- Welcome to Morogoro, Tanzania. Here we're heading up to the Uluguru Mountains to meet the Luguru Tribe. These amazing people harvest a special kind of mud that is prepared and consumed across the country. It's called Udongo, and we trek up to a remote village to try it.

Understanding Mudfossils aka Petrified Flesh will help you understand this.
These ladies are digging down to the clay layer. What Roger Spurr has taught us is that the clay is flesh of bodies that were not exposed to the surface during the petrification event.
What this means is that if you are not embalmed and you died and are buried your flesh turns to clay. That clay will be rich in minerals such as iron.
The iron from the blood even stains the clay red or dark depending on if it was arterial blood vrs. venous blood. If you hit a pail color of clay, then most likely the body was wounded and drained of blood. The clay has a natural smell of decayed flesh.
So it makes perfect sense in a way that these women seek this clay during pregnancy to boost there iron as being pregnant consumes alot of iron. If meat is scarce then this is the natural equivalent of a vitamin.

it has practically no nutritional value (when lab tested) and its bad for the digestive tract, it can however slow the effects of certain toxins and poisons ... but at the cost of your digestive tracts health...they do something similar in Haiti and when things are rough and its the primary source of food, people die.

The red mud is high in Iron, that's why pregnant women eat it. These mud cakes are made on Uluguru and send down the mountain and sold in other cities in Tanzania.

My grandmother was born in Mississippi and grew up in a rural community. She raised my father in Chicago and he recalls her receiving small packages of red earth from her home. She would say she has a "taste for it", break a little off, and eat it slowly. Very compelling and beautiful to see her distant cousins eating the clay, an unbroken link from the American South to Africa.
Indeed … I was born and raised in McComb Mississippi and I remember the adults talk of eating red dirt 🤌🏿
Saw red dirt in Belize

It's called pica, usually a symptom of an iron deficiency.
As a kid we used to play in the woods and found this red clay in Ohio also we eat it naturally I guess it's genetics
I seriously love seeing how ppl who dont speak the same language comunicate. It's always goofy and everyone seems to have so much fun

My dad used to tell me when someone craves for soil, then its a sign they have iron deficiency. I guess its not that they are forcing themselves to eat it. Its more like their body is craving for it.
Doesn’t have to be soil, pica cravings can be non food items in general. Rocks, Bugs, Poop and dry wall in my experience…lol.

My mom said she used to crave soil when she was expecting me.. must be iron deficiency as highlighted in comments, thank you for making this video to educate us about this wonderful culture. Amazing!
Same my mom its something common i guess
It's called pica, mostly happens to pregnant women and small kids
Did she actually looked at earth and wanted to ingest it?
Crave soil? I've never had soil? Did they ever have soil before pregnancy? Interesting
The song they were singing when pounding the clay was beautiful

In Jamaica that fruit is called June plum, and really taste like mango and orange together when ripe.
Oh my!! We have this mud pies in Ghana too but ours is grey-ish, it’s moulded into shapes like that as well and baked in a mud oven, anyone can eat it too but it’s mostly eaten by pregnant women. I believe that every African country/ tribe have something in common!! ❤️❤️❤️
In Nigeria too. I've only heard about it in the Igbo tribe among Nigerians though. Its called Ulo and is grey and tastes salty. It's usually pregnant woman that consume it.

Even in South Africa they are consumed. Even in big cities but now it's quickly dying out.
My mom would of like those mud sticks. She craved soil while pregnant and we are from Puerto Rico.
I'm a South African but I have never seen them
I love how you're not afraid of being immensely involved in their culture. You're a lovely person
It’s pica-eating mud due to iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
Ohhh that makes so much sense. Thanks!
It makes a lot of sense too that they add lemon. Vitamin C helps the absorption of iron
and also consuming clay...from my experience...is really good for you! just not all of the time. I have tried it and omg...I was surprised out how much junk it collected in my system from such a small amount of clay
*STEP 1 PTSD kicks in*
Considering how isolated this tribe is, not experiencing many visitors, it's amazing that they provided such a medically significant solution, that is readily available for them! And who knows how long they have been practicing this 🤔 Genius!
This is funny because my step mom is from Zimbabwe, and when she was pregnant she would eat the soil from ant hills, i was probably 9 years old so I tryed too and for some weird reason i kinda liked it, it was so fine and had a nice earthy taste, taste nothing like mud or regular dirt.

Clays can do a pretty good job at absorbing excitotoxins and stabilising the microbiome of the digestive system. Also pretty good at dealing with high blood sugar and liver issues (same type as you get in pregnancy). Heavy metal contamination is a concern if not properly sourced/tested. Saved many a mother from the morning rickets. Cellulose is a good alternative, especially seaweeds/kelp, minus the iron, vinger cold kelp salad mixed with iron reinforced sesame is a good east/west alternative. when low on grit it's pretty nifty for dental hygiene too

I like to eat the adobe mud... my great grandmother lived in an adobe home the doorway had places where the adobe had broken off and from there I began chipping away and eating everytime I went thru that door she would tell everyone I was literally eating her home 🏡 🙃 😅 good life ❤
In America they call craving foods like this "pica cravings," which can include dirt, mothballs, soap, and cigarette ashes! Pica cravings are most common with kids, but a lot of pregnant women satisfy their cravings by eating ice. They're not sure why people get pica cravings, but they think that yes, it could be an iron or other mineral craving, or in the case of dirt, a craving for the microbiota that live in there that can aid the immune system. Thanks, Mike! Love your videos.
I get pics cravings even when not pregnant lol but not often. When I was a kid though I would crave chalk a lot lol I love the taste of chalk too xD
It’s interesting that something which, I guess would be classified as a disorder or something? Is actually deemed normal and even traditionally encouraged elsewhere, and you can actually explain how it’s legitimately useful
I was also thinking the same about immune boosting the digestive tract. I know Australian aboriginals eat clay for certain ailments and also some certain birds eat clay to remove toxins from the food they eat. Add a kid I also used to get cravings for certain foods and knew what I needed but as I got older I couldn't distinguish the cravings from hunger and noticed sometimes after eating certain things I felt very satisfied as if my body had just got exactly what it needed.

The dirt has minerals that cannot always be found in food and for a pregnant mother that is very important. Also dirt known to bind and remove toxins from the body so this would be optimal so the mother does not pass on any toxins or heavy metals to the child. Study Shilajit, Zeolite and Bentonite clay.
cheers thats pretty cool
zeolite is not even close to being food. all zeolite is extremely high in aluminum and will poison you
@@micahasher7600 You have been misguided. Zeolite is a health supplement and been used for many years for detoxing heavy metals from the body by top doctors. I have used it myself with great success. Sure some forms of it may be less pure than others but that is why you have to do your research and self-educate not blindly pass on things you hear without direct experience and scientific facts.
@@micahasher7600 The chemical name for clinoptilolite zeolite is aluminosilicate. So yes, zeolite does contain aluminum and silica. The key here is that zeolite is a naturally occuring volcanic mineral, so we can't control the ratio of silica to aluminum. If we tried to alter the naturally occuring structure of zeolite the efficacy of the product would go down and we would run into a whole host of other problems. Zeolite is a natural mineral and has a variety of elements in it. It is important to note that the structure of zeolite does not get broken down in the body. Because zeolite does not get broken down in the body, it does not leech any elements that make up the compound. Zeolite is not like an essential mineral that gets absorbed in the body and utilized for cellular functions. Zeolite is not absorbed in your body. It simply passes through your blood stream collecting positively charged toxic elements and then is excreted. Therefore you cannot overdose on zeolite and you cannot poison yourself with zeolite. Nothing in the structure of zeolite is bioavailable.
