surface of the rams a greasey film to prevent the o rings from wearing out, which could leak the gas out of the cylinder. Wipe dirt build up and remove the excess build up just before you apply the white grease.

Be checked out if it should be on the road. As an Auto Tech for 47 years I know how people don’t check their cars. Now it will
Be an excuse?
@@edwardkveton3410 Yea. Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso. Check engine will be a fail.
Thank you!
My Civic has had the CEL on for a while reportedly due to an issue with an O2 sensor. I have troubleshooted the issue but can't find anything wrong. The idle is a little high sometimes but I still get 35MPG
get yourself a code reader to deal with check engine lights
in most cases, like he said it's nothing, but if you want or need to turn off the light or know what it is you can use the reader to do that, which is really helpful if you have to pass emission tests, because they reject you no matter what if the light is on
Well said!
My dealer mechanics always warned that a blinking Engine Light is worse than a Solid Engine Light.
True or just dealer nonsense?
That's actually true!!
@@MrRGiller thanks

Always take a one day in the year to lightly smear white grease on the rams. This keeps the surface of the rams a greasey film to prevent the o rings from wearing out, which could leak the gas out of the cylinder. Wipe dirt build up and remove the excess build up just before you apply the white grease.
Big up from England scotty
You’re the best, thank you!
Gotta ask, Scotty - how often does your check engine light come on? 😊
you are the best mechanic
I still keep the check engine light off. I like to know about upcoming events. Our state requires inspections. I like to anticipate the cost.
When that check engine light turns off is when you have to worry 😂
Or flashing
My 1976 Cadillac El Dorado has a ticking sound under the front seat. Should I be concerned?
You should if you live in New Jersey
Thank you, great common sense tips.
I love you, your videos are very much appreciated, may God continue to bless you 💞😇
